Hi, I'm looking for a team for an HL2 mod. I want to make a multiplayer Final Fantasy 7 mod. I really like and miss the FF7 world with its kind of natural vs industrial look. Swords and guns, magic, rusty vehicles, chocobos, Shinra soldiers, Avalanche, etc. Ah the memories!

Possible location ideas:
-Midgar
-Nibleheim
-Junon
-Kalm/Chocobo Ranch
-Corel Area
-Cosmo Canyon Area
-Rocket Town Area
-Wutai
-City of Ancients
-Icycle Inn/Great Glacier
-The Crater

So FF7 fans, I need the whole lot, programmers, modelers, texture artists, mappers, sound guys, web designer, etc. This would be a fun mod with lots of possibilities.

Nice idea, but don't you need permission from the producers of the FF series to make a MOD of it?

Nope.

They don't have to know about it.

Why not just play the original game, if you want to play a FF7 mod go to japan or china and ask one of the gooks. Damn.

not a lot of FF7 fans here, are there...
please explain your opinion instead of saying it is a gay idea.

Obviously if you are not a fan of FF7 I don't see why you should bother posting in here.

Final fantasy was never really meant to be made from a shooter engine and alot of the appeal is the way they do combat. Im not sure how well it would carrey over to half-life but if you pulled it off it could be a sweet mod

you forgot option 5: not worth it since your ass will get sued
and 6: come up with something creative

bah there are enough creative things out there. I didnt really want to recreate the FF7 game, I wanted to take the characters and settings and throw them in another style of gameplay. Sort of like Super Mario Kart and all that. But hey, it's hard to find something that hasnt already been done.

what is the average age around here anyway, you people dont have to f*ckin shit on me for throwing out an idea.

I give the man in read 1 hour before he's banned.

*Edit* Ignore most of them. You should have posted in general editing, but oh well. Would it be multiplayer or single player? fps or rpg?

Sorry, I just found out there was another branch of forums, I only saw News and Announcements, General Discussion, HL2 media, and Steam User forums...

My bad.

funny how you actually didn't edit your post....

*Edit* SiN, it's alright.. we all make mistakes... like our friend the man in red....i htink his preacher made a mistake when he was a child.....

and to answer your question it would be a multiplayer, and maybe a mix of RPG and FPS.

I don't find anything humerous about flaming others with one-worded threads

I dont really care about what you've done or will do, I only want feedback on the subject, no need to tell again how you feel about it, I'm old enough to guess.

See, people like these are cowars in real life. Thery were abused as children, and they grew up weaklings, so the revert to primal instincts of name calling online, because they are afrid of what would happen if they used these words in real life to real people.

can't you just leave, get something better to do...

how many times in the run of a day do you say gay? It has been said in pretty much all if not all of your posts. Is there something youd like to tell us?

I hear they have muzzles for people like you.... and i'm sure my Kbar could have fun with your fingers. But it won't come to that, cause i'm a nice guy. now please stop posting.

Ok, first, any mod can be made out of the Source engine. The limits come from yourself, not the engine. Secondly, even if you got a whole team together to make this game for you, while you sit around doing nothing but tell the dev team what you want in the game, you'd either get sued by Squaresoft, or have your mod denied/blocked entirely from being placed on Steam by Valve.

Do you even have any experience at doing any of the above abilitys?
(I left so many mod teams where the leader didnt know anything about game development, nor had any talents even remotely related to computers..they just start up mods just because theres some kind of game they want made for themself.)

If you miss the ambience and story of Final Fantasy 7, and you were REALLY serious about starting a mod team (and actualy contributing a boat load of work yourself), the best thing for you would be to create a completely new RPG mod, that has its own story and characters, but combines and interpolates the design and mechanics of FF7, including the ambient feel of the world. But there are many tough design decissions that would arrise due to the fact that your making a transition from a more or less 2d linear world, (excluding the 3d battle system) to a fully immersive, interactive, physicaly simulated world. What you could do, is create a mod that mimics your own version of the story before, or after the events of FF7. This would not only allow you to use new characters instead of the originals, slightly altered looks for certain common locations, and take out the chance of being sued, but also allow you to bring a sense of refreshness and nastalgic to the world of FF7. This would also make it easy for your story line to take into consideration any players who might download your mod, who have never played the original. Of course this is just my opinion, there are more than one way to accomplish this task. Avoiding the chance to get sued is your number 1 priority for this kind of mod. Once your past that, its on to coming up with a concept that would make your interpritation of FF7 work in a 3d online environment.

