Level design comparison.

I'am looking for peoples opinions on the level designs of half life 1 and 2. :)
 
err.... they're good. :p

Not sure what you mean quite.
With an increase in technology the levels in HL2 look a lot more 'real', since they're less blocky and there's a lot more detail now.

HL2's maps can be a lot more open that HL1's maps could be, because of the engine and technology.
 
I found that with Half life 1, every single room, corridoor and setting had personal charm and care put into it, and had its own personality. Every single part of the map was lovingly crafted, not just slopped together to get from A to B to C like in other games.

Half life 2 had less uniqueness between the rooms, but that was due to the Eastern Europe feel, and it had a lot of effort put into the mapping design, as well as the wow-factor.

Each and every room was different in Half life 1, and in Half life 2 there is no way you can look at any room and say that there is nothing cool in there.
 
I was looking for people’s opinions on the level design. This was intended to include the level appearance, the setting, their layout including their content “buildings and puzzles”, enemy positions and the weapons in each level.

I found the transition from HL1 to HL2 slightly funny. Each level and room from HL1 was filled with puzzles and enemies, which just didn’t require you to walk into a room or building and blast every thing that moves. I found it required a level of planning. However the content in HL2 is better. Like saw blades and paint cans.
 
HL2 is very different in the way that every chapter was designed after a theme of it's own, Ravenholm being the chapter that shows it the most. I like the design of HL2 better than HL1's.
 
Another good thing about is that the path you take is completely pre-crafted, but it feels very natural and logical.
 
Sometimes I wonder how screwed the world would be if by some random chance, Gordon didn't have that vent to crawl through or if the seemingly dead end water filled tunnel actually was a dead end water filled tunnel. Really it's amazing the string of coincidences that came together to make that whole journey possible.

Yeah, it's probably a good thing the Combine can't friggin' aim, too.
 
Although, technically, I'm sure the map design in Half-Life 2 is better, I find myself thinking that I enjoyed the first game, and the progress through the environments, more than the second.

Both were nice, though, I guess.
