An update from the L4D blog talks about the new system being added to Left 4 Dead to support custom campaigns made with the authoring tools Valve released a few weeks ago. The update will be available on Steam next week. Important additions:
  • Add-Ons - Third party campaigns are designed to be installed using a new Add-On framework. Content authors will be able to package up their new maps, along with new posters, models, and textures, into a single .VPK file
  • Matchmaking - When creating or searching for a lobby, a new option named "Add-on campaign" will let you select from among the add-on campaigns that you have installed. You can then find games or lobbies as well as create a lobby for that campaign. You can invite your friends, too. If they do not have the campaign installed, they will automatically be offered and an option to download it.
The authoring tools are also officially coming out of beta, and for details on packaging your new campaign see the developer wiki. Full blog update here.

I'm sure a lot of people will be happy about this. I'm sure many will find something to piss and moan about.

OMG, this update is too soon. It's totally unlike Valve, and I'm not going to pay 0$ for it.

I'm happy that they now have something to make those L4D2 haters shut up. Valve supports their games - but they also make new ones!

VALVE ARE GOING TO ABANDON L4D AND STOP SUPPORTING IT! BOYCOTT THEM!!

Wait... What, an update for L4D?

This is acctully really cool, I would like to see this added to all valves future multiplayer titles, being able to package all specific map related assets with the map in a pak file similar to early ID engines, is so much cleaner and easier to move/remove.

You know what? I'm tired of Valve being awesome. TIRED OF IT. It's so stupid that they always listen to the community and sometimes post on this site. I mean, why waste our time with telling us how a Left4Dead update is coming along. I DON'T WANT TO KNOW! I want to be left in the dark about everything, take away that stupid update thing that always pops up when I start Steam. IT'S SO ANNOYING.!. Also, I think it'd be a brilliant idea to just take away stupid Steam anyways. IT'S SO STUPID!! Pointless, retarded, waste of time, energy, space and sperm. I say that because the damn pop ups from that always come up when I'm watching porn. Jesus you'd think a bunch of computer whizzes would know when a dude is jackin' his shaft.

I HATE VALVE.

"we're not going to give you any more content, but here - a delivery system for crappy user content"

ZOMG VAVLE HAS ABANDONED HL1! HOO CARS ABOUT L4D ANYWAYS?! HL IS STILL A GRAYTER GAYM! VALV SUKS

/bandwagon

OMFG Valve why not just delete L4D from our HDDs already?!

Lame ****ing move tbfh

This thread is ridiculous.

People are complaining about possible loss of content. No one said Valve was going to stop updating L4D all together.

TimoJay gets it.

So does everyone else.

Tell me, what content have you lost, exactly?

Well you stop looking once you find it.

Yessssss, that's the joke, Mr Joke Ruiner. :arms:

Except it's usually not used as a joke and there was nothing to indicate this was one of the few times it was.

It's hardly ever used as a joke and most people use it in quite serious context.

Tsk, you must all associate with eejits.

Come on now, we've all been waiting the last 6 months for SDK (which is basically a map editor) we dearly desired. And the patches/DLC that they actually gave us are mediocre at best. As for me, I was anticipating some actual content (new camps or weapons what not) they promised as well.

Not to mention that SDK was hinted to be delivered at Christmas, sometime soon in the New Years, finally promised with Survival Pack, and now the next thing we hear is L4D2....

P.S. where's MM2.0

Not when they frickin promised "exciting content" while retail started with 4 campaigns(which still is ffs)....

Also I don't know if Survivor Pack really counts as DLC.... forever_force_panic + timer on campaign maps and of course, 1 new map.

Oh, well, this is interesting - apparently you have elevated yourself to a station wherein you can define what DLC actually is, and set down the terms to which you are entitled to it. Don't "fricken" me with your ridiculous attitude to L4D2 - L4D, shallow though it may be, is a wholesome game, and you purchased it. You are not entitled to DLC, regardless of promises. It is free content. You have no claim over it, nor the right to define it.

Well I apologise that I have rudely elevated myself, but I am just so frustrated by the lack of support Valve has been giving to L4D. There is no doubt that l4d is a great game, but its even greater potentials are being cut short by numerous shortcomings.

And I guess I"m just being depressed. I don't regret spending 50 bucks on this game at all, but when they keeps you excited for the last 6 months only to be disappointed, it's really frustrating.

Custom Campaigns using L4D2 style crescendos might get me playing this game again.

Of course it is, you wouldn't find it and keep pissing looking for it would you?
It is indeed definitely funnier the second time! ;)

I think the L4D mall campaign (3rd party) will be great fun, we should see it fairly soon now.

There's a massive difference between Valve giving out DLC and making community content possible. The connection between the L4D2 ranting is lost on this one...

This is stuff that should have been ready from the word go. All Valve are doing is making it possible for people to play campaigns that other people have put effort and time into.

This isn't DLC. It's the right tools for someone elses job.

Cry some moar!!!

lol'd

It's Valve's game, and it's their call. if they say there's a new game, guess what, there's a new game. Get a girlfriend, dude, you'll forget all about L4D2 pretty quick.

I'll moan (for the jokey sake of moaning) They said all of this would be supported 2 weeks after release! Plus how can you class this as "new content", all Valve have done is made it so instead of them having to make campaigns they can just make the fan base do all the hard work.

Seriously though 'bout time and look forward to playing some different campaigns.

It's perfectly fine for you to not care about this update but there are many that have complained about non-existant user created content the difficulty to get a proper user made game going in L4D. And this release is a perfectly good update to support that part of the community.

source lol OMG !!11

Edit: I'm trying to really "live" the L4D2 whiners. The awful spelling isn't working out so far, though. They really got a talent for it.

I missed this the first time I read. It.

LOL We can call it new content because that is exactly what it is. How can you not class this as new content? Because your mad @ Valve/L4D2 is not a logical answer.

Because your mad @ Valve/L4D2 is not a logical answer.

I’m not mad at Valve, in fact I’m pretty damn excited about L4D2 :)
Granted at first I was a bit like “Wha’? L4D2 already?” but thinking about it, we want new content, most of us (with money) are happy to pay for it so a sequel makes perfect sense.
As for my post, there was meant to be a pinch of irony about what people could moan about, granted if you take the part “for the jokey sake of moaning” out of context I can see it being taken as a serious statement. It’s like what Insano said, I’m trying to understand the mindset of the L4D2 naysayers by imitating one. I’m all for user generated content and with them making it easier it gives people (including myself) incentive to crack on with some content.
I will stand by what I said about it being “about time!” :D
