I am looking at buying a new computer for my gaming needs. I haven't bought a gaming computer since back in 2004/5 and that one is long since dead. I don't like spending outrageous amounts of money so I am looking for a cheap one in the 600$ and under range. I found this computer on newegg and was wondering what kind of performance I could expect on newer games like Crysis or Unreal Engine 3 games.

I am looking for something that can get me a playable frame rate on medium to high settings, thats all. Can I come by better in my price range? I would be willing to do some building... I dont know about completely from scratch though. Well, any help would be appreciated.

Are you able to salvage parts from your current PC? If so, you could build a much better computer than that one. There are loads of guides to building custom PCs on the internet. And if you have questions, a lot of us here have built our own PCs and would be able to help you.

Assuming you can keep things like your computer's case, hard drive, disk drive, etc. I put together the following for 650

GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3R
Intel Q6600 2.4GHz
Geforce 260GTX 896mb
4GB G-Skill DDR2 1066 RAM
Corsair 550W Powersupply

And theres 65 dollars in mail in rebates, so ultimately it costs less than 600 bucks, plus the shipping is probably a lot cheaper. And they're all from well known, very reliable brands.

As for that computer, it could probably run crysis reasonably on low-medium settings. The Geforce 9500 is a pretty weak card. You can buy them for under 70 bucks :/

get an HP PC if you don't want to build one, they're good for gaming and don't cost a shitload

Not really. That computer he posted is better than an equivalent $600 HP.

So would I be able to fit all that in this case?

Yes I know terrible computer. But I've been gaming on my 360 for a while now. As for salvaging the disk and drives I could do that but I would rather get a new hard drive. I liked the sound of the 500gb. I looked it up and I've seen that the Q8200 and the Q6600 get similar performance, is there any reason why you would recommend the 6600? Because that would cut a little cost right there.

EDIT: Did some research and I have come up with my own version of your computer Krynn. I'm not sure how well these parts would work together though. If they do work then I could have enough left over for my hard drive maybe so I don't have to salvage? Anyways...

And oh yeah, I dont think I have a cd for my operating system so thats another thing.....

That all looks good. Those parts should all work just fine together. I only recommended the Q6600 because I have it and its great, while I've never used the 8200.

However, your case looks like it is laid out very strangely. Its hard to say if all that would fit in there, especially since that video card is pretty large. Frankly, I wouldnt trust it to hold it all. And a 500 gig hard drive isnt terribly bigger than your 320. If you're just going to be installing games and apps, and not storing large video files, then I dont think its worth the price. Plus, its something you can easily buy later if you do find yourself running out of space, and drives will probably be cheaper by then.

So I take it an operating system is going to run me about 100 bucks no matter what I do, right? Hmmm any reason why this power supply shouldn't be used in replacement of the 550W one? And what gives you the idea that it wont all fit... too vertically cramped or width wise?

Okay I finally got everything squared around and I ordered all my parts and they should be here soon. BUT I am wondering about using my old hard drive. How do I need to go about this? Should I just plop it in the new one? Or should reformatting it take place before this?

Sorry about the double post...needed to bump it.

You don't need a 550W PSU fqwklrjkqlwjrkqlwrjklajsgklawjtklwet I wish that myth would die in a fire.

Um, you agree with me but then post a 700W PSU? :l

All you will ever need.

PSUs aren't (really) about output, they're about reliability. You chose well with the Corsair, but you could have saved some money.

Just because I agree with you doesn't mean I have to downgrade my post. Yeh I have a 700w psu because Im running a card which requires 600w or greater. All Im saying is, for what he has thats fine.

But you said you'd recommend it for him...

"I should recommend this ocz psu."

I was recommending it in general. You obviously didn't read the first part of my sentence where i say, "I know you already bought one." It wasn't directly pointed to him. I should have clarified more though. And what is it? I sense a bad vibe from you...

Hold up... if you've got a Dell, they don't always use standard motherboard sizes, so it's likely that you'll need to buy a new case. Maybe don't buy it the same time as everything else because they might've started using standard stuff in the last couple years, but be prepared if it doesn't fit.

Don't worry I already figured that out it was a micro-atx so I got a new atx case, I have all the supplies and almost none of them are what I had before. But I am certain they will work together. SO, can anyone answer my question of how to go about using my old hard drive? SHould I reformat it before putting it in the new one, or should I just plop it in?

You cannot just "plop in" a hard drive after you change all of your PC's hardware. Reformat the drive and reinstall the OS and then install all the new drivers for your hardware.

Well I figured that but can I reformat it in the new shell or do I HAVE to do it beforehand?

You don't necessarily have to reformat, I've just plopped a HDD in after changing from intel to amd as well as most other pieces of hardware and it worked fine. Just make sure you uninstall all the old drivers.

It's not guaranteed to work, but if you would rather not spend the time reformatting/reinstalling everything it's worth a shot. If it doesn't work, then off to reformatting it is.

I would say you are lucky. It's worth a try but I never got that lucky.

A reformat can be done in the new chassis. Just boot from the windows installation cd.

Okay the computer is all up and running...sort of... It won't boot up my windows ME disk (Lame I know but its how I have to do it, ME to XP to Vista). I cant figure out why it wont boot, it keeps talking about the cd-rom driver...but if that were the case how would I get it?

EDIT: forget this post was ever here...have it working now...installing crysis as I type. YES! =)
