By the time HL2 ships, a whole new generation of 3D cards (both from NVidia and ATI) will be out, and you can be sure it's going to be the fiercest competition in years to get the card that runs HL2 best.

And for those on a budget, this means that the newer cards will be driven even cheaper, so perhaps that 9800 Pro will be within your budget by Christmas.

The bright side, to me, is that there will be a Half-Life 2 benchmark to test my system with.

thats the bright side??!! that the card i bought specifically for hl2 will be outdated??!! thats pretty ghey

negative

HL2 has been delayed...

I dont have time to get $800 (Aus $) for an Über vid card

:/

Personally I think this was all about steam. Do you guys really think that so many people would have rushed to download the 4-700 meg Steam installer if they knew half life 2 wasn't coming out anywhere near soon? Would all of the file distribution sites like fileplanet, fileshack, etc etc be clogged to the brim because of all the Steam downloads all at once? No.. this was pure selfish motives on their part. They didn't announce it on purpose.

Indeed, I've already got my 9800 Pro. But yeah...

I'm now looking forward to Max Payne 2 as my next PC game purchase.

yeah, I might just pick it up.

Or homeworld 2. or jedi academy. or i might just save for max payne 2...

yeah get halo so us PC gamers can show the Xbox dorks how the game is played.

Xbox dorks? ....stfu noob :)

Xbox is great, especially one with a modchip..Well, my xbox is pretty much a computer now, I have linux on it, a 30 gb h/d....

Ok, anyone complaining about having bought hardware for HL2... what IN THE WORLD could possibly have convinced you to make financial decisions based on A PC GAME DEVELOPER'S RELEASE DATE?! Either 1) you haven't been following the game industry for more than a couple months, or 2) you keep getting fooled over and over again.

Statistically, the chances of a major PC game actually making its first announced release date is about 1 in 100. After IT WAS OBVIOUS MONTHS AGO that Vivendi was telling retailers it wouldn't make Sept, that 1% chance droped to about 0%.

Seriously, I've tried telling this board for months that Sept was pretty friking unlikely, but until now it was overrun by the "GABE KNOWS JESUS, NOTHING MATTERS BUT WHAT HE SAYS!!" crowd. Now it's overrun with the "GABE MUST DIE, I TRUSTED HIM WITH MY LIFE, I NEVER EXPECTED A SOFTWARE RELEASE DATE TO SLIP" idiots. Get a grip people, christ.

indeed, that is something thats pleasing, i'm planning to buy a 9800 pro, and with a newer card released, the price will be in my grasp... i'm so glad i didn't buy something else and i chose to wait

Heh, I planned on buying a 9800 on the 27th. I'm gald I waited this long.

well if its truly delayed its really not that big of a deal (if were talking 2-3 months here)

remember that we still have far cry and stalker to look forward too, plus max payne 2 and lots of other cool games....

Heck i would'nt even get to play the damn game before late october/early november---but again this is very bad for valve's reputation in the community.

finding alternatives because we think the game is delayed need beaten with a ****** hammer.

Absolutely. This is the only thing that is preventing me from going totally insane with depression over the delay. I won't be able to get a new graphics card until 2004.

If Half-Life 2 would have come out on the 30th, I would have bought the game even though I only have a crappy Nvidia Vanta LT graphics card in my computer which more than likely won't run the game at all. But now with the delay, I have some extra time to save up my money to get an Ati Radeon 9800 Pro

And like you said, I just may be able to afford it by the time the holiday season rolls around if they lower the price.

and you're implying what? good sir....

Ahhh man, what if max payne 2 was delayed? Then we'd be f*cked.
<siigh>
hope this is resolved in less then 3 months. But that's wishful thinking.
Let's not forget that hl1 was delayed over a year, and tf2 . . . er long time. But none got so close before delay, so thats good (sorta?)

The card will still play the game just as well. But more people will be able to afford them.

And considering the first Max Payne took something like 5 years to make, that's definately a possibility. :p Though not a probability. Hell there's more PR for Max Payne 2 now than there was for HL2 minus the tech videos that only a very small minoirty (i.e. us) got to see.

Amen to that. As much as I hate to be the type to say "I told you so", its really friggin hard to not do it when faced with such kind of mindless fanaticism.

Give every one a break, there was so much conflicting information (both sides had decent arguments) it was a one in two chance to get on the right side (or do the cowardly thing and sit on the fence like me).

If the new cards mean reduction in prices in the current cards (9700 PRO etc) then yay :)

I agree with cowboy about the release and all that i kinda had a feeling it wouldnt make it just hoped i was wrong. O well now ill be able to get the ATI 9800 pro and the other games should hold us over. (inless they all get delayed which would really really piss me off)

You didnt' have to say "we told you so" at all. Hell, you didn't have to warn us either - it would've ended up the same way. But NOOO, the only logical reason to attempt to warn people is just to gloat. You couldn't leave it alone? You just had set up your potential gloating routine just in case the game was delayed (which had a probably chance of occuring).

Sure you can post your opinion, but you can't deny it was only for the chance to gloat and rub it in.

The bright side is, that now we can wait for a finished game.

Well than, I was gonna buy radeon 9800np this week, but as it seems, if hl2 will be delayed long enough i might even get the 9800pro for the same price :)

Ok how about this, if you're going to wait to save some cash here's a way to save even more: wait for price drops, buy the NP and flash to pro! "teh win" : )

And with the rest of the cash you can buy a brand new pair of boxers lol :D

hmm...that might be a bright side because then the cards that are awesome now will be nice and affordable.....if I got a new video card (Radeo 9800 Pro, or something) well..... *drool...*

(Athlon XP 2.08 2800+)

That is exactly what I was thinking, and maybe even secretly hoping for. I can't afford stuff like I used to, bills simply take to much of it, and I really wanted to get a 9800 pro. Now it looks like I'll be able to. yay :D
