Anyone know much about copyrights and stuff?

Let's say I want to use faceposer and the Source Engine to recreate a scene in a movie using the original audio as the voices of the characters? Would this be legal or would I be in trouble if I put the video out there for people to download?

I would contact the movie studio, but I doubt they have time for me...

if you didn't make it, or you don't have permission to use it, then its not yours to use.

Asking for permission, no matter how insignificant it might seem is always a good idea. The worst they can do is say no, the best they can do is you catch them in a good mood and they offer to help, say send you original recordings or something (rare but it does happen)

Don't ask, and it just annoys people and then they can do anything from warning you to taking things further to make a point to others who might try it.

Though there is some law that says you can use a certain number of seconds of audio, or certain kinds of audio without requiring you paying or getting permission for it.. though i don't know much about that or if its even legit.

In some countries, copyright can be bypassed if its for the purposes of parody, critique and some other things. Not sure all about that though.

try one of those, be polite and ask who you need to speak to, what extension/department regarding getting permission to use whatever it is you want to use. Be clear, honest and professional and don't BS them. If your completely upfront with them and show your simply trying to do the right thing by checking everything with them, they could very likely be perfectly fine and let you use stuff... though if you plan on making anything from it forget it right now, you'll never afford the licencing costs, or even get that far :)

And yes you can use a limited amound of Audio for personal or other reasons as long as it provides no gain or benefit from said audio. I dont know how many students use movies and other audio clips and animate around those, its a good exercise and great for a portfolio. So if you could do the whole thing using source and make it good, I say go for it. But contact Miramax just to make sure. Also you didnt elaborate as to why and what you were going to do with it.
