You can, but you won't be able to play together, as youll have to sign your friend in under your steam account. So go ahead and load it up, just 1 person will be able to play at a time.

you can play LAN on the same account, but you cant both be on the internet at the same time

If you and your friend both use the same internet connection and play via LAN then you both can play at once and be connected to the same account. I do it all the time. If you are running 2 diffrent internet connections you need 2 diffrent accounts.
