Yeah and we posted that back on the 18th September last year! Nice blog post but with a lot of information and development talk on things we've already seen. Understandably people are looking towards bug fixes and new content now. Valve are always fairly coy about these things, I see this as a little 'hang on a second' update, as they put together the update which was scheduled for New Year.
 
I love how much thought is behind everything.
 
It all goes to show why so many smaller projects fail. It's also why the mod scene is much smaller than that of HL1, with so much more to think about.

Considering how huge the mod scene is with HL2 and its related games, i wouldn't call it much smaller. Take all the other games, Crysis, Cod, FEAR, Fallout 3, and how big is there mod community? Hl2 is actually super close to the amount of customization of HL1, just look on FPSbanana...
 
Things tend to be alot more critical now, there was a time when you could create the most basic concept in a first release, and you would get a great community response, nowadays people expect you to devote most of your life to creating a retail quality product for free, and if you dont, they tear you apart. The other side of it is mod teams that set out to do just that, and flop because of the work involved, resulting in alot of wasted time and talent.

I have noticed things picking up a bit lately though, bringing selected mods to steam has certainly injected alot of players into them, and the fact the source engine continues to be updated without the creative process fundamentaly changing means its becoming easier to work with, at least from where im standing, hopefully it continues that way.

Yes, sure. But after 4 and a bit years, there is a significant decrease in the amount of released mods and the ones that are played regularly through quality over the HL1 era.

The only mod I can think of that will really be remembered so far is Garry's Mod for obvious reasons.

I was a little confused as to what you were saying in the first paragraph. You're saying that a lot of mods for HL2 come out and that number may be similar to the amount of HL1 mods, but the number of great mods for each game is much less in HL2 than Hl1? I would agree with your statement and reasoning. Hl2 has an advanced engine and you have to work much harder to release a mod thats even somewhat good. The detail in the environments, animation, narration. This is all because of how much Valve raises the bar with their games, even for the mod community. With HL1, even for the time, you didn't have to be a veteran mapper to make an acceptable map or mod. Thus so many great mods, for the time, came out. As to whether i'd still play 'they hunger' today and get the same experience from it i did back in 2000, i doubt it.

I definitely wouldn't say Garrys Mod will be the only remembered mod. Theres plenty of great mods, insurgency, dystopia, age of chivalry, and the list goes on. But sure those mods aren't as orginal as a lot of the mods from Hl1, but lets keep in mind the era, Hl1 was 98, we all should agree that the gaming industry started growing exponentially towards the late 90's, there for coming out with something original wasn't as much as a brain-scratcher as now. One thing i love about the good HL2 mods, is a lot of them are practically their own game, they dont have to use hl2 props and story, like insurgency which could easily have been a full scale release from another company, just using the source engine... Same goes for dystopia. Where with hl1, i really always felt like i was just playing a 'mod' no matter how good it was, (CS being the onyl exception) but with HL2, some of the mods feel like an actual full scale title...
