M Rating and Mods.

but what i am saying is basically. is there a way for people who cant/dont want/whatever to play an M rated game make/use t-rated mods?

The rating system is a token of good faith from game makers to the community but not anything that can be enforced by law.

There are some stores that do check id for M rated games, but that is just store policy.

Um...mods dont get rated bro. They are free and not published in the status quoe. And usually there aren't any mods that take an M game to T. lol it usually goes higher (M to AO)

how depressing.. my parents are uber-strict and don't allow m-rated games. but im quite good at modding.. its depressing i can't mod HL2.

You know, (this is debatable) but violence in games DOES NOT necessarily lead to violence in kids or school shootings. It can, but most kids (you would be suprised) can tell the difference. Most kids like those columbine shooters did it because they were really messed up in the head, not just because they played too much doom. People picked on them. They were obsessed with nazis. Video games by themselves usually don't do that. If a kid sees a porno flick, does he go around raping his classmates?
Notice how the media doesn't say the "good" or "boring" things?

12 year old kid plays half-life and nothing happens! Kid learns better reflex skills, and hand-eye coordination.
Now maybe I'm being stupid here but you get the picture. Good news is boring, so people think the whole world is messed up and violent games are to blame.

M is usually fine, unless you take it too far or can't tell reality apart from video games. Damn stores! I don't trust you random customer with my copy of Half-Life 2.

here the local EB is sorta strict with purchases of M rated games.. that is why i see parents in the store with their kids so much.
in my previous neighbourhood the EB was not as strict.. i noticed kids (u could clearly tell they were nowhere near the age of 17 ) easily purchasing M rated games.

it does largely depend on how the store manager runs the store and its policies.

I was 17, and I was carded for buying a Gameboy at Target. I kid you not.

I seriously had to talk to guy behind the counter and convince him to put in a fake birthday in the system. I mean, it's a freaking Gameboy!

wow thats a little over the top. But then again, Target makes you give them a birthday for everything thats R, M, AO and all that crap. Thats why I refuse to buy games from them. I'd much rather go to the EB that just a little ways down in the complex. (im 17)

You'd run into a few snags as far as "official" stuff is concerned.

For example, were Valve to hold a modding competition, a HL2 tournament or something like that, officially sponsored by them, you wouldn't be allowed to enter unless you're 18+.

Other companies have done the same, I don't doubt Valve would either.

I'm not sure what the assistants in the US are like, but when Carmageddon came out here (about 7 years ago) it was rated 18. I went and bought it even though I blatently wasn't old enough, it seemed that where games were concerned shop owenrs didn't tkae the ratings seriously, that it if they knew of their existance.

I live in the us and I saw someone get turned down for buying grand theft.. I think it was at eb.
