the government would have to go through the trouble of changing every single document that contains the word "marriage" with "civil union" just to placate a minority of the population.

I don't think it really affects the argument, but just FYI, in Britain the government simply published a list of Acts of Parliament in which the meaning of "marriage" was to be interpreted by judges as encompassing civil partnerships. Easy as that.

yes it's the umbrella term to mean several things just as it is in canada. this is the sticking point most anti-same sex marriage proponents argue against. "it's adam and eve, not adam and steve"
