Greetings and salutations to all my musical co-posters. I'm about to begin the process of making a new demo reel and I just can't find the right music for what I have in mind. I've lurked for awhile in the "post your latest tracks" thread and ive heard a lot of nice tracks, so i figured I'd requisition one for myself :D. I have no clue how to begin describing the style of music Ive got in my head, so I'll just post some examples, and if you think you can make a similar sound and work with me let me know. The track would need to be ~ 2 minutes or less, since my demo reel will be around that length. It needs to have no vocals (like lyrics, it can have sounds made by people, so long as its not actually singing. I dont know how to explain it, so I'll find an example). How long you have to work on it depends on how quickly I get my new assets done, but I imagine it will be 1-2 months, so i'm hoping thats plenty of time.

Be warned that you will have to actually work with me though. The music will be a big inspiration for the entire feel of my reel, so it will have a huge impact. Also I need some rather specific, "beats" I guess, that put emphasis on things happening in the video, so there will probably be a good deal of tweaking. I'm not going to be super picky though, because I can edit my camera cuts and timing easily enough. You can get an idea of what kind of tempo will be needed with the example demo reels below.

As for pay, I dont really know how much one would charge for this sort of thing, so I guess I'll be taking offers. Keep in mind that im just a guy with a christmas hat wearing dog as my avatar, so I'm not made of money. I will only be using the track for this very specific purpose, and beyond that it will be entirely yours to do with as you will. And like I said, two minutes long or less. So if you're interested you can post some examples of stuff you've done and how much you'd charge for it. You can either post here or PM me if you'd rather not do it publicly.

I was also thinking of maybe just doing an informal "contest" where I just put up a price and anyone who wants to throw a track at it, can, and whosever is closest to what I need will "win" the chance to tweak it and then get paid. But if thats a stupid idea then we'll forget I ever mentioned it.

Also, soon I will be making a "blocked out" version of the reel so I can get camera moves and work on the actual presentation of the reel at the same time as I am making the assets. This will probably help with making the music, since you'd be able to sort of see what the music will be going to. However I wont be able to start working on that until probably a week or two from now because I'm going to be moving again next week.

Now for examples:

First off, my old student demo reel, just so you know sort of what I'll be doing. My new one is going to be a lot better, but thats obvious and besides the point. You can check it out on my website here: http://www.3DMaloney.com (Flash is needed)

This next example is a important one. For one, its another demo reel, but it has similar camera moves that I am planning on using, and has a very nice track to go with it. I'd say that this is probably what you should take the most influence from.

I also absolutely love the track in this guys reel:

And now, I'll just post songs that I like:

I like how distinct sounding this one is, but its a little slow.

I like how this next one starts up. The way its broken up seems like it could go nicely with a similarly choppy looking intro title sequence. Its also got an example of what I talked about earlier, about having vocals without actual singing of lyrics.

I also like the Ghost Recon (original) theme. Its got a nice "epic" feel.

I also like way the song Set Fire to Me starts off. It should be in the player on the right:

Just for more reference, heres some more awesome demo reels with music that I think really goes with the reels. These aren't so much for reference, but for inspiration, and just to get the "feel" of what these reels are about.

I'll probably post more if there is any interest in here. Im too tired right now to find the rest.

[Registration of interest]

I'll probably want to give this a go, it seems like a good challenge to write a piece of music with something specific in mind.

Can you link to stuff you've done before?

This probably isn't exactly the style you have in mind, but would you be interested in using a faster and rearranged version of this track? http://media.putfile.com/Half-Full-99

I'd do it for free, we can start working together right away, and you can still hold a contest and if you end up liking another track better, then you can just drop mine and go with that. I've always been interested in arranging music for a video, so this would be my pleasure.

I can edit the track any way you see fit, and perhaps add some stuff as well if you like, to closer suit the style you want, because I really enjoyed making the original to begin with and wanted to expand on it more.

Unless you specifically want a whole new track composed just for the video.

you've posted a lot of pretty different songs here so it's difficult to see what you want, but you seem to be into instrumental lounge or hip-hop vibes, or generally moody music. I can whip something up for you!

i can make electronic, ambient or more rocky stuff, pretty much anything, the more specific you are, the better.

your video is damn good by the way!

I can't get your damnation song to work, do you have it uploaded somewhere else?

Thanks. They've improved quite a bit since I've had this job. My next reel is going have 1 major scene, and then probably two or three simpler character models shown after it.

Basically the first and most important scene is going to be of two soldiers, one lying on the street wounded and grabbing the pantleg of his buddy who is standing over him and shooting at some unseen enemy off in the distance. It will look somewhat similar to this pic:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v325/turkeyslapper/idea1.jpg

So imagine the camera looking down on the street itself, moving and scrolling down the street so we see the cracks and pebbles on the road, then we see some bullet casings and etc. That will be the short intro title sequence. Then the camera will look up and we see the characters doing their thang, and the background environment being all depth-of-fielded.

The music should fit with those camera moves and the subject. Some kind of rolling, "travel" beat for the first 10-15 seconds maybe, and then when the camera looks up at the characters, a heavier beat kicks in and it keeps that going, with a few flourishes or whatever, until it comes time to cut to the next asset, where it will go quiet for a bit, and kick in again as we fade out of the black.

Hopefully moving into my new place wont take too long this week and I can start doing the previs work for it so there is something tangible to go along with this description.

I'll fix the link when I'm on my own computer.

Okay so you want a kind of black hawk down-ish rock music meets eastern vibes, atmospheric kind of stuff?