On a final note, whenever someone replys to a post with a single uncompleted sentence that includes nothing but vulgar language, references to sexual preference, etc. Just ignore them, use the report button as your response to the abusive posts instead. Replying to only those who enter the discussion formaly and maturely has much more gain overall.

Bass, no, at the man in red.

You've got some GREAT points there man, but I didn't really mean for me to be the leader of this project, I mean I could asign a leader ;) and do alot of the concept designing and PR work, I'm also a mapper but I don't consider myself experienced enough to make mod-quality maps. But creating a world similar to FF7's is what I've wanted to do all along, but I didnt know if people would understand what I meant. I am not a greedy guy in terms of power and recognition, I just want to encourage people to build this mod with any help I can give them.

Thats good to hear, I wish you luck then.

good idea there, but a little ambitious ;)

anyway, im a huge FF7 fan.. and would like to see something like ur idea be developed and stuff.. but im not here to offer help because i have zero experience with anything related to mods.

i can offer advice.. and i'll start with saying that Adam has made some really neat points.

however, if u are strung on doing exactly the FF7 storyline/characters, then maybe u can try asking Squaresoft for permission? but somehow i think u would not get it.. and then that would make Squaresoft aware of ur idea and be breathing down ur neck or something every time u come close to incorporating an FF7 idea..

this mod seems like alot more work than most other mods.. just looking at the idea from the outside.. so u might want to have more pple involved than a normal mod team may have.. i dunno this is just guessing on my part.

good luck

I've fallen in love with you. :) This mod MUST BE BROUGHT TO LIFE.

Hello SIN55! I was actually talking in #wavelength (gamesnet) about the possiblity of an FF7 mod. I would actually love to see FF7 redone in 3d, in an engine like Source. However, there are a number of major shortcomings with a plan like that.

IF Squaresoft agrees to it, the game would require a huge amount of content to complete. Maps and voice actors up the yin yang, it would take a couple of years for a professional mod team to complete, much less a small amateur team.

Also, there's the issue of that rumor I've heard about Squaresoft redoing/doing a sequel to FF7. If this is the case, then the chances of them letting you do a mod are even slimmer, and the entire point of doing a mod would be diminished anyways, as you could just play Squaresoft's redo.

However, keep me posted on the development of your idea, as it is of interest to me to play an FF7-like mod on Source, however you end up doing it. A simple battle simulation (Battle Square) would be more then sufficient, think about how fun it would be to battle over the internet with a peer FF7-style! It'd be hot.

FF7 RuleZ!! lol Seriously, that kind of MOD would be very interesting especially if you could create a FF7-like battle system and a third person view. Like Gabe said, he's eager to see MODs other than FPS on the Source Engine. Of course that would be great if it wasn't an entire FF7 copy but rather an inspiration. btw FF7 is soooooooo Cool!! I miss Aeris ;-)

Ever get the feeling you're not wanted?
Seriously, if you are seventeen, please act like it. Your behaviour is shameful.
The guy posted an idea. No need to go all apeshit with the flaming.

Try to post things that at least sound intelligent instead.
Or leave. Forever.

*edit* Sidewinder is probably right about the abuse.

sorry if I did not make this clear enough, but my idea was NOT about recreating the FF7 game itself, it was more about making a multiplayer game INSPIRED by it. Voice acting is really not something I enjoy in RPG type games because it limits the content and storyline. So that's not important for me.

But keep on giving ideas and suggestions, as RPG games are about fantasy, and everyone's fantasies are different.

In that case, simply emulating the battle type of FF7 in a multiplayer aspect would be great fun. However, implementation is the key. For example, what items do I have when I enter the server? In FF7 your items are the result of hours upon hours worth of playing. However, internet game sessions rarely last more then an hour.

Would information about each client be stored in the server, so that he could come back and get more items? Would players be able to ban together, and fight each other? How would you deal with very high level players attacking lower level players? If you work out details such as this, it'll make the mod grrrreat.
