The release of Valve's cooperative zombie shooter Left 4 Dead has been postponed until November 20, company president Gabe Newell revealed to Gamekings.

"Left 4 Dead is going to be released on the tenth anniversary of Half-Life, our first game," said Newell. "That will be on November 20th, the third week in November."

The oft-delayed title had previously been slated to hit PC and Xbox 360 on November 4. No reason was provided for the brief delay, though the crowded fall season - Gears of War 2 arrives November 7 - is believed to be a factor.

Somewhat smart move, let the dust settle after the release of the bigger titles.

Ah well.

I just watched the video, and I lol'd at Gabe laughing at the sudden sounds of guns and all that, and the fact Gabe had to put the mic inside his shirt.

HL's release date: November 19, 1998
HL2's release date: November 16, 2004
I smell a surprise for 10th anniversary.

I'd worry more about running up against GTA IV which hits PC on the 18th of Nov tbh. Personally they need to delay until the end of the month imho, if they are going after. Allow everyone to let their wallets and play schedules lighten up a bit.

highly doubt gta 4 for the pc will hurt sales....

Correct, that and GTA isn't a competing type of game, Gears of war is, both shooting games, GTA isn't the same type as L4D and Gears.

well the majority of people will already own it for console, so i dont see it as a big pc seller.

What do you mean what a surprise? It's two bloody weeks, why are you people so fickle, it's literally nothing!? Do you sit there all day thinking that without this game you are highly inconvenienced? It's ridiculous, it's the smallest delay ever.

And aside from that, the dates are wrong. L4D will release on November 18th in the U.S. and November 21st in Europe, according to Doug Lombardi.

I Agree. A Christmas release would be even better imo. If i were them,i would hold a competition for a Christmas themed map which then could be included in the game.

I also don't think it's bad at all.

I'm still hoping that they have a beta for anyone who preorders on Steam like TF2... That was great!

Well... Yes.

I hate to state the obvious, but thats an extra two weeks of not playing L4D when I otherwise would have been. It inconveniences me greatly.

I'm sorry, that you feel you need to state the obvious then follow it with a comment which is not only not obvious whatsoever but also completely ridiculous and illogical. You are not inconvenienced you are impatient, there is a mighty difference.

I guess we all better drop our stuff and cater to KennyJC from now on then!

I don't really care that it's been delayed. I have Crysis Warhead, Far Cry 2, GTA IV and CoD 5 to get through in the next few months.

It's nothing to do with the type of game it's more a matter of economics. Novembers a fairly packed month for game releases, with a lot of 'must have' titles hitting the shelves throughout, and ultimately some of those games are going to suffer a lack of initial sales vs others, because the vast majority of players (or their parents) probably aren't going to be in the financial position to buy 3-4 titles in the same month (?120/$240). Contrary to some opinions expressed in this thread GTA IV for the PC is a surefire hit (all of the previous PC versions went straight into the No1 sales slot at release comfortably above the competition). Albeit L4D is a Valve game, to Johnny highstreet that might not really mean that much, when it comes to the pick and choose situation of what to buy and what to wait upon until it hits budget section. That's why it might be judicious of Valve to wait until December.

At the same time, valve seems to be aiming at post release sales as much as the launch date ones, its less true for the xbox version, but one of the PC markets strengths at the moment is that its possible to generate continuing interest in a game, rather than pushing somthing out the door then restarting.

Incidently the official dates are 18th for North America and 21st for Europe, I am assuming that like the Orange Box, the steam date will be worldwide.

They can delay it even more as long as they make the game better in this time.

I assume that too, I'm not sure which date it will fall on being worldwide, the 18th would be the best we're looking for of course :) I'll see if I can get some clarification.

Either way it's a definite Steam purchase for me, the box looked hideous.

I asked Doug about the Steam release...

Hi,

We haven?t set the exact go live time for Steam just yet.

Please stay tuned.

Cheers
Ah well, fingers crossed it'll drop between those dates or before them, then nobody need shed a tear.

Yes because he is now a mod at L4D411. Kudo's to the ban man. Good thing you deleted those nasty PM's you sent me too.

Huh? What? Is this directed at me or DiSTuRbEd?

What's L4D411? I'm a mod? Huh?

Well,

#1, this delay isn't that long
#2, its pushed back to the anniversary of hl1 which is awesome, there should be some kind of half life thing that comes in the box, i dunno what, but something to show it
#3, Most importantly, it stays out of gears of war 2 sales time, which is a competer and would probably out-sell it because of its already known popularity

Just sayin this for the people who are already in the hospital for severe heart-attacks lol
