I don't buy it. Unless he's doped up on angel dust or something, there's no way he purposely put and held the saw to his neck until it was severed. Note: my argument here is technically flawed, but I suspect foul play.

I've heard a story of a guy sawing himself in half with a chainsaw by accident (vertically, head to toe, I believe).

It's possible, because once you get it started, the chain just sort of pulls its way through the cut. That's what I've been lead to believe anyhow.

you could easily search for sources that refutes the story ..simply saying "well I dont believe it" isnt good enough ..your word means jack without something to back it up
