Lets talk about the soundtrack

for all those who think rock doesn't work with fps's, i loved the music in painkiller. all hard rock during the fighting, and it worked very well

I must say it again: Track 17 rocks! The lull in the storm, man! And its too f'n short!

No doubt. That track is epic-movie quality. They did all I had hoped and more. They took the best tracks from HL1 and dropped them into the sequel, remixed some of the other classics, and added a ton of new atmospheric music that isn't going to get old anytime soon.

Some guy over at HLWorld is streaming the soundtrack, which is kick ass from what I've heard. Not sure if it's illegal, so no links, but find the thread if you want it.

Track 22 is great. Other favorites are 1, 2, and 25.

17 is interesting. Wonder where it's going to be played.

I finally got to the end of the disc, and it seems thats where the HL1 tracks are.

HL1 Tracks:
1 is "Valve Theme (Long Version)", of course.
32 is "Vague Voices", the HL1 opening background music
34 is a short version of "Credits - Closing Theme"
37 is "Electronic Guitar Ambience"
39 is "Drums and Riffs", a slow rock groove.
42 is a remixed, uptempo'd "Alien Shock". Much better then the original.
43 is "Diabolical Adrenalin Guitar." The guitar envelope has a very dull attack that gives it a synth sound.

Not sure if I missed any. If I did, it was one of the unmusical "atmosphere" tracks.

@ Fender, thanks for clearing that up then :D I cant even remember where i read it was Tool, but it sounded so much like them that i just assumed it was correct.

Now i gotta agree with f|uke, it is a complete ripoff. I actually like Nin but i dont think any of there stuff sounds at all like Tool, so i dont think it can be excused by saying they just sound similar anyway. That song is just too much like Tool. Imo there was nobody like Tool when they came around, there sound was very fresh, now there are a lot of clones unfortunately.

edit: fender, your problem is almost 100% your cd drive, i had a similar drive before that would have real trouble playing audio cd's. You have another drive you could swap it over with to try?

Which track is the Coastline song?

And She... seriously, find something to say. Actually, don't say anything at all.

Agreed....Tool rocks everyone elses ass off. And APC is damn good too :D

I'm not sure about it being the drive. I mean....it could be....but I've never had a single problem with my cd drive. And I've played LOTS AND LOTS of cd's in it. Its just weird.

(and I never liked NIN that much either, I'll say they are a great band, but not totaly my kind of stuff)

It's so cool, this game is going to be a rolercoaster of ups and downs, :bounce: OMG just a few days OMG :bounce: , I love track 17 - it's short but sweet. :)
BTW: I am hyped.

There only ingame soundtracks , not proper songs, hence why there short, they will sound gr8 to u when ur blowing up zombies with your shotguns!!! mwuahahahahhahwa

Yeah, I know, just saying - it's not as short as 16 - that's a shock horror tune.

For some reason I can't play my soundtrack on my computer. It works fine in my CD player, but when I put it in my computer it just sits there doing nothing, and the computer thinks the CD drive is empty. So I've only listened up to 23 so far, but 22 was one of the best.

I don't have the OST, but...

So far I've noticed that a few of the tracks seem to be Half-Life 1 tracks. They're mostly short and often end somewhat abruptly, which is very similar to the HL1 soundtrack. I do wish that they were longer.

They are supposed to be short. Half-Life had short tracks for creating mood, emphasizing an event or discovery and so on.

You guys got the soundtrack yet? How come? Jesus, the shipments for Canada are so freaking slow....

Track 11 is pretty nice, pity it is so short though :(.

The problem with that is that I cannot lisent to music while playing HL2 or it could interfere with the sparse mood music, which leaves me musicless most of the time.

Fender had the same problem. I think there is some kind of copy protection on the disc. When I ripped it (for my portable mp3 player), EAC had a lot of trouble grabbing the last 15 seconds of audio. Still it was ultimatly successfull.

I find it more than a little interesting that almost all of the favorite tracks listed so far, are the ones used in the binks! :p

I had a chance to listen to the HL2 soundtrack, and I'd have to add tracks 27 and 28 to the favorites list . . . which again happen to be from the binks. Track 27 is from Tunnels, and 28 is from the Intro with the G-Man.

Overall the soundtrack is pretty sweet. But what's with the recycled HL1 music near the end? I wonder how much of that is used in the game. Or is it meant as a kind of bonus material. Oh, and Track 40 (14 on the HL1 soundtrack) owns big time.

Its still good music. I think its for in-game nostalgia. (Well well, isn't this just like,. old times..)

Damnit, missed that one! Its called Nuclear Mission Jam.

My Gold package came in just today, Hallelujah! The posters adorn my wall, the sticker adorns my computer case, and I put the Strategy Guide up on a high shelf so's not to be tempted. Yes, I am a huge nerd :hmph:

I had the same problem with my HL2 soundtrack not being read by my CD/DVD-ROM drives. The problem with that is that I use my computer for almost ALL of my multimedia needs, which means I don't keep a regular CD player lying around. All of my CDs are ripped to MP3, which I put on my Dell DJ for portable music purposes. So I had to use my DVD player in my living room to actually play the CD. Funny thing is, after I played it in the DVD player, I put it back in my DVD-ROM and it worked perfectly on my computer. I have no complaints, but no explanation either. Maybe my DVD player, ah, "authorized" it or something?

