I'm in the market for purchasing a car to get started. This would be my first car that I'll actually be paying off and can call my own, and since I'm not inherently wealthy I can't get something expensive.

I'm in the US, so I'm looking at American Domestic or Asian Import. Right now I'm leaning towards a Hyundai Tiburon, I know about the quality issues and budget-mindedness of Hyundais. The company seems to have greatly increased in quality since 04' though, it's in news stories how greatly their quality marks went up the past two or three years.

I think the 06' Hyundai's body looks sweet, the engine power's modest to say the most, compared to others (170hp on V6/140hp on inline 4) in its class. It can get up and go reasonably well for any driving I'm gonna be doing. I'm not gonna be street racing this thing, I want it to look and sound nice not go fast and use nitrous and be all riced up.

Main complaints I hear about it is that the ride's a bit too rough on rough roads and the power's poor for its class. I don't really drive on any rough roads and the power issue's not too big for me. The warranty though, that's awesome and I test drove one and the interiors comfy for me, it seems fine as long as you're not some fat ass or riding bitch in the back. I just looked at the back and felt cramped.

The dealership where I'd get the best deal is like a mile away from me too, so it'll be no problem getting it serviced for warranty work, although I hope that's not often. The price is reasonably within my range to get something nice, around 18-19k.

Here're the cars I'll be looking at http://www.edmunds.com/apps/vdpcontainers/do/ViewTypeModels/category=type/attribute=coupe/category2=pricerange/attribute2=15k25k.

Now I'm leaning towards a Tib. I think the 06' model Hyundai's are the begining of something new for Hyundai and its reputation on quality and service. Standard features are quite nice too. Nothing's final yet of course.

Anyone with recent Hyundai experience, especially the Tib? Hyundai experiences from years ago'll probably be poor from what I've seen. So what do you guys think here in the 18k-24k range? I still want money to upgrade my comp in the coming years too.

If you think 170bhp is poor power, then well you'd die if you had to drive my mums 92bhp mercedes. It doesn't accelerate like a Veyron, but it doesn't have too.

I spose you want an automatic? :D

Blatantly copying my thread:P
On topic tho, I have no idea what cars are available in the USA. The two times i've been there ive never seen a Mercedes for example, and over here everyone loves them.
Cysler Crossfire softtop? Top Gear liked it

I'm actually looking into buying a tiburon as well. Any chance you could link me to these news stories about the quality getting better? I've also heard bad things about hyundais before but I think they'd have to be decent for them to offer a 10 year warrenty.

a 2006? I have trouble affording a 1996!

;(

I basically just googled Hyundai and Quality. Notice they're all from 04' and now it is 06' and continued searching shows that they're still going in the right direction according to reviews. The HP isn't real competitive when ranked against others in its class. Still its aesthetics and interior are just as nice if not nicer depending on your tastes. The warranty and price are the real selling points past the looks, not power. Still if you're not a wannabe street racer it should be just fine I think.

Stay away from Mazdas and american cars they all suck. Go for a nissan toyota and cars that offer ten year 100,000 mile warrantys those are the cars that are built to last and you wont find yourself paying for high high costed maintence on stuff that shouldnt be breaking

People like you who have thoughts like these are the single reason America's job situation is so shitty.

yes because one 16 year old's idea is that powerful and prevalent in america. seriously if you just buy a car cus it looks nice or if you just want one youre screwing yourself over in the long run; youll just have to pay more and more each time for service money that could be going elsewhere GAS GAS

also look at the outsourcing jobs
the 12.8 million illegal immigrants working at walmart
and people who dont want to get education to specialize in their field
thats why americas job situation is shitty

car sales have been on a decline anyway

oh ya hybrids are nice
stay waya from suvs at all cost

Wrong, very wrong. How about you own a car first and see what happens when things break EVEN under warranty, and get back to me.

To bad the current hybrids are just a waste of money and don't save you all that much in gas seeing as you generally pay more for that special edition rather than going with a normal edition of the car way cheaper.

ya obviously the opinions in this thread are going to differ as in any other thread about what kind of car to buy/get, anyways you didnt really contribute towards his question. but final say, i say get the Hyundai

Stay away from volkswagen, i love them, i even drive them, but they are totally unreliable and expensive to maintain.

Maybe this can help you out:

reliability.gif

You want something reliable - buy Japanese
You want something prestigious - buy German
You want something sporty - buy European
You want something crap - buy American

Sorry, but I've owned more than a few cars and I wouldn't touch an American car with a bargepole. They're bloody awful.

In the 80's they were, but quality has, and continues to, improve. Maybe you should quit jerking it to my avatar and read the above post. 7 of the 13 above average quality brands are American. Mercury is close behind Toyota and above Honda.
Buick, Lincoln, and Cadillac score better than Toyota, Honda, and Nissan.

You, sir, are ignorant. :dozey:

2006 Honda Civic EX
or
2006 Acura RSX

Cheap, Reliable, Kinda fast (seriously how many times do you NEED a fast car for a daily driver)
and most of all FUN to drive.

