Hi all!

First of all, this is my Virgin thread. ^_^U

Anyway, I suddenly had a stupid idea and I can't seem to find it via search. Here goes:

If you're holding something sufficiently big and heavy (or sharp) with the manipulator, and SWING it around fast enough... could you actually hit something and hurt it? (Or eviscerate, or bludgeon, or any of the wonderful things you do to kill people?)

Just a thought... dunno if Havok supports that or if it could be modded in. Comments?

Cheers,
Ran

yeh cant see why that shouldnt happen, speed and impact is part of sources physics system , which as seen seems to = how much something or someone gets hurt.

I sent the following e-mail to gabe but have had no reply as yet...

Dear Mr Newell

Good work on the game : )

I have some short connected questions:

How do the physics work underwater (i.e. do objects move slower, are chains and wire simulated realistically etc)?

Can water have flow (possible in a mod)?

Do objects held with the manipulator maintain their physical properties (i.e. Can I whack a zombie with a radiator while still holding it and will I float if I grab a large buoyant object)?

Is simulation of buoyancy in objects reliable with complex shapes/combinations of materials (i.e. contained "air bubbles" and large wooden matrixes such as wooden house frames)?

I realise these questions are asking some pretty challenging abilities for your software : )

I will not be assuaged from buying the game (wild dogs couldn't stop me) even if you answer "No, but we have a cool looking crowbar!" : D

Cheers, I cant wait for the game to be released so that you may receive the full praise you deserve.

Waiting expectantly with my cheque book open,
Nico Waller

I dont think we have a define answer on any of these questions as yet... but I ca guess that the answer is no for the last 3 :D

edit... could be done in a mod I expect quite easily. but i'm no expert :|

I can quite honestly say, they do... as most leak players will say .. :P

ask yourself.. why would they loose their physical properties?,, afterall its that which defines wheither you can pick it up or not.

you shoot the radiator or whatever you are holding it and it will kill people, i guess that colliding it with something would hurt, or maybe it would push it out of the field and it would drop it. It depends whether the object being held is held firmly or loosely.

A direct firm link would mean it was simply an extension and so a lever principal would occur (you could move the world with a long enough lever idea) so hitting people with the end would be like hitting something with a pipe, except the pipe would be really long and so the force would be quite large!

If it was loose then maybe the firld has a physical presence and so would act as a buffer, the object could be struck against things but it would either throw the object out the other side of the field like one of those office toys (the swinging balls connected together showing force being transferred) and doing no damage to the thing you hit.

Maybe worth waiting for.

they appear to lose their inertia and weight - they are floating in midair remember :D

they dont loose their mass and density though, ( in space (vaccum), objects with a large mass are obviously weightless, although they can still hurt if they somehow hit you in the face ;) ) and inertia is applied just by swinging it around, or firing it off

In that one video, Gordo uses a manipulated radiator to block bullets. So, it's pretty firmly held.

but that could be a cushion effect from the manipulator's field, can't wait for the game so all of these issues can be resolved.

The answer to the question, is OF COURSE YOU CAN DO THAT!!

Valve aren't dumb, this is one of the first things they would have noted down in the design stage.

If you held something with the manipulator and pushed it against say a matress it would push the matress. I'm quite sure Valve would atleast do that with all the power they have with Source.

I thought i was in the dark about some aspects of the game, but recently I really cant believe some people's questions :rolling: , sometimes about obvious things. Have they read about the Source engine atall? pls oh God pls, be a bit more intuitive about what you see.. if you cant, then you need to figure out a bit more carefully what havoc physics are in HL2's case.

Every object that is manipulatable can interact with anything in the world, so using Common sense and seeing how ambitious the game is, and valve. its so obvious that everythings been and being programmed to react properly , this is why we are so exited about HL2  .

Don't forget that Gordon uses a manipulated matress to push some stuff around in Traptown...

hehe. One guy asked me a similar question that "when the alien gunship hovercraft will be over wires will the move?"...and this is hl2 we are talking about with one of the most advanced physics engine...

yeh I swear some people think HL2 isnt as good as it sounds, Infact I think people are purposely bringing some questions up just inorder to start bashing HL2. I do detect resentment from some posts.. this post is fine, for a first thread question its fine :)

Can't wait to see hordes of people in death match spinning around with a saw blade or something trying to take people out.

I just hope valve doesn't get too crazy with the use of the manipulator in the game. It's a cool idea, but it seems like it's just there more to show off the physics engine than anything else.

I think you misunderstood what i meant by my post, my use of language could have probably been simplified, by using the word resolved i meant clarified, as in we could physically do these things ourselves and see whether they work or not. I am a total fan of HL2 and really look forward to it, i was in no way bashing it or questioning its quality, i was simply using a vocabulary extended beyond your ken, soz.;)

/me opens console
sensitivity 30

/me grabs something and starts the bashing :bounce:

resolved means clarified now? eh? , nm I undestand. but I think your Ken isnt part of any known vocabulary, but rather a play mate for Barbie. But its alright, Ken is pretty confused too, being plastic and all.

There is moving air in the game... Helicopters blow shit around and stuff.

Holy crap, you registered in September last year and this is your first post?! Thats impressive

Anyway, yep, as you swing heavy objects around with the manipulator and hit an object, such as a friendly, he'll be either damaged or killed.

How about finding a lose end of a wire laying on the ground with its other end attached to something (a wall, pole or similar). What if you could pick up the lose end with the man-gun and like, run around a bunch of approaching zombies and like, tie 'em up ? Then you can calmly browse the area for the coolest stuff you could use to kill those six - seven immovable foes with. :E

I read in one of the Valve e-mails that Gordon weighs 40kg or something. I wonder if it would be possible to push/injure people just by running into them.

If so, i'm going to try to kill combine in the beginning of the game when I have no weapons. I'll try to get a combine to stand in front of a window on the 3rd story of the apartment building, then run into him full speed. If he falls out and dies, i'll go down and grab his weapon :sniper:

Wow, 40kg even in a hazard suit? He must look like a golf club or something...

Gordon weighs 40kg or something

WOW, he's gonna have to walk around with an anchor chained 'round his waist so he doesn't fly away if a light breeze kicks in.

///////

How about my previous question - just a couple of posts up, would it be possible ? (I really don't wanna start another thread about that - though I'd really much like to hear what you guys think about it.)

Heh...yeah 40 seems a little light. It must have been 80 then. I remember a post where someone asked how much Gordon weighs after some other physics question and Gabe responded with Gordon's weight. I'm American and don't know kg too well..

He must be 70kgs + 70 kg of the HEV = 140 kgs.

140 kgs, damn Gordon's overweight he should stop sitting around with Gabe and bout time to shed some steel...
