Long life dieing in games?

Does'nt it seem like alot of games that come out, the hype with them are so much, like doom 3 for example, you go and buy it, thats it, done, 24hours and 40 quid of your life gone.

Theres hardly any new games that I can say I brought and still play. So this thread is basicly 2 things, discuss long life in newer games, and what games have you got that you been playing for a long time?

For me, its..

Half life 1 + mods, got it afew weeks after it came out, playing it since
Neverwinter Nights + Addons, got it on the day.
Morrowind, got it afew months ago
The monkey island games, there fun to play over and over (apart from 4 that I only played once)

Yeah I agree with you. Most games that have been released recently get put up there on the shelf above my computer monitor to gather dust. But there are a few games that I still play since i've bought them. One is ofcourse Half-Life, the other is Homeworld 2, insane fun with my friend over the net with it :). Don't really play any other games anymore. I've got ut2k4, don't play that anymore, same with FarCry too...
I'm not sure if this is the fault of crappy games or if it's our fault? that we get bored with new games too fast?

Think it might be a combo of both.

When makeing a game, I think companys should ask themselves "What should the player do after finshing the game?" As HL, you got all the mods, neverwinter nights have had addons and player made content. But on the other hand, you got people who just like a game and will play it alot, even if new stuff is not added, like you with Homeworld 2.

Yep, sadly that's how it goes now a days and why I hope more games support mods.

The games I've been playing most is definetly Morrowind, Neverwinter and Medeival (and possible Age of Empires 2). HL1 is a bit so and so, DoD kind of lost its charm after ET and BF1942, and I never liked CS...

I think the main problem in new games is that they become too complex for their own good. For example, BFV is an obvious example of a fairly new game with great promise of longevity. But the maps are like 30mb a piece which cant be downloaded ingame, with mods getting 500mb+ in size. That means its not really getting out to the masses... BF1942 just survives because of very few good mods.

Compare to Joint Operations which doesnt have mods (me hoping it will happen soon though :)), but instead has new maps that you get *instantly* when joining a server. But few games go this path, since they just *have to* have that high tech engine with bloated data on 3-4 CDs (JO is 1 CD).

So basicly, it all comes down to size.

Civilization 3.

Damnit, that continent will be mine!

Oh yeah, i've got to add Pharao to that list, oh I played that game for AGES before I got bored with it. I must have made like a 100 own maps and atleast 50 great pyramids...

And since i'm adding games here Age of Empires is one that I played for a few years too.

Half-Life + mods, CS, Dod, NS. Been playing them all for a very long time.

Diablo 2 i played for about 10 months straight at least 3-4 hours each day.

Starcraft i played for about 6 months, and pick it up for a game every now and then.

Played BF1942 for about 2 months, which was good. But i haven't played it in a a long time.

Doom 3 i played through once and will never play it again.

well yeah, I got Quake3 and I ve played it for 3.8 years. Doom3, I bought it but still waiting for HL2 to build my dream PC.

I am 99.9% sure that HL2 could live up to a year + its mods. D3 can live up to 1 year as well with its mods.

Mafia I re-install once in a while to try and get through the Freeride Extreme.

Diablo 2 I played until a few months ago....

Max Payne 2 is getting some decent mods, every once in a while I get back to it.

IMo, Civ 3, HL1 and it's mods and Morrowind are the three longst lasting games ever.

I'm still playing Civ 3, and enjoying every second of it.

I still play UFO - Enemy Unknown now and then

It was relased in the states as XCOM - UFO defence or some such.

edit - My reason is it's an almost perfect game in what it sets out to do. the squad based combat is nearly perfect, the geoscape is nearly perfect. The random maps add lots of gameplay.

Freelancer is pretty cool online too. Still play it sometimes.

Well, for a game to have replay value, the developers have two choices;
Make the game magic or stuff a lot of modability into it.

Games like Half-Life and Jedi Knight 2 have both.

 I bought Battlefield: Vietnam, played it about 5 times, that's about it.

