Lets make fun of Apple fanatics!

I use Macs all the time in my film class. Really, the only thing they have going for them is fewer viruses and Final Cut Pro. I loathe the interface completely.

But then you get hardcore gamers like xcellerate that try and make out like Apples suck because they don't play games as smoothly as PCs. Ah well :D

Now that was uncalled for, I just put up some graphs. The apple beat the pc in some things and the pc beat the apple in games.

I've been using Macs for about 10 years now (I do visualisation work) in the office, but I prefer PCs for home use, simply because PCs despite their faults offer up far greater flexibility, in terms of software choice, hardware options and usability.

Contary to $kelet0rs claims, upgrading a mac isn't easy at all unless you have a tower workstation (which are accessible), in fact their bottom line machines (Imacs/Powerbooks etc) are generally weak as shit to encourage you to pay for the optional extra upgrades (ram, processor, HD capability) right off the bat and such initial upgrades off the base sales model are always overblown in terms of cost. Certainly forget ungrading any of their laptops or IMACs after you've bought them, you'd need an engineer to open them up without screwing you warrenty and that's costly. Also bear in mind upgrading with a Mac means adding a new HD, adding Ram, changing the Graphics card (if your feeling adventureous). It doesn't mean putting in a new motherboard or changing the processor, it's strictly an upgrade lite device.

Unlike Microsoft, Apple are in the business of selling hardware boxes and it's in their interest to ensure that every few years you buy a new box off of them, rather than retrofit your old one. Back when they first came out the first IMacs were heralded as these great innovations, they even won plaudits in the design community, but you'd be hard pressed to find any of them still in active use, most are sitting in landfills blatently not bio-degrading (amusing fact given Steve Jobs pally ways with Al Gore).

So enlighten me oh wise one.

starting software(i have yet to see a machine with as clean ,well running and usable set of starting software than a mac, also just because you might not use the software, lots of people do)
generaly if you want the same well working software in a pc for the photo, video, music, web end of things you would be spending alot more moola

lack of viruses & spyware(just because you dont get them doesnt mean other people dont),
generally better support than most other companies.

the only downside i really see to macs is lack of expandability, and the price they charge off their website for hardware upgrades(makes the retail store i work at seem like pricing saints for some stuff).

and also on the gaming end, arnt the xbox 360's running ppc cpu's?

The spyware and virsuses comment is kind of silly. If the install base hits Windows level then you're going to be seeing plenty of Mac specific viruses and spyware.

The simple fact is that if you want to, you can avoid viruses and spyware on a Windows PC. Its much harder to do and requires upkeep, but it's not something that requires immense knowledge.

I'm not saying that Macs are worse or better than PCs. I just don't see what the big fuss is about with 'em.

I see the heat has moved from the Religious thread to the PC vs Mac.

I don't care as long as I don't play my games on a console.

The only topic more heated than both of these combined, is the Rosie vs Donald feud.

OMFG PC > CONSOLES LOLOLOLO!!! CONSOLES R 4 KIDZ U NUB!...

I haven't had spyware or viruses in over four years. Learn2usetheinternet.

And I'll be impressed when you have a pic of DoD:S on a 32 player server with aax4 afx16 at 50fps, not dod on an empty server.

I know how to use the internet. I never got a virus on my pc ever either. It's just nice not having to worry about that shit.

Well I can't run DOD:S on a macbook with an Intel GMA 950. How about you buy a me a nice Macbook pro with a better video card, then ill show you a screenie.

Jesus christ, you guys ****ing hate macs.

And your to tell me that old Pentium II's are still in use today too? Try running xp on a pentium II or an old celeron. (These were the main processors in use during the introduction of the first imac. You can't. I bet you that for every iMac in a landfill theres 3 more pentium II boxes.

Great. He owns a Mac Mini, a product that Apple sells to consumers, and it's a piece of shit. How does offering higher end models allow you to get away with ones that run like shit? If it runs like shit then don't put it on the market. What kind of business man are you...

Edit: You are not worthy of your name.

what kind of ****ing business man are you? Dell puts shitty computers on the market that would perform just the same. Tell you what, you go buy the lowest end dell and put vista or windows or whatever on it and try to run some intensive stuff on and you'll it'll perform all the same.
Learn to use logic!
And don't ****ing tell people they're not worthy of their name when you own comments are complete bullshit.
Yet you are still content to completely contradict yourself. Who's the smartass now?
I used my friends crappy Mac Mini for a bit and soon realized how overblown the whole Mac thing is. The thing took forever to load and all the animations were jerky. Just goes to show you that no matter if its a PC or Mac, it'll run like shit with the right specs.

