Greetings all,

Is the original Left 4 Dead fun & worth getting? Since I really enjoy L4D2, I thought I might try the original L4D.

As of right now, I have about 47hrs of playtime invested in L4D2. I have managed to unlock the first 28 of 50 achievements & have killed a total of 14,775 zombies to date. I have heard & read that L4D2 is much better overall than L4D1 was. Is this true? While we will all have different opinions as to which is better & why, whats the general consensus? Still worth getting & playing?

I have heard a great many different people say online lately, that there were rumors that L4D & L4D2 were going to be combined at a later time & thus playable with all 8 chars covering the locations of both games.

Anyone hear of this? Just a false rumor or possible truth?

Thanks in advance.

Basically, you'll feel like you're playing a dumbed down version of L4D2. I, honestly, find absolutely no point to ever go back to L4D1 except for the easiness of the game alone with the characters. I find them much more friendly and familiar than the new ones.

Anyway, there might be a time where cross-game is going to be enabled, but from what we know is that the next update will introduce a way to play with all of the characters or something of the sort. Like the characters cross paths, but that doesn't mean you'll be playing with them. Either way, I still think you should own the first L4D regardless. It was an amazing game at the time, and now, the second one just blows the first one out of the water.

Most people will say, "this is what the first game should be," but you know what, it wasn't. They didn't have these ideas when they were releasing at the time or they did and they chose to let everyone play this game to see how well it was accepted, then they started the second one and added so much more to it that made it that much more fun. Anyway, buy it.

The first game certainly has a different feel to it, but it's still a l4d game. If you just want more co-op zombie killing, then you can't go wrong with buying it.

There's more depth to L4D2. It simply has more to it and it's a way more enjoyable experience.

L4D2 just covers up poor level design by ****ing you will far too many enemies at once. Although the versus mode is more fun. But for coop L4D is much better.

Thanks for the input all.

I bought the game for $22 on Steam and it's downloading now. It should be done downloading in about 30 mins. IMO, you just can't go wrong when it comes to slaughtering zombies.

I honestly see no point in L4D even existing right now. The gameplay is so bland and boring compared to 2. The overall atmosphere of 1 was better though, but that's it.

I miss some of the maps from L4D1.
Glad to see they're getting ported over :)

I must say, I rather like L4D.

With it's moody & dark atmosphere, the world seems more alive than L4D2's. As in more game world clutter. Such as when you make it to the Hospital for example. It seems like everyone left in a hurry, except for the zombies. While the graphics aren't quite as nice as L4D2, the game itself is quite enjoyable. So far, I have not come across any graphical glitches, which seem to be many a gamers gripe about L4D.

I really like the weapons. The shotguns seem to really pack a punch & take longer to reload/fire/reload which I like. The pistols also seem to fire faster, which is nice. Though I will mention that they seem to pack too much kinetic force upon impact, often blowing enemies a great distance away.

Have only played on Normal thus far, but the enemies seem a little on the weak side & die quite easily. Still with so many coming at you, kinda makes up for that shortcoming. Are there Melee weapons? Have not found any.

Of course, I'm late in coming to L4D & so you all prob have played the game to death & are sick of it. Can you play it without Steam running? Tried to add a couple people to my friends list, but when I went to add them, said they had not been online for hours. Cracked?

yeah, if you like L4D2 then i see no reason not to. the same mechanics are all still there, and to go through some fresh maps with different characters is also great, so i'd say go for it. i'm going to fire it up at some point as i miss... well, i miss all the levels. i loved them everytime, much like i really enjoy the L4D2 maps.

i think it'll basically feel like you're still playing L4D2, though i don't mean that literally as i know there's tons of changes, and i don't mean it in a bad way as i liked the gameplay of the first and i like it just as much in the second - i'm glad the same principles and design is relatively similiar, if just that the second game is the more polished outcome.

I'd get the first one just for the extra maps and the potential of being able to play them in Left 4 Dead 2 down the road (if it happens). That said, if you want endless zombie-killing, you'd be better off with Killing Floor for $10 or whatever it is right now.

I have Killing Floor. It is indeed a great zombie Killing game as well. After I maxed my Healer out to level 5 & got the free map & weapon DLC, I stopped playing, since fun as it was, it got a little too repetitive. Still, it's been a few months since I last played it, so perhaps once I'm done with L4D, I'll go back & play KF some more.

Q: In L4D2, when you're carrying a melee weapon, where do your pistols come from when you are incapped? :|

Don't be stupid, you clearly have to shit the pistol out to use it, that's why you lie on your side slightly.

When coach helps you up he's really putting it back ready for your next incap.

Good post.

All the jerks in steam chat convinced me to get L4D1 for 8 bucks, and you're all saying it's not even worth it. Gah.

I haven't even touched it yet!

Not worth it?

Tell those that tell you that to STFU.

L4D, while not quite as good as L4D2 is, it's still VERY fun.

I personally hated L4D, and had even less fun with L4D2. You could buy L4D and have the same shit all over again or buy something fun like Killing Floor.

Follow the thread, he already got the game and is enjoying it.

I actually enjoyed the first L4D a lot more than 2 simply because I found the actual design of the levels to be more varied and better laid out. I've hardly played 2 since I bought it :(

I'm with you bro. I was so disturbed by how little i wanted to play it that i started a thread. I don't know if it's the other players / the lack of an atmosphere in the whole game / the fact that it's all in the daytime (wtf?!).

I dunno, i liked L4D so much that it's really difficult to not like L4D2, but it hasn't really got what L4D had when it comes to keeping me interested.

Nah,there aren't no melee weapons in left 4 dead 1 at all. Also,i just got my xbox 360 at christmas and i got left 4 dead as one of them so i ain't sick of it.
Wouldn't mind getting left 4 dead 2.

Aren't we getting the L4D maps and characters as a DLC for L4D2 anyway? I read that somewhere.

I was kind of burnt out on L4D1 well before L4D2 came along anyways. It never really had a lot of dynamics to begin with, but the gameplay itself was entertaining. I mean the problem was that you basically could do two things (until survival came out) campaign and versus. Campaign was only good on expert and even then you basically always knew what was going to kill you. Versus was ok, but survivors could win easily by just running through. Survival was a nice little addition but it didn't add a great deal... the idea of never really "winning" kind of put me off.

L4D2 addressed all these issues and added more depth to current gameplay. Don't get me wrong though, I enjoyed L4D, but after all the hours I put in to it, these issues were all that were really left. I figure after a few more months of really playing L4D2 I could find some flaws in it too. Well right now I could tell you the one that bothers me the most is the AI survivors being near retarded. Lagging behind a hundred yards or never shooting a special infected off of another person. It drives me crazy.