Although I still play Moh:AA online, been playing for about 2 years now. I play Ravenshield about a 1 year and a half. That's about it. Most other games I've played single player once and that it, except for Doom III I played whole thing in single player twice. Oh yeah, played CoD's multi couple times as well and that it put that baby away.

I played RTCW/ET in clans for around 3 years. CS before that. Other than that i've found few games (especially pc titles) that have any longevity.

There's a few exceptions - BG2 lasted a while, as did AoE :) However, I find consoles generally provide longer lasting games - Golden Eye/Perfect Dark, Mario Golf/Party/Kart, Monkey Ball 1/2, Halo all get played regularly.

There's very little originality and innovation in the pc market these days - we just get more of the same, but with better gfx, or on a larger scale. (This is probably why people are getting bored)

the only game i play is Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri.

the only game, ever.

i am a monster :D

No other game, except HL + mods has kept me occupied since 2000
- present.

usually when i play an ordinary game, i complete the SP missions then play it online for so long depending on how good it is. after that i never play it again.

ive completed HL: 3 times (im half way thru on hard)
OP: twice (started a new game last night on normal)
BS: twice

and i play HL with various mods online everyday.

i cant name any other game that is that good

I think the videogames should hav something like a skirmish mode
and the only purpose is to play it over and over again

for example imagine a mode of HL1 (or HL2) were you choose a level and you choose what enemies you want to fight and just fight it

or make more longer games

Heh...I'd still be playing red alert(I sometimes install The original C&C but the pixels are too big to handle:O) if I had the CD. Only halflife and Starcraft have occupied me for that long really. That isn't to say newer games don't keep me going...they just havent had as long to stand the test of time. For instance, I still play Max Payne 2 and sometimes dable in Far Cry. Morrowind is fun to mess about in and I really love playing Zero Hour, especially when I've made the maps and even edited things in the game (there is a program which lets you do it really easily. Its not as good as a rules.ini, but its the next best thing.)

So some when else still likes Red Alert also. God I love that game.

I have the same thing going on. Its almost like old engines are somehow friendlier or more appealing or something, I went back to tribes2 yesterday and I play halflife mods otherwise. No new games have really took my eye or have been interesting or anything, I'm disappointed with lots of the new stuff. Hopefully half-life 2 and the source conversions will all retain the old 'flava' and keep the same pace and such.

meh.

I usually complete a single player game and then never play it again, thats why multiplayer games are much more fun, half life + diablo 2 have been some of the longest lasting games for me since they have multiplayer and mods which also have multiplayer. If a game hasn't got good multiplayer it usually isnt worth buying. The only exception ive found is deus ex. I love that game :D, oh and metal gear solid 2.

Morrowind :E

the game is flippin huge, and there's endless mods...that game will probably last you years.

games i still play after their release are Championship Manager 03/04 (no-one here plays it, i'm all alone ;( ), Morrowind, and Civlization (yes the crusty old dos version).

Planescape Torment, System Shock 2 and Deus Ex are games i play about once every year or so. like good books, it's good to re-read (or replay) them as you get older, because you get more out of them.

Morrowind is intimidatingly (sp?) huge, I'm overwhelmed by all the options and paths that you can choose. I like just walking around (and getting a resting place before dark before I get pwned by all the monsters at night).

Man you should play Star Wars: Knights of the old Republic. Its a pretty bad ass game. Just got it this morning after reading revies on it.

i cant stand Civ3, i mean just how units move..err 1 square at a time. But the computers were pretty nifty when it came to alliances\etc. Thats why i like rise of nations. Combines games Empire Earth's style and then civ3 intellience, plus its own cool things = 1 sweet game.

Morrowind is a great ass game.
Elder Scrolls 4 news seems to be coming soon (Morrowind was Elder Scrolls 3)
http://www.elderscrolls.com/
For 5 days the middle sign has stayed to what it is (Means O) and the countdown began. New quotes on top every new day. Hopefully its info about the next elder scrolls. On there forums they also got a thing discusing it(new forums).
But ya morrowind is like the damn king of Single Player. Insane amounts of mods! It's a must have game.

No-one, except Feath. I'm in the year 2010 in my latest game and apparently I've been playing it for over a week.
