That whole article is just funny from my point of view. People never see their own problems like they see them in others...

slavery was a vital part of southern economy. the north did a lot to perpetuate slavery throughout the region. hehe read about what they did to frederick douglass when he went to new hampshire. hes quoted as saying that southerners loved the black individual, while the north professed to love the blacks as a race. when some northern free blacks were enrolled in a public school, angry farmers towed the entire school into a swamp. slavery was not even particularly vicious for the time, and less than 1/3 of all southerners owned slaves . when abraham lincoln emancipated slaves it crippled the southern economy, and i doubt it will ever be quite what it was. at one point, the south actually exported 50% of the worlds cotton.

dreamthrall, at the time slavery was perfectly acceptable. perhaps not now, but its best not to judge our ancestors on this topic. theyd probably think that affirmative action is disgusting.

my point was that it wasent just the south that spread slavery through the states, the north had a huge part in it as well. this site is old i cant be bothered to read it again, but it wasent really funny then so i doubt itd be now.
