David “SidewinderX” Petkofsky

Hello,

Some of you may know me, some of you may not. I am David “SidewinderX” Petkofsky. I am a staff member at Halflife2.Net. I also lead the mod Cold War: Melting Point. I'd just like to preface this by saying that I am posting this in the Halflife2.net forums, the Half Life Radio Forums, and the HL2World Forums.

I have been an active member of this community since May of 2003, right after I got my issue of PCGamer that broke the story on Half-Life 2 for me. I have been in and out of every part of this community since. What is happening now is horrible. What I am talking about is the abuse, the insulting, everything that is going on between the various sites of this community.

I'd like to say this now. We are fans of a game. Period. We all are looking forward to the same game. We are members of different sites. Some of these sites have different opinions about how to handle certain things, such as the stolen files. Whatever. Why is there this constant bickering between sites? Why are people so... so hateful towards one another? This fighting is childish.

I'm not pointing fingers at anyone or any site here. All parties share the blame. Regardless of what you might say, each site has been in the wrong before, and has acted immaturely in handling it. And I'm not saying I'm innocent either. I've definitely done immature things in these “site wars.” But it should stop. Yes, xxx lied about that. Or yyy has done that. So what? Why make a big deal of it? We are all looking forward to the same game! Some are excited about the mods, some are excited about the single player, some just want to look at Alyx! GREAT! There are, and there always will be, many different sites for this game. But can these sites just be that? Different sites? People can get a second or different opinion at these sites, or talk to other people at these sites. Why can't that be all?

So here is the proposal I make now. Each site, each moderator, each admin, each member, say, “Ok. XXX site did this immature thing. ZZZ site lied about this. YYY Site has this policy I don't like. So what. From now on, I'll just goto the site of my choice, or even all of them. Post in those forums, talk, teach, learn, laugh, whatever. I don't care what this other site's admin said about this site a week ago, I'm a gamer, this is my community. Let me enjoy it.”

We're not competing for some million dollar “Best HL2 Site Award.” We don't have to act like we are.

I hope that all of you read this, and possibly respond. Remember, we're gamers. This is about a game.

Thank You,

David “SidewinderX” Petkofsky

First of all, I dont read even half the threads here, and have only a slight idea of what you're referring to.
On a forum I used to goto (and admin for a bit), there were some excellent rules that I will never forget.
What happens on one forum, stays on that forum, it doesn not affect others. Real life problems stay where they are, and forum problems do not affect real life.

So if a person has a problem with what is being posted on another HL2 community forum, then he/she should complain there, not whine about it here.

....ok I lost my train of thought after writing that last sentence.

Posting in on halflifesource I can understand, but why hl2world? Most major differences between hl2world and this site were patched up a long time ago. Plus munro has been over to the site before and we're all just one big happy family now. (Well, besides name censors, but that's not going to change any time soon)

I think it will be good to spread the word to everybody. Peace can't exist if people don't know about it.

Hell, I didn't even know there was unpeace until I read this... :|

cheers sidewinder, agreed :imu:
and thanks for actually mentioning unity... I tried before but people just kind of made fun of me

I'm all for stopping pointless site flame wars and all, but this talk of peace and unity just seems a bit serious for an internet gaming community. All I care about it being part of a fun community and getting info on the game. I don't care how different sites interact as long as it doesn't interfere with those two things.

Not really disagreeing with what your saying sidewinder, but it's all just a bit too dramatic for me.

Edit: Why didn't you post it at halflifesource though? Unless I'm just missing it.

I think that's exactly the sort of problem he's talking about.
****************** and halfliferadio.com are close affiliates and led by the same management, which may have been why he didn't post at both places, but I don't know why.

Edit: You see, that's exactly what I'm talking about, the whole *** thing is exactly the pointlessness SidewinderX is talking about.

Could someone link to the HLR and HLW posts?

There doesn't seem to be any post at halfliferadio or halflifesource. And the the relationship between hl2world and this site is fine so there's nothing to really discuss.

"I'd just like to preface this by saying that I am posting this in the Halflife2.net forums, the Half Life Radio Forums, and the HL2World Forums."

Half-Life Radio / HLSource:
I have ment to post there, but my account is ina moderation queue to be activated, and I can't post until then.

Unity may well be beyond our reach, but i'd certainly like peace. We all know war is only good for oil :D

Beautifully put Sidewinder, hopefully the members of all sites involved will take the letter to heart.

Congrats on potentially saving the HL2 community from itself.

EDIT: You may want to post the letter over at Planethalflife as well.

The letter points out a few important things, but will this peace really last? It'd be nice if it did, but I don't see this being a long term thing, unfortunately. If it's not us and some other site, it may be another two sites falling out. I don't think there will ever be total harmony.

Neutrino: That's the point. This whole "Site wars" thing is too dramatic in the first place.

Onions: hehe..... so true

Abom: oh ye of little faith. I have some faith in some people of the community. (Note: There are still plenty of immature childish people... out there......no hope for them.)

Oh ye of too much faith? Yeah, call me pessimistic, but I really can't see this lasting long at all... sorry, but that's just what I think.

it was a surprise attack by hlradio, never got passed that. We never retaliated.
