Robichaud couldn't risk that he might miss his only chance to hear Steve Jobs' keynote address at the annual Macworld Conference & Expo. You'd think that by arriving 8 1/2 hours before Jobs' speech on Tuesday morning, he'd be first in line.

He was 25th.

"I looked forward to this more than Christmas,'' said Robichaud, an accounts manager from Toronto. "I've spent the last six years watching the keynote on (streaming video) on my computer. This was my trip to the mother ship."

...

Jobs rarely disappoints. Part of that is that he is a charismatic speaker with a high-tech presentation. And part of it is that the real Apple freaks seem ready to cheer nearly everything he says.
When Jobs introduced this year's killer product, the iPhone, he held one up and noted that it didn't have a traditional keyboard. Instead, Jobs said, it has "a giant screen."

"Oh, my God!" gasped a man next to me, unable to control himself. And this was in the "credentialed media" section.

Now I have nothing against Apple per say, I would even consider buying a Mac if they were easily upgradable, not overpriced and could run something close to the majority of the programs on the planet. But the culture surrounding Apple bugs the crap out of me.
Oh and that includes their cringe worthy advertising! Remember the ads when Apple switched over to the x86 architecture? "For years now these CPU's have been trapped inside dull little boxes doing dull little tasks, now they are OMGzor 'cus they are in a Mac"*, and what was one of the biggest advantages of the switch, oh yeah - so they could run MS Windows   . And I would hardly call playing HL2 a "dull little task" ;).

macs are good - I use them at work
they are much much MUCH more reliable than pcs, they are faster for all applications and they can be easily upgraded
The inbuilt camera on the newer IMacs rocks!

When it comes to non-gaming things, I quite like Macs

See there you go.

Macs are noob friendly, any noob can pick it up.

PCs require user interaction and maintenance to keep running smoothly and efficiently. That's too much to handle for noobs.

yes because having to tolerate crashes, blue screens, viruses, hardware failures, micro$oft software, lock ups.... make me a better person ;)

If you buy something you damn well want it to work as advertised - apple delivers. A power mac leaves gaming PCs in the dust - the thing is a quad cored beast.

Maybe if you learned how to deal properly with your pc problems you wouldn't have crashes, bsods, virii, hardware failures, etc...

And please, I'd like to see a benchmark comparison. Power mac lawz.

that's like saying a yugo is better than a porsche because it requires more maintenance

macs kick the shit out of pc's when it comes to anything but gaming

To quote PC Gamer magazine:

"...the amazing thing is not that the Mac Pro can do PC games well; it's that it can do them at all."

And from what I have seen from benchmarks, Macs have come a long way.

For the time being, I'll stick with PC's but who knows what the future holds.

sheesh.....why does everyone always give people who use macs so much shit? They need to calm the **** down and go play with windows vista or sumthing....

i use a mac for everything now - I will never go back. I can even run steam on my mac through crossovers in OS X....since macs run intels now anything is possible....and once you use OS X for a week youll never want to use windows again. I used windows gaming rig for years and years and then I got a mac , and I said the same silly things most people say "MACS SUCHS CUZ DEY CANT PLAY GAMES AND WINDOWS PROGRAMS SO THEY SUCK. YEA." - I'll never use windows again, OS X Is just that much better.
Heres a screenshot of my plaing DOD in mac os X. it ran fine, no bugs, no problems at all.....
dod1s2srm9.jpg

And the whole not having to worry about spyware/viruses thing is nice.....

I haven't had spyware or viruses in over four years. Learn2usetheinternet.

And I'll be impressed when you have a pic of DoD:S on a 32 player server with aax4 afx16 at 50fps, not dod on an empty server.

I was in an Apple store over the weekend to pick up an IPOD nano for my Fiance, and I was playing around with OSX and I have to say... it looks pretty damned sexy... though I hope Vista brings that to the table, but if you can get the best of both worlds, OSX and XP on a duel boot... why not? Especially if it can do everything a PC can do...

Maybe if you learned how to deal properly with your pc problems...

Why in God's name should someone have to do that? Do you know how to repair a TV, or a DVD player, or a PVR? Of course not, because they (almost always) work as they're supposed to. Why should computers be any different? They're consumer devices as much as any of the boxes in your living room is. This is what makes Macs better than PCs for the majority of people. Most people have got better things to do that learn the technical side of things that should just work.

