Could a lightsaber kill Superman?
What'll REALLY get you is the fact that unlike swords or staves, the lightsaber blade has no weight. You are essentially wielding a handle with no counterweight.
Anyone who's trained with a sword can tell you, THAT would mess you up badly. You probably would slice your own leg off the first time you tried to spin the blade all fancy like they do in the movies, because you twirl a sword by using the blade as the weight that carries the sword in a circular motion.
From the moment the Gravity Gun was mentioned, I was afraid this was gonna turn into a star wars versus combine thread, thank god it didn't...
OMG the Combine would own the Empire! ROFLOFL
NO WAI Stormtroopers pwnzor CPs!
But teh Synths! Teh Synths!!!!
I can almost guarantee you I can pick up a lightsaber and never cut myself with it in my entire life unless somebody forces me to with their own weapon or whatever.
I can pick up an incredibly real and sharp sword, swing it around at my foe without ever accidentally hitting myself with the blade as long as I'm not doing those overly flashy jedi twirling moves that serve little practical purpose when it comes to the blade's effectiveness.

Dude don't bring Captain Picard into this he's off fighting the Borg.
Yes, but real swords have more weight to them. You have a better feel of the weapon's place and position because of the counterweight. Something lightweight like a lightsaber is very different to use, and would take a fair bit of getting used to.
And if you're not doing fancy Jedi tricks 'n shiz, then you're probably just going to be shot any way. In which case, we return to my original point: The lightsaber is generally only as useful as its wielder is.
EDIT: Basically what Darkside said on the previous page.
Druckes said:The theory behind a lightsaber is that the blade is practically weightless. Thus you wouldn't get the balance of an ordinary sword. So you wouldn't know, from feel, where your blade was.
Weight matters, yes... but that doesn't mean you're going to instantly touch yourself with it and forget what end is which and how you have it oriented with your body.
I can and have used objects like, say a laser pointer before, and wielded them like a sword using a powder substance to reveal the beam at night(usually flour). It's not that hard to wave it around like a sword and not have it come in contact with your body. Especially not when you see the area that will affect you as being visible all the time.
I mean come on... it's some hand-eye coordination people, and I'm very good at that. And I actually have retarded pointless practice in the area with the aforementioned flour laser!
Pick up any object that might resemble a lightsaber handle in size... and you can easily manipulate it around(albeit without trying any dexterous twirls of the object) without the area that the 'light' would be coming out of touching you.
Well, unless you people are all uncoordinated clowns.
But that becomes increasingly difficult to do with more advanced techniques and movements that Jedi have to master. And a lightsaber can only be as effective as its wielder is. A lightsaber in the hands of a novice is isn't really too much of a threat, because despite his dangerous weapon, he can still be attacked in a variety of other ways that a more masterful person could deftly avoid.

When you add in the amount of work it takes to get a lightsaber, it's a perfectly balanced weapon. First off, you need to be force-prone so you can even start jedi/sith training, so that's all about genetics. next, you'd need to kill a jedi/sith and steal their lightsaber, or complete your training and go on a quest to get a lightsaber crystal. Then you've gotta build the damn thing yourself and become proficient with it.
Point. You can only (apparently) create a lightsaber through the force.
Not completely true. It's just most non-force wielder don't really see the point of making one when you'll get your ass handed to you by a force-wielder with a lightsabre. Like Solo said, give me a blaster any day.
It was mentioned in one of the books somewhere. And it's extremely complicated. And requires meditation.
I know this thread is a little old, but I wanted to get my opinion in. The lightsaber by itself is relatively useless. You do need extensive training to weild it effectively. The lightsaber does lose charge eventually. In one of the books the battery comartment is opened using the force. Therefore, the force is useful when building a lightsaber. However, in Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy, Jaden Korr builds a lightsaber with no formal force training.

He still had the power of the force in him. He could do it for that reason.
Luke did it from reading a book, but there were Jedi out there who had already done it. And evidently the first person to develop one had not had the training to do so.
But it still requires le Force
Luke did have formal Jedi training before he made his lightsaber. Comparing Luke to Jaden Korr, would be like Luke making a lightsaber before he even met Ben Kenobi.
