Learning to play piano

What are some good books I can buy over Amazon to teach me to play the piano? I'm just looking to play classic piano, not the newage electronicy stuff.

Also, is there a cheap <$200 piano I can buy to practice with? Doesn't matter if it's electric or whatnot, just that it sounds good and has all the appropriate gear to learn with.

get a decent piano action midi keyboard and a vst. learn scales online and play around. get sheets and maybe a teacher. all you need

Well you can check out Pricegrabber and see if you can find yourself a decent piano. I don't think you'll get a quality piano for $200 or less, to be honest... I think with about $300 will do.

I'd recommend getting yourself a Korg/Casio/Yamaha piano.

And about books, your best bet is probably learning with an instructor. I would recommend, for performance:

The Little Pischna
Schmitt
Muszkowski Etudes

And for learning theory and notation:

Pencil and Paper by Walter and Carol Noona (all three books)

I would recommend you to get yourself a GOOD teacher who can respond to your desires and needs with the piano.

What do you think? I can't really go much more expensive than that- especially for something that I'm not 100% sure I'll be excited about in a year.

You can get a good quality hammer action keyboard that is a MIDI controller. This means your computer provides the sounds. It'll save you a lot of money.

I'd really suggest getting an instructor. There's a lot of technique that you have to get down that might be really hard to learn properly without someone to correct you. Form and fingering are especially important with classical music. I also strongly recommend getting yourself a real piano, or at the very least a keyboard with weighted keys (don't know how expensive they are, though.)

My parents started me on a keyboard when I was 6 years old, but ended up having to get me an upright piano within a year. The feel is completely different, and for learning, it's best to have an understanding of the real thing. Good luck!

Haha yeah, actually I was going to learn to play that song first because it's so easy. It's one of the first classical pieces I've ever heard and I absolutely love it. My piano snob friends think it's a bore, but I just love the sound of it.

My mom is going to teach me, actually. She spent most of her childhood with a particularly strict and demanding piano teacher, so I have faith she'll know all the ins and outs.

I'm also looking to do the same, i have some piano training, and i'm looking for a good keyboard to play on as well. Any recommendations on the keyboards would be awesome as well, hopefully in the 200-300 dollar price range.
