I just installed a fresh copy of xp on my formatted hd. Everythings running smooth as silk, except for some reason after the xp loading screen, the screen goes black, and it takes about 20-40 seconds before the welcome screen comes up. Then once its loaded, when i go to the start tab and highlight programs or another menu item, it freezes and takes a minute or two before it comes back. The mouse never freezes though. Apparently everythings running normally though. Any idea?:rolling:

hmm, one of those problems that could be a number of things. Have you installed the most uptodate graphics drivers for your gfx card? Also, have you done windows update? That might sort the problem. Hope this helps.

Nevermind I figured it out. It was a really stupid problem. The thin, wide cable...i always forget what its called, wasn't completely seated in the harddrive. How the hd was running anyway...i have no idea. Thanks anyway.

i take that back. the comp still hangs and freezes. i tried playing an emulator and every 5 seconds the cpu usage jumped up and my whole comp froze. Idk what to do. The harddrive makes a sound whenever it happens too. So idk what to do. :rolling:

Uh-oh. Sounds like a hardware problem to me. Double-check all those connections (not just the data cables, but power too). When the CPU usage keeps jumping, try to have task manager open and see what processes are using up all the juice, it could be some crap software. But strange HD noises ponts to 3vil hardware.

other hardware of the hd itself?

I had a faulty motherboard that was causing those problems once.

I had similar hanging issues and a noisy hard drive. I saved my files, replaced the drive, reloaded Windows and the problem was gone (bad hard drive).
