They didn't call it a 3DS because it doesn't have 3D.

As much as I dislike the name it's difficult to come up with another one that makes sense.

Its probably the worst of the bad choices though. It will literally cause the worst kind of consumer confusion, it sounds like a successor to the ds and predecessor to the 3ds. Now they need a label on all the games and its just a cluster****

They can change their naming conventions easily, just say that 3ds now means "full 3d models" or whatever. 2ds doesnt even fit the narrative because the original DS was already a 2d screen.
