i want to make backups for a game. but is that illegal? because i heard that it was.

Backups aren't illegal. They are only illegal if you sell them or put them up for download on the internet.

EDIT: But they are illegal if you don't own the game, for example, you lend it from a friend and copy it.
As long as you brought the game legally, you should be able to create back ups in case the disks get scratched etc...

Lol, who actually makes backups? Come on, be honest.

Generally, providing you own the game, you can make as many backups as you want _for personal use only_ By rights if you then get rid of the game, you should get rid of any backups you have.

Its legal to make backups of your game, its even legal to use no cd cracks, but its illegal to break the cd copying protection. Ao it all kinda contradicts. It is fully within your rights to make a backup of this game if you have the original in your posession

By law, you are allowed to make a backup of any thing you own, as long as the backups aren't distributed for free or for a price to other third parties. British law also states it is illegal for any company to try to backup software that a person legally owns.

Jeeeeeeeeeez, guys you have no clue what you're talking about, right?

Because as a LAWYER, I would like to remind you that each country has its own LAWS. So there's no such thing as a universal answer to this question.

I'm a French Law student, and in France article L. 122-6-1.II. of the Intellectual Property Code allows the user to make a backup copy of his video games.
