[br]Left 4 Dead the Co-Operative Zombie-Horror Action-Survival game from Turtle Rock Studios (find the halflife2.net preview here will be coming in the First Half of 2007 to the PC and Winter 2007 for the Xbox 360 according to a new interview on GameSpot with Turtle Rock?s Michael Booth. In the interview several aspects of the game are covered in greater detail than before. Booth talks about the setting of the game, characters involved, playability of the Infected and more![br]The following is a snippet of the interview discussing the setting and the ?Campaign? structure.[br]
GS: What's the setting? Is it contemporary America, in the vein of something like Dead Rising? Or is this a postapocalyptic future we're talking about? What sort of environments will we see?[br]MB: Left 4 Dead is set contemporary America. Although we've pushed the fiction a bit for the sake of gameplay (such as including the "boss infected"), the basic idea of a catastrophic pandemic and the collapse of civilization makes for great survival horror because it is quite plausible. We wanted our environments to remind you of home--but a horribly changed and tortured version of home.[br]The initial four campaigns of Left 4 Dead include both urban areas and rural areas, with lots of dense architecture and challenging landscapes. Each campaign also ends with an elaborate "finale" where the survivors must make a stand while waiting for a rescue vehicle to arrive and take them to apparent safety.
Also now available is the first trailer of Left 4 Dead showing off the Survivors and some basic Infected zombies in all their glory. Get it from GameSpot or GameTrailers[br]The zombies will be here soon

What a great interview! :imu: Can't really say the same for the trailer though because the camera was bluring everywhere and just moving too fast. I wanna see gameplay, or better yet, me playing it. :cheese: *I put the first Left 4 Dead trailer on youtube:

Cant wait for this, perfect game to play with friends/coworkers to relieve some stress :)

This one is on my list since its announcement. It's going to be superb :)

ahh, i <3 Valve.

-dodo

edit: and turtlerock ofcourse.

Awesome. :E I can't wait. This and Crossplayer? Looks like the MP co-op game is really evolving this year.

this is gonna be awesome

is it just me or did that video have some dynamic shadows?

I'm looking forward to seeing what additions they've done to the source engine. If they think they can compete with current X360 games with just Source on it's own (and no new shaders) then they've got to make some seriously good gameplay.

Well, they do have new shaders :p

What you saw is the most advanced version of Source. So yes it is dynamic shadows just like the Episode 2 gameplay trailers.

There's also either parallax mapping in there or some VERY good bumpmapping.

I'm rather disappointed they are reusing default textures and audio, but I sure hope the gameplay makes up for that.

And the zombies look cool too. I'm impressed. Now, to get better internet and some zombie-killing buddies...

Where the **** do all these technology whiners come from? If you want pretty pictures go visit a ****ing gallery. The fun in a game is how it plays not how it looks. The GTA games look like shit but play great. Doom 3 all rigged up looked fantastic, but was the biggest snorefest of a game ever. This looks like a fun action game, Who honestly gives a **** about the number of pixel shaders and the refraction?

And since when have game development companies showcased screens labeled as "WIP" or trailers labeled "WIP"?

You assume that. Because if the game is not out yet, and they're still working on it, then it's a work in progress.

Building my 4 man zombie killing squad now.

This game's got alot of potential. The magic of a well done co-op experience like Gears of War and the fun of killing zombies.

Hey, why dont you go and play pong? it looks crap but its fun.

I thinks its called "Shadowing 2".

Expect the release date to be somewhere around the first half of 2008

Man...I really hope this makes it out for Christmas break next year so my chums and I can play it during break....along with Team Fortress 2... that would make for some great lan party fun!

Remember this isn't a Valve game, so making jokes about its estimated releasedate, not quite so funny...

Not sure if it's a joke but...

Zombie Master != Left 4 Dead :)

Zombie Master also has a... Zombie Master who directs his zombie minions on where to go and where to spawn. Left 4 Dead is about having a couple of players on the human team fighting hordes of zombies, and a couple of players who are able to play some of the zombies.
At least, that's what I'm getting out of it.
Anyways, I'll be playing both when they come out :D.

This is simply an observation, and my observation includes the probability that they'll change said content is doubtful to me. And what game development experience do you have, if you don't mind me asking? Do you really understand the mechanics behind creating a commercial game?

You remember the first Half life2 trailer? How much exactly did the final game reflect that original trailer? A hell of a lot changed if you look back at it. If you haven't already you should pick up a copy of Valves Halflife2: raising the bar book, it will explain a lot about how Valve design their games, and why things like the hydra (seen in that initial trailer) never appeared in the final product.

I'm not a simpleton, Kadayi. I've been into game development for nearly 6 years, so I understand perfectly how everything works. Valve's workflow may be different, but in the end it's all the same. Hell, companies are utilizing the same exact photo references for their world materials as others are. Proof of this is notable in Call of Duty 3, Half-Life 2, and Gears of war: all of which contain a lot of the EXACT same content. You may not notice it, but to an artist, it sure does pop out.

As far as Left 4 Dead, I apologize if I am not following the norm and being awestruck, but when a trailer is released with sounds from Counter-Strike: Source and Half-Life 2, it's really a put-down in the visual and audio department. Sounds may change, but world materials will not. It's as simple as that, and if you deny it, I'll be sure to prove you wrong on the release date. Just for the record, both Day of Defeat: Source and Counter-Strike: Source have Half-Life 2 materials scattered all about, so you really think they will make an exception for this sole game? I highly doubt it. And please do note this won't affect my purchase, as I'm quite thrilled about this, because in the end, it's the gameplay that matters. I stated it before, and I'll do it again: it was an observation.

yea, things change very rapidly in development, sometimes your game can go from one look to a much better look just by adjusting values in the lighting, adding ambient occolusion or tweaking normal map settings. but thanks for bringing up bad memories and a bad point. the trailers for hl2 with the hydra were much better then the actual game you got to play. My experience with deving though is things get better, I think valve just set their standards too high and ended up having to cut alot of content in order to release in a profitable amount of time.

I really like the loook of this, gives absolutly no indication of what the gameplay will be like, but if that is ingame movies from a camera it looks pretty freaking tight. seems if it is ingame realtime they seriously advanced source.

It gives more info about gameplay than you know... Sure it doesn't show it all but it generally shows...

You run around with the team of your 4 players shooting zombies trying to get to the end point.

It also shows the "downed" position I talked about weeks ago where they can still fire their pistol while downed until a teammate can help them up.

Sure it's not first-person but it's actually a decent trailer... I wish it was longer though!