Disclaimer: I don't own a Mac. I used to use Windows, for the sake of games (when I bought my laptop the only thing stopping me buying an iBook (as they were at the time) was my passion for games) and have moved to Ubuntu Linux. The only thing I really miss from Windows are the games.

Learn2usetheinternet.

Or just use a OS that is a bit more secure? Or at least not targeted by the majority of virus writers/propagators.

I had an iBook for a while and loved it...until some lady broke it on a plane. stupid f&%&*ng *^*t.

I used my friends crappy Mac Mini for a bit and soon realized how overblown the whole Mac thing is. The thing took forever to load and all the animations were jerky. Just goes to show you that no matter if its a PC or Mac, it'll run like shit with the right specs.

/me doesn't read anything but thread title.
AHAHAHA APPLE FANATICS!!! AHAHA!

that's like saying a yugo is better than a porsche because it requires more maintenance

No, actually its more like saying a F1 car is better than a porsche despite needing more maintainence. Anyway, the guy was asking for it saying that macs are catagorically faster than PCs at everything.

Yeah, because Mac Mini is the technical pinnacle of Apple's range :dozey: . It's a budget Mac, it runs Mac OS X slowly. If the Mini ran OS X perfectly, there'd be non point in Apple making a more powerful Mac.
For the majority of applications, mid-range or top-range Macs run more smoothly, are more stable and are easier to use than top-range PCs. Your point... misses the point.

Great. He owns a Mac Mini, a product that Apple sells to consumers, and it's a piece of shit. How does offering higher end models allow you to get away with ones that run like shit? If it runs like shit then don't put it on the market. What kind of business man are you...

Edit: You are not worthy of your name.

Wrong. The Mac Mini enabled people to get something of the Mac experience at a lower price than previously required. You'd be a moron to expect it to perform at the same level as a 'full' Mac. It stills works, it doesn't crash, and the core applications run fine. The main qualities of Mac OS are still there. A budget PC would run Windows XP slowly.

Your bizarre reference to my name is irrelevant and bordering on flamebait. Don't bother.

Show me where I said I was running high end software on the thing. I used it for web surfing, AIM and iTunes and the thing lagged like a mother. I get it, its entry level, but entry level should have no problems handling the basics.

Oh and I've ran Windows XP on a 300mhz laptop at full speed for two years now so don't try to bring XP into this.

Maybe next time Apple will throw in a 7200rpm HDD.

So it was slow, but it still worked, right? I can't see your point. There are cheap PCs that run XP sluggishly (I call total shens on the idea that your laptop ran XP satisfactorily, if you were doing anything besides web browsing and office tasks. Even then XP would've struggled). You want a fast computer, you pay more. I think for most people, a slow Mac Mini would be better than a slow (crash prone, virus vulnerable) PC. And
Apple could include a faster HD as default, but that would raise the price - a bit against the purpose.

Well see. For the specs of the Mac mini, I'd get a fast enough PC and it would cost me much less.

Crash prone + virus vulnerable? Been a while since I experience either, but I must be one of the lucky ones, eh?

It didn't win me over, thats for sure.

I hate macs because the port of Maya ****ing sucks balls.

Meh, I don't hate Macs. Bugs me when someone says "ZOMG MY MAC TEH PWNS YOUR PC"
.....my PC doesn't crash a lot. Maybe once a month? I can play more games on my PC too.
Its my internet connection I have to gripe about

Heh was discussing the iPhone with some friends today, can only store 4-8gb of music on the phone itself and its expected to be priced at around ?335 at launch for the 4gb version.

Surely you could buy a decent 30gb/80gb video ipod and get one of the latest phones (on contract) for practically the same price? The iPhone itself has a swish looking interface and all but it doesn't seem very practical to me, especially with 2 screens that could easily be damaged with constant transport and I particularly, and almost everyone, carries their phone on them alot.

I like macs for their ease of use and software reliability (don't laugh) ... By that I mean the fact an 80 year old woman can buy a mac and use it every day for 20 years without it going tits up.
Granted you could get this sort of performance out of a windows machine, but definately not from an out-of-the-box installation. Give it 3 months and you see your loading time has quadroupled and give it a couple of years and something causes you to NEED to format.

Granted Apple aren't for the hardcore gamers, but for people that don't want to spend 10 hours a day infront of their PC, the mac is an ideal machine for newbies etc.

But then you get hardcore gamers like xcellerate that try and make out like Apples suck because they don't play games as smoothly as PCs. Ah well :D
