major lag when starting a server

getting huge amounts of lag when i attempt to make a server for lan or bots or whatever. not lag as in ping, but major spikes, some that last for a good 10 seconds or so. the screen just freezes, and im unable to move or do anything until it kicks back in.

My comp runs source ok and i can join multiplayer games no worries but as soon as i start a server it completly dies. This has been happening before the recent update so the bots arent causing it.

any suggestions would be most helpful.

Actually, I don't have a sugestion. I asked that question because that does happen to me, but not just in starting. My game freezes and the screen shakes back and forth violenty. I know it's not my system that's causing the problem... it just leaves me vulnerable for 10-12sec.
