Making holes in walls

Hello,

I'm wondering what the best way to "blow" a hole in a wall. I want the corner of a building to be gone. But not a "clean" cut, I want it to be all jaggedy w/ rubble all around. I don't know how to make the hole in the wall look like it was blown out, when I try to use the displacement tool and the "Clean" cut edges...it makes the rest of that brush dissapear.

Thanks,

CD

it is best to cut the hole out yourself, like add the extrusions and intrusions yourself. for the little details so it isn't flat, just add some noise and then sew the seams together.

hmm ill have to read up on adding noise...I didn't know hammer supported that, thx...I dont know how to sew either :p

Check out Cs_Reflex map.. there is some bunkers that you can blow chunks out of. I don't know if you can see how they've done it, but maybe it will give some insight.

Chunks don't get blown out, you can shoot out the supports which causes the roof to collapse. Totally different things.

Making jaggedy stuff can REALLY get messy. It can even permanently mess up your map.

Be careful with the vertex manipulation tool.

yeah it could mess up your map - one thing you could do is take a block (part of which you want to be blown out) and then clip until there are good segments (use a new map for this)...then convert a lot of these brushes to func_breakables - run the map to see if its what you want and then paste it back to the original

Chunks get blown out of the walls of the bunkers just in front of the wall that moves up and down. Check it out.

During the explosion, you could obscure the area of wall with a cloud of smoke/dust and, with all the noise and confusion, instantly replace the wall with one of those pre-fab damage models with exposed rebar and such.

Even without the smoke sprites, it should happen fast enough that no-one could tell the difference.

Maybe throw in some modelled debris chunks too.

Edit: I just realized that you might not mean real-time. In that case, just do it the same way they did in the later levels of City 17. The destroyed walls there had pretty convincing 'jagged' edges.

Don't use BSP.

The _best_ way would be to make your own prop of a blown out wall chunk and insert it in an empty space in the side of the building.
