Lupe Fiasco (listen here!)

[Ennui]

If you've never heard of Lupe Fiasco and like hip-hop, prepare to be happy. I'm not sure how to describe his style, but he's pretty fresh, Muslim (so he doesn't rap about normal gangsta shit, he makes fun of it / criticizes it a lot), and he loves videogames.

Already, he's quite skilled lyrically. His delivery is great, and listening to him rhyme is entertaining, but his voice bugs me. But he's extremely young, so that will change.

Seems like he's getting ready to blow up. He's got like 15 years ahead before he fades. He'll probably be a top name by then. The video to Daydreamin' was fairly interesting.

So, to sum up. Not really into it, but I know there will be some huge hits coming, and I'll be keeping an open mind.

He's awesome. However, when he had a show at my friend's university he came on half an hour late, performed for 15 minutes, then walked off for good. Kinda colors my opinion of him...


Still, an awesome rapper.

I hear he's not that great live as well, I have friends that saw him around here and they said he wasn't that into it.

His next album is purportedly his last (LupEnd)

Unfortunately I had this song stuck in my head for about two weeks, really catchy, it's very annoying, but a somewhat guilty pleasure.

I like Lupe but he always makes me think me of greater artists. Maybe because Lupe is like the in-between dude, the almost-there dude. I mean he has uses good concepts for his songs but sometimes his use of imagery just isn't on par as others that share the same style.

For example Little Weapon is the POV of little ones who get influenced by guns and violence. It's similar to "I gave you power" by Nas but instead I gave you power POV is from the gun itself. I can't help but to point out that Lupe gets influence from Nas also and everytime I hear Little Weapon I just think back to maybe this dude took Nas concept and added new school meaning. Maybe it's just nas has more wisdom and experience... so has a more thorough way of describing the reality.

He does remind me of Nas a bit, and that is definitely a good thing.
