Governor Baldacci just signed LD1020 into law an hour ago, meaning that same-sex couples will have the right to marriage! I'm so proud to be a Mainer right now!

I have quite a few gay friends who have openly expressed to me how important this essential right is, so I'm happy that all my gay friends will have the same rights as me and everyone else.

...

It isn't over yet though. The opposition is working on a people's veto for people to vote on in November, but we won't let this become another Prop 8! NO WAIII

i'm still waiting on them to make having sex with a moose legal...we are allowed to shoot them but giving a giant animal sexual pleasure is wrong...what a world we live in.

america is slowly turning into a nation of gay ........supporters.

it's about time you joined the rest of us ...you know, you could have gotten here a lot faster if you just killed the religious nutjobs

Told you guys the storm was coming!

funny how opponents are saying it'll be overturned if and when they get 50,000 signatures and it's put to a vote. You dont vote on human rights, there's too many idiots out there to expect the public to do the right thing ..as the comments illustrate so well

You'd be surprised. Two years ago, there was a people's veto created to remove Maine's gay anti-discrimination laws. There was a strong network of support for this veto, but thankfully it didn't pass.

And I can't tell you guys how exciting it is to be in a state that is becoming so progressive. I've been following the Maine Marriage Equality bill since it was introduced in January and I've watched live feeds of the senate and house hearings. It's so amazing to be alive at a time like this.

exactly why you dont put Human rights to a vote; people are stupid

I still don't get what the big deal is, why do people care so much if gay people marry? Aside from the obvious same-sex part, how is their marriage any different than my parents being married?

Is it strictly a 'god hates gay marriage' thing or is there some secret gay marriage tax being taken out my salary and used to fund these weddings?

because the Sky Wizard Worship Society, also known as JesusFanboys, have a problem with people doing things they cant because oif their idiotic religion

most of the hate leveled at gays is from jealous christians ...you can quote me on that

I never understood people against gay marriage. Okay, so lets assume they go will go to hell. Lets assume they will almost defiantly get aids and do heroin.

SO WHAT? There are kids starving in Africa, and you're worried about two people marrying? What the **** is wrong with these people.

Still, good news.

Go ME.
(sorry)

Anyway, where are you from?

In times like these we need to look to progressive super-states like Maine to lead the way on the path of justice and dudes marrying dudes.

So if gays got married in Maine and moved to Texas, would they still be married? What role does the federal government have in marriage?

The Constitution requires full faith and credit between the states. A driver's license and a marriage have to count, no matter what state you're in.

I smell the Supreme Court.

Where did you get this info?

I just (barely) overheard something on the radio about this yesterday, saying it was only just passed. But I couldn't hear it very well at all, so ...

I'm not sure if each state needs to recognize it? What I'm saying is this is new. And that states must now recognize same sex marriage.

So can you confirm that?

From a Government teacher. I've been meaning to look it up.

The case could go either way of course, and presumably the outcome would apply to all states.

Edit:
Looks like they'd have to repeal this first. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Defense_of_Marriage_Act
Article IV

Section 1. Full faith and credit shall be given in each state to the public acts, records, and judicial proceedings of every other state. And the Congress may by general laws prescribe the manner in which such acts, records, and proceedings shall be proved, and the effect thereof.

Section 2. The citizens of each state shall be entitled to all privileges and immunities of citizens in the several states.
If that law isn't a totally ****ing blatant contradiction if this passage, then I'm gay for the Brawney paper towels the Constitution isn't written on.

Yep, dunno why religious Americans are so afraid of this. Gay marriage has been legal here in Canada for a few years now and my life hasn't changed in any way what so ever.

LAWL.

I predict that in 20 years, polygamy will be legal. In every shape and form.... 5 gay woman all married to each other, one man + three wives, 2 woman + 3 guys married and it will be known as a "partnership-style marriage". The argument of course will be that they are all adults and as long as they LOVE each other ~ who is it to say that their marriages aren't acceptable?? I'm sure they will have feelings for each other and besides, they were taught as KIDS in this generation that marriage is just open to any variation of consenting adults. The argument will become.....once again..... Who is to deny them of their "rights" to visit their love in the hospital??

Just imagine how wealthy they will be too! 3, 4 or 5 incomes under one household! Plenty of wealth to push their lifestyle on the elected officials...

From my perspective, marriage between one man and one woman is at risk of becoming passe. When did it begin? Probably around the time of the woman's movement. Keeping up with the Jones might have had a back seat incentive for the move... but you can't deny that two incomes are leaps and bounds more attractive than one. Don't believe me? Try buying a house and asking for a guaranteed mortgage on a single 30k income with excellent credit. You may get 80-90k if you shop around. Plenty to buy a double-wide!

Eventually, the married woman or man found someone they thought is more interesting and the result has become a 50% divorce rate.

Am I over reaching on my prediction? I am sure 20 years ago that everyone considered gay marriage to be unrealistic. 20 years prior to that, I'm sure that divorce at a 50% rate would have been unrealistic. Just following the trends folks... facts, statistics and the lack of values in elected leadership is coming ahead once again.

Teach children today through schools, tv - media... that gay marriage is acceptable and in 20 years they will grow and become the leaders to broaden the argument to allow for polygamy ~ OR ~ stop this nonsense and draw the line in the sand. One man + One Woman = marriage (Period).

Bunch of ****ing idiots.

Though to be fair to the whackjob Hannity forums, there are a fair few intelligent people on the boards, at least when it comes to issues like Gay Marriage and marijuana etc. But most of them are ****ing idiots who think anybody who disagrees with their narrow minded view of life and country are evil, communist scum.

Bunch of nonsense. I dunno why gay people even want to get married or why conservatives care soo much about marriage.

I'm never getting married. I'm just going to stay fit and healthy and **** women until I'm 60 or 70 years old.By then I won't care about sex anymore or staying healthy and i'll buy a boat and retire to New Orleans and smoke cigars and drink beer and sail into the ocean.

No wife or kids to feed. All my money for me and the government.

Seriously. As long as you keep yourself surrounded with a group of good friends you'll never feel lonely and you'll never have to worry about commitment. I just see too many fellows these days who just aren't happy being married. I'm sure there are happily married people out there. You justs have to find the ABSOLUTE perfect person for you, and that is a tall task. You may never meet that person until your 60. People these days are to quick to rush into marriage and they usually end up regretting it.

Marriage always has been, and always will be, between the two children of four consenting parents.

I mean... always has been and always will be one consenting man and one young girl with consenting parents.

I mean one consenting white man and one consenting white woman!

There, that's the ticket. Just like God intended and has been intending for the past 200 years.

Conservatives don't want government in their lives. They want less government, not more government. That's exactly the reason why they want government butting in the lives of other people to prohibit them from receiving the same rights.

Oh how ridiculous that sounds.

The other irony is that fiscal conservatives can't bring up the only logical, fact-based objection to the consequences of gay marriage- the government spending more money in tax breaks to couples.

Yeah well, if they expect to enjoy the benefits, they need to accept that other people deserve those benefits as well, equally.

you think like i do. so what if people love eachother. someone who hinder's someone else's love for someone is a real douchbag imo. imagine how much better this world would be with more love in it. Also all that time arguing about gays when they could be saving lives. (MY PC is acting strange right now, took 1 extra min to post this)

Damn straight.

I'm against marriage as a legal institution, but I this is obviously a step in the right direction.

The thing annoys me most about those forums is the smug bastard poses of that smug bastard Sean Hannity on the banner.

Yeah... lol. I thought the same thing before too.

And man I need to break my habit of getting my daily laugh and cringe by visiting those forums.
