An 83-year-old Indian holy man who says he has spent seven decades without food or water has astounded a team of military doctors who studied him during a two-week observation period.

Prahlad Jani spent a fortnight in a hospital in the western India state of Gujarat under constant surveillance from a team of 30 medics equipped with cameras and closed circuit television.

During the period, he neither ate nor drank and did not go to the toilet.

"We still do not know how he survives," neurologist Sudhir Shah told reporters after the end of the experiment. "It is still a mystery what kind of phenomenon this is."

The long-haired and bearded yogi was sealed in a hospital in the city of Ahmedabad in a study initiated by India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the state defence and military research institute.

In other news, the five unexplained power black outs during the man's hospital stay are still being investigated. Doctors say they technically can't prove he didn't have a quick kebab during them, but he said he didn't, and he seems super cool, so it's probably not a problem.

I had a guy preach to me at work today, it was really depressing. He said the real reason why i left church was I thought of it as a religion and not a relationship. I told him I stopped going because my god never talked back and I stopped believing in fairy tales. He pretty much stopped talking after that
 
Damn I wish Indians would move past these sadhus,yogis and swamis. I've lost faith in them ever since a lot of these guys have been arrested for conning people or sex scandals.
 
Instead of dicking around and watching the guy why not just ask to examine his mouth and stomach for traces of food proteins? OR...lock him in a room for 1 month. If he's alive when the door opens than I'm going to church on Sunday.

Heh. Pretty much the same thing happened for me at school.
 
This is an awesome story but I'd prefer some more scientific diagnosis rather than we shall watch him not eat for 2 weeks. Just for god sake find out if he has eaten in the last 70 years first!

Don't be silly...James Randi is one of the more influential people of our time, in a matter of speaking. He seemingly opened the door for homeopathic skepticism and basically devoted his life to the cause. What irritates me is that the religious right (including those who believe they have super powers) will use his sexuality against him to assault his credibility.

It takes a lot of integrity to come out so late in life when he could have simply kept his mouth shut. If I was a gay man, I would have sex with James Randi...I said it.

Heh. I never went to church, but one of the big reasons why I stopped being religious was also because I felt like it was a completely one sided conversation. I felt alone, just talking to myself, miserable... the craziness of doing that didn't fill me with an crazy man's warmth, and so I stopped. Now I can be crazy for entirely different reasons.

It's funny too, when I was young I was so afraid of abandoning my faith, I would constantly reassure myself and god that I would never abandon Christianity. And here I am today. Either Satan got his hooks into me and his plan worked, or I simply grew up. I choose the latter.
