I'm wondering what sort of steps an experienced mapper takes when going from conception of the map to the delivery of the map. I'm still very inexperienced in creating maps, but I really want to try to get some sort of idea on how a mapper "thinks" so that I can lay my ideas down in a map effectively.

Draw a plan with basic geometry first. Then details. Then items and NPCs. Finally add events.

Then make it and on the final step add light just as you want it.

What I do:
1. Think of a good setting or place you want your map to take place.
2. Start thinking of ideas of how you could make this place come alive just using what your limited to in the source engine. Be creative and think of a new ideas.
3. Start making the basics of your map.
4. Fix all bugs and problems.
5. Add Detail.
6. Fix new bugs.
7. Add finishing touches and finishing details.
8. Fix last minute bugs.
9. Send out Beta.
10. Get feedback and think of ways to imrpove.
11. Add new improvements.
12. Fix ALL the bugs.
13. Compile and spread on forums and websites.

The main things I try to think about are;

What area to make?
How to border that area? natural or human caused?
What paths the players should be able to take?

Then;

Draw some basics ideas and construct them in hammer.

Get a feel for how your map works and how it could work better.

Implement any new ideas during the course of your project.

Test with a few close mates and get some alpha feedback.

Implement/fix anything your peers have told you.

Have discussions with other as to how to go about anything you don't
know how to do.

Finish your alpha and test for bugs.

Fix any bugs.

Add detail. Textures, rocks, furniture, windows, boxes etc

Make sure all the detail works in the map.

Do another detail pass for areas that look 'Barren'

Once your happy release a beta to the public.

Take any major problems/ideas and implement them as best you can to suit the crowd.

Release you final build. Best compile options and bug free.

Something that has not been mentioned: do some researches on the internet. If you are making a map based on a cathedral for examples, go on google and look for pictures of cathedrals. This way you'll get more ideas and you'll think about alot of stuff you could add and wouldn't have tought before. It will also help you to use good looking textures that are truly related to the theme you want. Cathedrals are not usualy made of bricks, even if the texture looks cool in the texture browser, look at the real pictures to find the one that matches best with the theme.

Even though I din't start this thread I found it very helpfile.
Ecspeically you Ti, going and find pics on a catherdral thats a nice idea.
