Leader of Combine

Alright so we know that Dr. Breen is the leader of the combine, as a result of Dr. Breen manageing earth's surrender. Since he did this the Combine appointed him their leader. But who 'lead' the combine before Dr. Breen? Did they have no leader and are just working together for a common goal, and decided they needed a leader? or is their some higher ups for the combine that appointed Dr. Breen the 'leader.' ?

Obviously there is someone 'higher' than Dr. Breen, becuase when you are chasing him, you see him talking to someone that looks like a big worm. So maybe the 'big worm' appointed him as the leader. But i thought Eli vance said that the combine appointed Dr. Breen their leader for manageing earths surrender in the 7 hours war. when they say combine, i think of the cops/soldiers you fight throughout the game, but maybe its something else. I'm not sure.


maybe the combine are just like gordon freeman, and are there just to get the 'dirty work' done for the 'higher ups' like that big worm.

It all seems to boil down to two sides: one side trying to take over earth (Dr. Breen, combine, big worm) and the other side trying to save earth. (Gordon, G-man, resistance.. etc) Good vs Evil.

Why would a conquering army apoint some guy from a conquered race to be their leader?

He is not the leader of the Combine, he is the administrator of Earth. He commands limited Combine resourses and a human force that agreed to (or forced to) serve the Combine, "The Combine Outwatch"

administrator of the earth? how does he go from administrator of Black Mesa, to administrator of earth?

Also, yah i thought about how stupid it would be to appoint someone from the opposite side as your leader, but apparantly Dr. Breen isn't on 'our side' I'll have to get the exact quote of eli vance..

and the combine outwatch? what is this? are these the 'police' that you meet in the beginning of the game?

Combine outwatch are the human police and soldiers.

He got to be the administrator for Earth by managing Earth's surrender. He got to manage Earth's surrender possibly because he had early contacts with the Combine back in Black Mesa and made somekind of deal.

Breen isnt the leader of the combine...breen is simply a pawn. There are no actual combine on earth, breen has simply been appointed Admin of earth by the combine.

All he is in charge of are the combine overwatch soldiers (hence the name) whom are upgraded with combine tech...

Theyre just using breen

The combine didnt make him there leader, he is simply collaborating with them, the combine just put him in charge of earth.

There are some really interestign things in the script that werent put in the game...

i see what your saying. they rewarded him with power, doesn't mean they appointed him leader. I guess i thought he was a leader, because he seems to have so much authority in the game. He has his own office, he's portrayed in big screens throughout the game. He just has the type of 'aura' if you will, that someone with leadership has.

The big screens is him trying to address us as a species as a whole, to turn humanites opinions in hsi favour....he thinks he is doign whats right for humanity...

But all he is incharge of is really a bugggered planet with drained resources, a low population and some scabby cities..with a collective aline race peerign over his shoulder

Hey all I’m new here but I can help to make something clear, I hope
Dr Breen isn't the leader of the Combine, he is just a puppet for the real leader of the combine.
But who is the leader of the combine you ask yourselves??
Well you have seen him twice in the game, one time in the beginning and one time at the end of the game.

Look at the 2 screens I made below where you can see him or it.

The first thing that I noticed is that it looks very like Nihilanth.

So the combine hase some relations with the border world.
I even think that Nihilanth was the border world administrator for the combine.
And that the combine appeared on earth due to the Resonance Cascade. And took over the earth in 7 hours with help of Dr Breen who convinced the world leaders to surrender to the combine.

Another fact is that the Xen help the rebbels, the xen where Combine slaves on the border world just like the combine police on earth, they where normal humans but they where transformed to combine police.

The combine looks verry like the Borg from Startrek

Point is, Breen reports to that thing, and so Breen most certainly isn't the top guy of the Combine.

And it's OVERWATCH. Not Outwatch.

Its certainly not the leader, its name is afterall "Combine Advisor", i think its there to advise breen and breen hasnt come across the combine heads yet..

My Oppinion is that the Gman is not Good, hes not even human! he takes on a human form to harness the power of Gordon for his well being (or profit). The Gman is just taking the side of the highest bidder..
I hope the Gman dies... :flame:

There are combine on Earth, Mossman when you first see her says something like "Once combine come to Earth, they are stuck here." Or something like that, but, most combine are part of the Overwatch.

It was a Domino effect.. Gordon (us) attack Xen, Combine know about Xen (maybe control it?) They see us as another place to sit there asses down and watch is squirm. (maybe theres more to it but im a little pissed at the Combine for now)

BTW can someone tell me how to Qoute i ferget how i ahvent been on a forum sense i finished HL1

Dr. Breen Refers to, “The Universal Union, that small minds call the combine.”
From this I gather that the combine are Union of many species but obviously the “Combine advisors” and Dr. Breen are getting the better end of the stick then the transhuman overwatch or stalkers.
