I have a problem. When I open up Half-Life 2, it goes to the game menu, which is just a static, blurred picture of City 17, it isn't animated like the one for Half-Life: Source. I choose New Game, and then a loading screen appears, however, this is only for a second, and then the game goes back to the main menu.

I've tried everything I can think of, I have updated all my drivers, I have restarted etc, but it won't work. My last resort is redownloading all the game files, however, I'm not too keen on doing so. So if anyone has any ideas I would love to hear them.

My system specifications can be seen in my signature.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Right, I have now apparently deleted all local content for HL2. However, redownloading it is apparently going to take me 90 minutes at 50kB/s.

Godamn, servers must be full, its going to take me 320 minutes and that is with a 1 Mbit conection.

I had exactly the same problem. Here's what fixed mine:

- Delete local game content of all steam games
- Uninstall steam
- Remove steam registry entries with regcleaner (not sure if this was needed, but did it anyway)
- Defrag harddrive (multiple times)
- Install steam, log in and ONLY select HL2 to play (download)
- Make sure the game is downloaded 100% and ready (check properties)

After launching the game, I now saw the animated background instead of the blurry one, and the first map loads fine. All looks good.

Hope this can help some people.
