Making funcs occlude at a distance?

Is it possible to make func_details and func_illusionary's disappear at a distance?
 
It creates a "fog" which makes the engine not have to render them, or at least not their textures.

I actually don't know how good it is performancewise.
 
oh. well nevermind. that sounds pretty lame. I just remembered seeing something that faded with distance. I haven't used them. :\