Riiiiigggghht. A 2006 Coupe. First car. Paying it off. I didn't know McDonalds payed that well.

Firstly I must say that I enjoy HL2.net for the help and info on HL2 the game. That part of this site is great, and my following comments don't relate to that side of it at all, or are they intended to flame or troll, but tell merely tell the truth. I have found that most people that post here seem to be opinionated 15-year-old dreamers. So, either you are one of them trying to sound cool by posting about a car you will never be able to afford, and possibly aren't even old enough to have a license, or you are asking for advice on buying a new car from 15-year-olds whose only experience with cars is having mummy or daddy drive them to school. Either way, it's kinda sad.

Just telling it like it is.

Just telling it as YOU percieve it. Your comments are brash.

Most.

There are plenty of older teenagers on here, and even a few into the twenties. However, very few people here really know anything about cars. Of course everybody thinks they do, between magazines, TV, and the internet it's certainly easy to sound like you know what you're talking about. I'd be interested to know how many people here have any actual car experience. The kind involving your car, not your dad's Mercedes, or your uncle's auto-x z06, or you buddy's svt focus.

I have experience with a Ford Aerostar minivan. that's all I lay claim to.

Lol- I'm a freaky guy. Yep- Maybey he got found out, or realised how pointless a question like that is on a forum like this.

personally I'd stay away from a hyundai ..also wouldnt touch american cars either (not in your price range) ..I'd get a japanese car like acura, subaru, honda, toyota ...Subarus have a very good mid range car:

http://www.subaru.com/shop/configurator/step1.jsp?model=IMPREZA&year=2006

mitsubishi engine, all wheel drive, qaulity built (I have the forester, best car I've ever owned)

if you can afford the extra $5000 get the subaru WRX ..fast

lol@OVa

^ the only logical choice.

Or if we're being serious for a moment then I would suggest something japanese. Like a subaru or mitsibushi. Or if I were allowed to disregard all criteria then I'd say a daihatsu fourtrack - they never, ever die. But they dont make 'em anymore and they're most certainly not a coupe

While I know they're dependable, I wouldn't get caught in the Station Wagon, tbh. The only use are for soccer moms (rare since they use vans now) and the demolition derby. :P

Ignore the estate (or whatever you yanks call them) and go for the saloon, or better yet, get an old school scooby before they ruined it and Colin Mcraye was still driving for them in the WRC. No offence to anyone whos got one now, but the new ones are fugly as hell!

once you realise that sports cars are completely useless as anything but an ego boost you'll ditch the sports car and get something that is functional ..wouldnt be able to get 2 baby chairs and a 72 pound dog into a sports car ..not too mention going grocery shopping, buying furnature, going out with friends, driving in bad weather etc ...most people cant afford 2 cars on their own ..it'd be nice to drive a sporty car but it's just impractical 80% of the time

I never said anything about sports cars. Sure, they're nice looking, but, as you said, they're not functional for family use. I personally like SUVs.

What kind of survey was this? I have owned my fair share of cars, I know a thing or two about them.

suv's (for the most part) are gas guzzleing monstrosity death traps

....that said, I drive an suv :)

Page 1, my post had the survey on it.

Sports cars do more than an ego boost. They are a blast to drive, it's like video games, they don't do anything but entertain.

SUVS are awful; they are a waste of everything. An SUV doesn't do ANYTHING well.

A pickup tows more, a minivan holds more stuff, a hummer/jeep has better off road capabilities, a mercedes/bmw has a nicer ride, a lexus has a better sound system, a maxima is quicker, a porsche stops better, any car will out handle it, and 70% of the production cars will get better mpg. There's no reason to buy one other than ignorance. I hate everybody who owns an SUV and I hate everything suv owners associate themselves with.

yes because that's exactly like saying anyone who drives a pick up truck is a redneck

Uh...no it's not. That's stereotyping, mine is fact.

Show me any SUV and tell me why you bought it, and I’ll show you a vehicle that does that thing better. People figure, well if I buy a large enough vehicle then when I wreck I’ll only kill the other person but I’ll be ok.

SUVS don't sell because they're functional, they sell because they are marketed as the vehicle that does everything and people think they're cool when they drive one.

SUVS try so hard to do everything well, they end up doing everything mediocre.

edit: and i'm not sure where you live, but i've been in alabama all my life, and i can tell you that 85% of the people who drive pick up trucks, either are, or want to be, rednecks. Come to the university of alabama, and you'll see 14,000 lifted z71's with white guys wearing jeans, boots, and cowboy hates driving around blasting freebird/sweet home alabama, even though their parents make six figure incomes live in a 5,000 sq/ft house, and drive mercedes.

edit #2: I don't want to delete what i posted, but i don't want to start an argument over this.

Thats not an SUV! Thats a subau forester! And thats not an SUV. An SUV is either something like a Range Rover (read: a land rover with refinement, ie it actually works off road) or something like a BMW X-5 (A steaming pile of soft roader ****). The Forester does not fall into this catagory. It's a refined rally car.
