According to PC Gamer WAAAAY back in June 2003, HL2 will be AT LEAST 36 hours long. Well, it's been a year+ since then. What do you think now? They could've added gameplay, levels, etc, or even cut some. What do you guys think?

Also, I found it funny in that same preview. They talked about how HL2 was coming out in less than 6 months. 'That's right, you'll be playing HL2 before Doom 3,'etc. Fun stuff.

It's probably the same length. Anything beyond 40 hours for a FPS tends to get tedious.

its longer than doom3 i know and hl1 was also pretty long so i guess it will be 1 hell of a sp game and dont forget the damn huge mp options and mods

Well way back then that kind of estimate would have been most likely from Valve, and generally developers overestimate by quite a bit just how much is in there. Of course it depends on play style and difficuilty, but 2/3 of the dev's estimate is usually a more reasonable value for me. I'd think that value would be a guess as to the content they were adding, but who knows.

i think they said it will be 36 hours long,
but i'm shure that you could play it 20 times over and it will be a unique experiance each time.

All these estimations tend to contradict each other, because in an interview with Gamespot back in 2003, Gabe Newell said the single-player game was about as long as Half-Life, up to around 40 hours.

Except my first time through Half-Life only held around 15 hours, and I took my time with the game too.

In my honest opinion that's about the right length for a game these days for me. Not too short and not too long. It bothers me when a title artifically overstays it's welcome with cheap trial and error gameplay tricks...

The one thing which I think will help give Half-Life 2 a stretching dynamic with regards to completion, will be the physics and the AI. Bar the inevitable scipted sequences, I imagine toying about with the game's environment for sandbox purposes is going to be dependant on how far the player wants to take it.

Which is a good thing in my book.

Very true,

in my case I always insist on seeing every little corner of the maps so it'll probably take me 2x as long as the devs estimate :)

I recall reading Gabe telling us that the game would take about 48 hours(days) to complete, if you did not have any pauses, deaths or have to load a quicksave of some sort.

But it's ages since he said that i think :E

48 hours with no dieing and no stops! that sound insainly too long woulnt it start to get boring after 50 hours+ of gaming one game (accounting for the dieing and pauses).

how long ago did you hear this?

The problem with estimates. There is no real way to determine it because some like to rush through the story just for the main story; while others like to take their time and explore the area so there is reall no way to tell which is closest its all up to personal playing.

As long as it's longer than Blueshift. The best 2 hours of my life :E

probs still the same length, hl1 was long , has anyone seen the video of sum1 beating it in an hour? thats some crazy stuff.

Yep no problem! Go here:

http://www.planetquake.com/sda/other/halflife.html

The current fastest time is 45mins 45 secs by 'RandomEngy'.

You can d/l the video in three different formats:

Hi-res 640*480 (329MB)

Normal-res 320*240 (158MB)

Demo files (play within half life engine) (28.5MB)

Enjoy!

people who have the leak know that valve has cut a lot of content, due to poor planning
