Can Source decrease the graphics to the level of Half-life ? :upstare: because performance is better than quality..:p There are a lot of people who can't afford a new machine.

I'm running on :
P4 2.0ghz
512mb ram
geforce 4mx 64mb *cough*(going to buy a new graphics card soon)

What were the min. specs for HL2 ? :smoking:

Source can pretty much be reduced to the graphics quality of Half-Life, yes. Source is incredibly scalable, so I imagine you can get good performance so long as you meet the minimum requirements (which were about a 1Ghz, 256mb RAM and a DX7 Video Card).

Yes, Half-Life 2 will be able to run on your system with scaled down graphics. I'm going to have to have baddish graphics myself.

I'm rather impressed with myself for not replying sarcastically.

I was wondering if my "old" Radeon 9500 Pro would still be able to handle HL2. Any one who knows something about good performance?? I'm very corious about this.

Quit impresseive that Source can do this.

I'm pretty sure the Radeon 9500 Pro will get better performance then my Voodoo3 2000.

;(

Well, it'll be able to handle Half-Life 2, but I wouldn't expect to run it on a resolution above 1024*768 and with high details.

MX cards doen't support pixel shading do they? /me runs off to rob a bank

Good system, asside from your card. Grab a Radeon and you're sorted.

Stop this speculation, I start scare about how Gf4 Ti 4800SE 64 will handle HL2 graphics ;(

for the record, rules when getting a gfx card:

NVidia:
if it has MX in the name, half the number of the name for the actual card. (GeForce 4mx = GeForce 2)

ATI:
if it has "SE" or Second Edition in the name, half proformance over the Pro edition.
if it is just a "Non Pro" it's an underclocked Pro card, check the kind of ram it has and find the right Pro version bios and get a Pro card for half the price!

Half-Life 2 will run on any video card DirectX 6 compliant or better (up to and including the latest generation of DX9 hardware). Of course, it'll look like a DirectX 6 game on low-end hardware, but it will run and quite well in fact. I believe Valve has stated that the minimum CPU specs will be around 1GHz.

upgrade your video card and get some more RAM
you'll be set

If you read the PC Zone article (look news) of the interveiw with Gabe N. You find that they ask about system specs, and Gabe (or Rick) answres that Radeon 9600, 9600XT, and up the ladder. to 9800 series will handle the HL2, but of course the fastest gives more eye candy :p

Now I exspect my 9500 Pro to work out OK because the defirense between 9500 Pro and 9600 isn't great... But I have to upgrade the rest of machine anyway...

Well SE doesn't mean its HALF the power of the pro. Like a 9800 SE is a better buying choice than a 9600 Pro, because you still get the 9800 Core, and if you wanted to you could pretty easly soft mod it to a 9800, or maybe a 9800 Pro. But even without the soft mod, it'll still probably do ya better. I think i read somewhere that with the SE you're really only losing 10%-20% of the power of the pro version.

Now on MX, who knows. Also the 9500 Pro is still a great card. A lot of people swear by it over the 9600 pro, something about more open pipelines or something, from what i've read you can easly pop it up to a 9700 Pro in all respects.

When it comes to nVidia, stay away from the MX cards. The Geforce 2 MX was the last good card under that moniker (it was also the first nVidia card to carry the MX designation). Any of the latest FX cards are a good buy. I bought a GeForce FX 5700 Ultra a few months back for less than $200 and it gives me great performance.

/me gags

I have a friend who is a total Nvidia fanboy but he even knows the FX is a terrible buy (considering DX9/shader intensive games).
Although he is relishing in the 6800's performance, as is expected. hehe

I'm a big Radeon fan, but man, the 6800 is one beautiful card.
Aye
Nothing like those FX cards.