Granted Apple aren't for the hardcore gamers, but for people that don't want to spend 10 hours a day infront of their PC, the mac is an ideal machine for newbies etc.

But then you get hardcore gamers like xcellerate that try and make out like Apples suck because they don't play games as smoothly as PCs. Ah well :D

I'm glad lePobz brings some common sense into a thread otherwise devoid of it.

If games were coded natively for macs, they'd run fine.....but most games are all ports, so the performance suffers.

Yeah, I'm paying for a brand name.

When you buy a windows machine, it comes with little to no software. When you buy a mac, you get a full software suite that is actually useful to do shit with. Thats what you pay for. THE SOFTWARE. Some people could care less about software, thats fine. But usually its the creative/arts/music types buying macs that will use the software for what they do, so its a BENEFIT. You treat everything the apple company has ever done as a shit in the can.
I have a nice dual core athlon rig, its great for games. But I use my mac far more, why? Because of the great software on it. Someday, when you grow older and start having a job and have to do shit instead of shit around playing games all day - youll appreciate having a computer that can help you with you work that already has all the software installed that you need.

Well see. For the specs of the Mac mini, I'd get a fast enough PC and it would cost me much less.

Crash prone + virus vulnerable? Been a while since I experience either, but I must be one of the lucky ones, eh?

It didn't win me over, thats for sure.

You don't understand!!! People don't buy mac's to play the latest PC games! You don't buy a ****ing convertible to drive on a farm! You're paying for:
Form factor.
A software suite that would cost hundreds of dollars to get for PC.
Ease of set-up.
Virus free. (OLD PEOPLE **** UP COMPUTERS, MAYBE YOU DON'T, BUT MOST LIKELY GRANDMA AND GRANDPA DO. So why not get them one they probably wont **** up?)

I want you to understand this. You can't compare a mac mini to a full fledged desktop computer. It is SMALLER. Minuturization cost money! Go buy a PC with the same form factor as a mac mini, and youll find it has a MUCH HIGER PRICE TAG. Here I'll do the work for you:
Shuttle XPC X200: "The X200BA is bearing a price tag of $972 and the high-end X200MA will cost you at $1,240." (Hmmmmm, no software, similar specs, this is much more than than a mac mini!)

So enlighten me oh wise one.

You're far to ignorant to bother for further explanation. I give up.

It's like trying to convince a cat to swim - cats don't like water because they stayed away from it all their lives. Throw a cat in a pool as it kitten and it won't give a shit later in life. People use windows all their lives, they dont realize that the general software experience can be improved.

bah, I ramble, whats the point. I like all computers - I just get in a tiff when dumbheads like these just bitch about shit they nothing about. I'd just as much argue that PC's are good for their selection of software and upgradability. But most of you miss the point that sometimes gaming isn't the be all end all reason to use a computer.

I vote this thread closed. Theres so much bullshit in here you could ****ing wade in it. Nothing will be accomplished here but a bunch more people bitching and yelling this and that....

You do realise that PCs boxes are generally made of metal, and that metal can in fact be recycled far more easily than moulded plastic? Or that given the ATX motherboard format has been in place since 1995 it's entirely possible to still use those very same metal boxes and just swap out elements as and when necessary when upgrading? The only thing you could upgrade with the original Imac was the Ram, there were two additional slots, one the user could manually access, the other required a certified apple engineer to carry out.

Also as you seem to not quite understand this, professional companies don't buy macs to run Apples Ilife apps on (or even the laughable Iwork), they buy it to run Photoshop, Vectorworks, Quark etc on. Applications that are made by other companies. Want to know one of the biggest selling applications that runs on macs? Microsoft Office (for the record). The only decent pro app Apple have under their belt is Final Cut Pro.

well, yes i understand this: the point is, apple hardware is hard to upgrade becuase much of it isn't standard hardware - or in the case of the newer imacs or mac minis - its really laptop hardware. And, last time I checked, plastic could be recycled too.

Actually the only distinct issue with Macs compared to PCs lay in the pre Intel chipset machines (the ones using the motorola chips) and even then the Graphics cards, Ram, Hard drives, CD/DVD drives are all standard types manufactured by hardware manufacturers like Sony, Nvidia etc. It's a complete and utter myth that Macs are made from superior parts. When Apple shifted to Intels it was abundantly clear that Bootcamp was inevitably going to happen.

If a man can't take a beating he shouldn't step into the ring. As already stated I use macs every working day, Macs make great workstations, and overall OSX is pretty reliable (not 100% though), but Apple are just Dell with an OS, nothing more.

Don't forget, ducks marry for life....or so the saying goes. :)
