Mr. Winters, who separated from the Army at the rank of major, and his men fought together through D-Day and the Battle of the Bulge and later occupied Adolf Hitler's mountainside retreat, the Eagle's Nest, near Berchtesgaden.

A charismatic officer who led by example, Mr. Winters received the Distinguished Service Cross, the country's second highest decoration for valor, while conducting combat operations on D-Day.

Battle of the Bulge. huehuehuehue

God damn man, I remember this dude by name alone and that's pretty rare. I saw Band of Brothers not too long ago, damn fine miniseries.

I wouldn't of known who Dick Winters would of been if not for his portrayal in BoB

I just thought about him the other day. Rest in peace, Dick.

What a tragedy. RIP you bloody hero =(

Live by the sword die by the, er, old age.

RIP. Glad his story and that of the other men was able to be told in such an amazing way and they got to see it.

If I recall correctly, that first video where he states he was amongst a company of heroes was the last veteran interview in the series. I remember absolutely choking up after that, it murdered me.

His passing is indeed sad. I'm glad that though, like Raziaar said, he and others were honored in their lifetime.

EDIT: God damn it's making me teary even now.

Salute. Rest in peace Winters. You were one of the most truly badass American Bad Asses ever.

Seriously, this makes me sad :( I love Band of Brothers and I've always had extreme respect for Winters ever since I first read the book.

Has anybody read his memoir that came out a couple of years ago? I read a lot of positive comments about that book today. I have been meaning to buy it, but I never got around to it.

I never knew he wrote a memoir, but I'd certainly like to read it now that I've heard of it. I imagine it's going to sell a ****ton of copies too, people seem to be reacting very strongly to this because of his role in Band of Brothers. There is a 2000-upvote frontpage link on reddit about it.

You're right. I saw someone say Sunday and assumed it was yesterday. Can a mod change the title so it doesn't say yesterday?

Done!

I was thinking about this the whole time I was in class today. I have loads of respect and admiration for Winters and the rest of Easy Company, but what really makes me tear up about this is my gratitude. Especially from such a humble man as Winters, who pretty much attempted to deflect all praise that came his way and give it to Easy Co instead. Without men like him and their heroism and selflessness and courage, the world would be a very different - and much worse - place today. Rest in peace, but most importantly: THANK YOU.

Ennui couldn't have said it any better. I agree.

RIP. And thanks.

Why does everyone like this guy so much if he was a major dick?

Beyond Band of Brothers: The war memoirs of Major Dick Winters (That is Richard to you, ZT). I'll prolly get this when I go on holiday in two weeks.

Btw you might also like this book. The dude who wrote it reminded me about Winters in a lot of ways. He is Lt. Fick from Generation Kill.

Winters was a legend, on the BBC article on his passing someone commented saying that Winters and the other men from Easy involved in storming the German artillery site on D-Day should be awarded Medal of Honours. I would fully support that.

In the interviews with all of the men from Easy on each episode they just have such a great bond.

Rest in Peace.

absolutely this. gets me everytime and i watch that show a lot. like, a lot. i never tire of it, the only show i find comparable with it's attention to detail and fantastic portrayal of characters is the wire.

bit late to this, but saw it on facebook the other day and that isn't really much of a place to say it. i know this is still only just virtual space but, still... rest in peace.

:(

I like to think that, in the afterlife, the posthumous harbour a great appreciation for tasteless and terrible jokes at their expense.

Without this man in my life, it will truly be a dick winter this season.

I'm trying to make a funny link between bulge (battle of) and dick but can't think of one.

What a life dick. Amazing he survived all that.
