Do you think that most episodes in HL2 will be like HL, where as you usully dont get any teammates, and go by your self?
what do you guys think?

i think it'll be a mix, some solo missions, some with AI.

Yeah, I think it will most likely be a mix, although I will say I think its most fun when you've got other AI buddies around that you can either A. Let them take all the damage for you or B. for an extra challenge try to protect every one of them.

If its anything like the barricade vid then being with ur teammates should be the most fun, but being on ur own should be kickass to.

correct me if i stated the wrong video

It seems that more emphasis has been placed on having NPCs around, rather than most of the game spent with you being solo. Valve's trying to build more emotional experiences with this game, and you can't really have that unless you're always hanging around other people. :)

Only two or three out of the in-game videos didn't have NPCs fighting alongside you, or chatting with you.

Im up for more character interaction and situations like the Barricade bink (as Brink's said) however if Valve have opted to add escort missions of any kind...... Ugh

well lets just hope they dont have escort missions.

Escort missions are horrible, unless one or both of these two requirements are met: 1. The AI of the person you are escorting is exceptionally good, as in they know of to properly use a gun and know how to properly use cover. 2. If the person you are escorting ducks behind cover whenever an enemy shows up. In Red Faction there was 1 escort mission and you barely knew it was an escort mission because whenever enemies showed up the guy you were escorting pretty much disappeared into some nook.

I HATE ESCORT MISSIONS!!!!

There was one game that recently looked good & I was about to buy it untill I fugred out it has 3/4 escoring some dumbass. Don't remember waht the games was.

Anyways, I'm the kind of person who like fighting the hordes by myself. Everything else is cannonfodder.

i agree, i usually don't like playing with AI on my team... UNLESS the coding is really good. it's like watching over ... i dunno, animals are smarter than lots of AI heh... even though it's not exactly advanced, i always got a REALLY good feel and great immersion from teammate AI in the mechwarrior games. especially from mech2: ghost bears legacy and mech2: mercs

I hope there are enough missions you do on your own.

For instance in CoD there was a time i was actually waiting for a mission i was alone again...teammates dont stay cool :(

Well if they plan on doing Blueshift style expansions then you cant play most of the game with barney or other main characters or you will just do the same thing in the Expansion. Although having said that your never meant to see gordon clearly so there probably won't be a Barney viewpoint anyway.

I like playing with NPCs, as long as their coding is good, and it doesnt turn into a escort mission. I don't mind losing if they die, as long as they dont go down like flies. I would quite like to see a game where you are like a team leader of 5 people and they just follow and help you out, but that would require exceptionally good AI coding.

WHAT! CoD teammates are always cool. Most people complained about the Dam mission as being the worst. I liked it all tbh :).

It is a lot harder to do AI for a main NPC than it is for lots of allies like in CoD, because they stand out and you notice them more, and if they fck up you've got to deal with it :).

I'm pretty sure Valve will make this game VERY team oriented in certain levels. Im speculating but based on the barricade video im pretty sure thats whats gonna happen

some one i know is playing Medal Of Honor: spearhead? or whats that other name.. don't know, but he had to escort some AI idiot, he needs to open a door, you have to give him 30 seconds, well, the dude is stuck, i have it a few try's aswell, and i was like 1 min into it, still didn't open the door... result, he got killed, redo mission (and he plays it on "easy" skillz, so, if the game ends there, and you CAN'T get past that point, well, that sucks, so imHo, if you should escort some one, and he DOES die, the game should auto. change the plot (imHo) and not let it end there.. i hate that kind of mission's aswell ... ;p

I think Gabe once stated that you'll rarely be totally alone in an interview.
If they do the friendly AI right, and AI can make judgements for themselves, that gameplay style is much more fun than solo.

I think there will be a mix of missions Solo and NPC team. I'm not worried about the AI, Valve were the first developers to really invest time in developing believable tactical AI (afaik) with the Marines in the original HL¹. The AI bots in CS:CZ aren't too shabby either, I'd expect the AI in Hl² to be comparable if a little bit broader on the range of conversation.

I'd like AI that doesn't just shoot at the nearest enemy, but can detect when you're in danger and provide covering fire, or throw you some spare ammo when you're out, or perhaps even jump on a grenade for you... That'd be cool.

How about AI that goes nuts when it gets too scared, or pinned?

I have a feeling HL2 will have a touch of squad based combat. So you won't be alone often, atleast not for whole levels.

wink wink

If i'm confronted with a squad i'm going to kill them immediately. They do nothing but get in my way, slow me down, and idle with really annoying and crappy animations.

I've yet to play a game where AI team mates have been a help, other than cannon fodder.

Lone wolf the whole way for me.

...what if Valve makes'em a little better than that?

Those barricade citizen's didn't really do much, except take shells for Barney.

What do you mean!? Out of that entire battle only one of 'em died and they were firing the whole time and it was so cool omg the guy was over there lslike lsslivhsioghsoihglcel!!!

The AI will not be bad, this I know.
Like, when Barney asked for cover fire, that was cool.
Once again, you just gotta trust Valve, they will know if the AI is actually helpful or not, they are dedicated to things like that.

Well, the two making a break for it towards the end are cut down by the Gunship, but I suppose that's a matter of the incredible kick-assedness of the Gunship, rather than bad AI...

There would be nothing like walking down a creepy dark corridor all by yourself, and hearing footsteps or propellor blades behind you.
There would be nothing like listening to funky music and bullet-spray and hearing the comrades behind you making tactical assessment on combine positions

Did you do this in Call of Duty?
