How long do you want HL-EP3 to be? Personally experience:-

Half Life 1:- Around 8 Hours
Half Life 2:- Around 8 Hours
Half Life 2 EP1:- Around 4 Hours
Half Life 2 EP2:- Around 8 Hours

Well i can get exact times but can't be bothered looking at my savefiles from Orange Box, Hope Half Life EP3 is longer than all of them, to deliver a epic cinematic storytelling adventure. With Innovative Ideas never before seen in FPS genre.

Hang on, you spent the same amount of time on Half-Life 2 as you did on EP2 even though EP2 is nowhere near half the size of HL2.

id say itll be 6-8 hours since theres been a progression of length (EP1=4; EP2=6)

I suspect Episode Three to clock the 10 hour mark. Episode One was 4. Episode Two was 6/7.

Half-Life 2 was more like 15-18.

LOL Ok might be my mistake, Exact Times it took me personally on Normal Difficulty:-

Half Life 1:- 8 Hours
Half Life 2:- 7 hr 26 min
Half Life 2 EP1:- 2hr 52 min ( Mmm episode 1 was just scraping 3 hours )
Half Life 2 EP2:- 4hr 46 min ( LOL i thought 8 Hours, Might be because enjoyed it so much )

Yes lets hope EP3 is around 10-15 Hours.

Wait a minute, Half-Life 1 was far longer than 8 hours, so was Half-Life 2!

General Jewel, I think you still have your times wrong. It took me approximately twenty hours to complete the original Half-Life and about eighteen hours for Half-Life 2. Plus, I didn't even explore every area, nor did I take in all of the details, which both games are plentiful of.

8 hours? 10 hours? That is an enormous amount of work even for Ep.3 (considering it took IW 2 years for the 4 hours SP of MW2)

I think 6 hours max tbh.

Since Episodic content has turned out to be a bit of a flop I hope Valve abonden the idea by making EP3 much longer than previous episodes. This would also appease the fans that have been waiting so long for EP3. I'm hoping EP3 will be around the length of HL2 given how long its taking.

I don't think we should be expecting Ep3 to be so long. Longer than Ep2 perhaps, but not as long as HL2. It's still an episode. I bet there's a lot going on with implementing new technology to Source for Ep3, so the time it takes Valve to develop it may have nothing to do with the amount of gameplay.

I don't have any source but IIRC the average playtimes were supposed to be about (for first time)
20 hrs, 15 hrs, 4 hrs, 6 hrs.

WOOW No way! 18 hours! LOL seriously i like looking at scenary and looking at the details and playing with water and general gravity gun nuisance. 18 hours?! seriously i can take a screenshot from orange box it took me that time to finish HL2. Remember i dont think deaths count towards your time? i think? so it may seem like you played longer.

Yeah HL-EP3 should be atleast same length as Half Life 2.

If Ep.3 is going to be 8 hours it would be a dream, but with today's industry standards I have my doubts.

Considering the long wait, I want a full length game. And Valve, please, don't call it "Episode 3", it would be a really bad joke. If I had my way I would skip straight to Half-Life 3.

Agreed with the length but they should still call it "ep 3"

They need to call it Ep 3 since it would take the point of naming the others Episodes.

I think that Episode 3 is going to be around 6-8 hours. Honestly, as much as I love Half Life and Valve in general I'm scared that this might be a disappointment seeing as how long its taking and I know Valve takes forever with everything they do but the whole reason for them doing it in episodes to begin with was to try and get the games out in a matter of a year or less between episodes.

Those playtimes are tough to determine. I noticed that when playing for the first time it felt long. But after playing many times through you can just rush it through and even skip at many "stops". For example when at half-life 2 you are driving the coastline road and at one point there's a shield but it's open from the right side. You can park the vehicle at that spot and use gravity gun to yank the car through there if you are lucky/clever. These kind of tricks will allow you to progress much faster. Same thing if you skip the side scenery/secret spots for bonus bullets/stuff.

I would personally want to enjoy the game through carefully and make sure I wont miss anything. Rushing it all through would be silly at first time :)

I was just provoking. What I mean is: assuming that Ep 3 is out in 2010, I will be totally disappointed by a 6-8 hour game. 3 years are a lot of time, so Valve may call it "Episode", but I am really expecting something more.

It took them 6 years to make Half-Life 2, a roughly 18 hour long game. Episode 3 is probably going to take around 3 years or less, so expecting it to be as long as HL2 is pretty ridiculous. If they work at the same rate as they did when making HL2 then we should get around 8-9 hours of Ep3. Then again, Ep2 took them about one and a third years to make 6 hours of content, so if they work at that rate on Ep3 then we might well get 10+ hours. I guess it depends on what else they're doing; HL2 required them to build the entire source engine pretty much from scratch, along with all their other tools they use now, so game length divided by production time was smaller for that game.

Godron, your math is right but, in my humble opinion, Valve release times are way too long when it comes to Half-Life. I will be too old to play games when HL3 is out.

10 Hours would be cool. But i think that Half life 1 was longer than What you said.
Half life 2 for that matter aswell.
