I recently installed a router up to my two computers to share my internet connection.
I was wondering if anyone has this router (model: BEFSR41), if you could help me.
I can get it to work, very well, I follow the setup cd. But after a certain amount of time (so far its happened two times and it's random) it just stops working. For both computers, for no reason that I know of. I was wondering if anyone has experienced anything like this (I can just use the setup cd again and it will work again, but its a pain in the ass) if you know how to A: fix this
or
b: how to get into the configuration program/whatever for my router, because it doesn't seem like the setup cd installed any software.
Thanks for any ideas (and I will go to tech support and whatnot, I just wondered if anyone here knew what to do to save me some effort).

Ok well lemme break this up into steps

1. first make sure your internet connection is connected and up and running.
2. plug your modem (using a cat5, cat5e, or cat6) into the WAN port in the router
3. make sure there are network cards installed on all of the computers you want to get online (you probably know that one, just making sure)
4. using cat5, 5e, or 6, plug your computers into the ports in the modem, starting from 1
5. reset the router to remove any settings u might have made. theres a place u can stick a pencil on the front.
6. goto start -> run -> http://192.168.1.1 to edit the settings
7. you probly dont need to edit any settings, so just click ok
8. you MIGHT have to restart your modem and router AND computers, but usually not. try it out and lemme know if this helped.

9. if you want to host games, goto advanced in the router settings (by going to that ip address) goto DMZ Host and put your LAN IP address in it, that will allow you to be seen by other computers on the internet.

Alright, cool. If it ****s up again, I'll try that and let you know. Thanks

Could be a bad router too. Next time it happens you can "reset" the router by unpluging it from the wall and plugging it back in.

aha, I found this in the tech support at linksys site:
The Internet Link Light is Blinking
This is normally caused by the Broadband Modem not being compatible with the Routers Automatic cable detection. This system will detect whether or not the modem needs a cross over cable or a straight through cable, the industry term for this type of detection is Auto MDI/MDI-X.
A hub or a switch will be needed, a compatible Linksys model would be either EFAH05W or EZXS55W.
Connect the Ethernet Cable to the Modem, and take the other end and input it into the Uplink port on the Hub or Switch.
Take another Ethernet Cable and connect it to the Internet port of the Router and to port 3 on the Hub or Switch.
After following these steps the Internet Link should stop blinking.
---------------------------------------------------

**** (it does blink once in a while), now I have to get a switch or hub... pain in the assss

so it doesn't work at all right now? i have the same router, what kind of modem do you have? and is it cable or dsl (or dialup?)

Yeah, It's working right now. I have cable. And I'm waiting to see if it craps out again before I mess with it.

a switch or a hub on its own won't let you share your connection between your two computers....

is there a specific time when the network stops working? or is it totally random? is there anything you're doing at the time it happens?

my advice would be to get the newest firmware for the router, install it, then go from there.

yeah, that's what I did, so far so good.

and it's random, one time I was surfing the net, and the other was when I wasn't here.

Seems like it's working like a champ now. Time will tell.

I get problems with my Linksys router, and it's the same model as yours (BEFSR41). Whenever it happens I unplug the power cord and plug it back in again, it starts working. As long as the problem doesn't come up too frequently it's a workable solution.

I had the same problem with my 3COM router - The problem was that I had entered a static IP (which it is) but due to the connection it has to be configured as a Dynamic IP. Changing this round sorted the problem 100%

Well with my 4 port Linksys BrandBand router, I have yet to have a single problem :P