The soundtrack itself is a step apart from HL1's soundtrack. It has less "shorts" and more "ditties" It's less "industrial-horror" and more "industrial-oppression", very minor-key stuff, with the occasional zippy beat. I've only run through the tracks quickly, as I'd like to avoid saying "Hey, this is Track XX!" when the music plays in-game. I can say Track 02, Track 12, Track 13, Track 17, and Track 24 left the strongest first (if brief) impressions, mostly because I recognized most of 'em from the movies/binks. I can make a more informed impression after Tuesday. Also, I found it rather odd that they put all those HL1 tracks at the end. Granted, they are the best of HL1's soundtrack, and anyone who's never heard it before is getting quite a good deal.

*sigh*, this is going to be the longest weekend ever...

I love my Dell DJ. Kicks the tar out of the Ipod IMO. I now have the HL2 soundtrack loaded in and ready to play wherever I go, on self made EAC/Lame 224kbps Mp3s :)

I've only listened to Track 17 (because it's supposedly the best) and indeed, it rocks.

BUT I'M NOT GOING TO LISTEN TO ANY MORE TRACKS DAMNIT! *must keep myself from listening to any more* I want to hear em in HL2 for the first time.

I thought about holding back for this reason,. but I find that often, with music, it sounds sweeter after a few plays. I think that it will still feel very fresh within the context of the game.

Lol. How many people actually even listen to Tool...
Jesus, I bet you think Earshot sucks because the guy sounds remotely like Maynard.

Freakin' A, man! My Dell DJ rocks my pants clean off. I'd put my HL2 tracks in it, but I'd rather not get used to 'em just yet. I want 'em guaranteed fresh when I hear 'em while playing :cheese:

P.S. 224kHZ?? WTFudge?? Or is that 224kbps?

Seen 'em in concert 3 times, APC twice. Been a huge fan since 'Sober'. I've been reffered to as 'the tool guy' cuz I have a bunch of tool tshirts. I'd say I'm a fan. I know their sound, and the Doom intro mimics it.

um i am in Toronto (Brampton to be precise) and i got my gold package 2 days ago now.. so i dunno what u are talking about :)

where in Canada are u? hmm.. hopefully u did not make a mistake with ur postal code or something..

Sorry to bump the topic, but since I finally got to listen to the soundtrack I just figured I'd add my thoughts. This is for the HL2 music only.

Track 02 - The song used in the first 2k4 E3 trailer. One word sums up this song.. awesome. It is a contender for my favorite on the CD. We heard the first part in the trailer, but the second part is new and I love it even more than the first part... starting at about 1:15.

Track 06 is great atmosphere. I suspect it will be used in Ravenholm to great effect.

I didn't like Track 12 in the binks (the first rollermine video), but I like it better here for some reason. The second half of it is cool.

Track 16.... erm.. wtf..

17 is great as mentioned above. I'm guessing somebody dies for that song.

Track 26, along with 02 is probably my favorite from the binks. One of the reasons Barricade was my favorite. Great action music.

As for all of the other ones, my only thoughts are that some sound familiar from some DOS era games, and many have a Russian/Eastern-European feel that should fit City 17 nicely.

I dont see why it should have to die amongst all the "Best Buy Sold It Early!" threads.

That deep baseline is wicked.
Track 16.... erm.. wtf..
Basically, "boo!"
17 is great as mentioned above. I'm guessing somebody dies for that song.
Interesting interpretation. I do think there will be something "sobering" in the context.
My guess is that it is tied to a new perspective on City 17. Hence, track 17. Cooincidence? Probably! But we'll find out..

saywah? dos never sounded that good :p
The only game I know that had good music back in the dos days used Amiga MOD files; "Star Control 2"

so the popular opinion is that track 2 and 17 are the best? i think they are all good and fits well into the HL2 atmosphere from what i have seen.

#16 freaks me out. I wonder what's going to happen in hl2 when we hear it.

By the way, my favorites are: #6, #8, #17, #22, #23, #24 & #26. And my favorite in all of those is #22.

My less favorite is probably #12.

Earshot sound exactly like Tool. No more, no less.

True.

I listened to Track 02 again and the way the end leads into the beginning makes me believe that it is some sort of boss music, of course we know it is used in the scene where you fight the Combine Human like helicopter.. so maybe it repeats until you kill it. It wouldn't surprise me if it was the menu music either.

The reason I think 17 signals a death (either of a person or an idea I suppose) is the trumpet(?) makes it sound like a last stand situation.

The.Spiral said:

After all this talk, I had to give these guys a listen to see what they were about.

They're clearly Tool influenced, but its primarily the lead singer. He does sing a lot like Maynard, and writes dark pseudo-introspective lyrics but can not touch Maynard. The music, however, is more just standard Alt-Rock. They do not know how to write music like tool... not like this NIN guy did for Doom 3. Now if that guy hooked up with the lead singer of Earshot, you'd have a reasonable faxsimilie.
ShadowFox said:

It can't repeat. Theres two 'phrases' of the baseline, the first half and second half. The song ends at the end of phrase 1 (which is why it sounds so cut off), but as the song starts on phrase 1, the timing would be shot. I think they just cut it off to make it seem unfinished, to keep the mood up.

I dont know if HL2 will have any distinct bosses. I just figured it would come up when the shit hit the fan (an intence firefight).

its happened to me before where i have entered wrong postal code for other things.. letters.. etc.

anyway good luck.
