Mario Galaxy 2 hype thread (with Edge review)

I love that it sounds like there's actually some difficult parts in it this time around. Everything, even the purple coin challenges, was pretty simple in SMG1.

Can't wait. I'm putting down all my other games when I get a hold of this until I 100% it.

I liked how they had the 64 type-esque level selection in SMG1 (you know.. how there were different rooms and a pretty cool place to explore and run about). Why'd they take this general theme away in SMG2? It's like Super Mario Bros now.

I might give it a rent. Probably not though.

I got this game a couple days early and have gotten 30 stars so far. I don't know if it's a 10 but I think it definately deserves all of the pre-release praise its getting. Right now I'd give it a 9.5 because of miner issues with the level pacing of the game, besides that it's pretty much perfect. Everything you want from a SMG sequel and then some.

On the contrary, I didn't think SMG1 had enough of that 64 type-esque level selection.

Wii games get better reviews simply because they are for wii = fact

Or, reviewers modulate their graphics scores based on the capabilities of the platform the game is on.

Plus, say what you will about the poly counts, SMG has a great visual style.

Well, what I like about IGN(and a lot of other reviewers), they don't just rate the graphics by how games look technically, but they look at how games reach their goal.
Nintendo's goal wasn't to create the most realistic environments with dynamic shadows, complex shader effects and that kind of stuff, they wanted to create a game that looked like a appealing platformer with colorful graphics, and they did that perfectly.

That's true, but wonder what they could have created if they didn't re-use the gamecube hardware? I for one don't think it deserves a perfect 10 because the controls drive me insane. There are certain games that I love using the simple motion controller on but this is not one of them. I'm forced to play standing up (because the sensor doesn't work when your low to the ground) with my arms a foot in front of me. You get tired just after a little while of playing. You might be able to use a GC controller, but I don't know. I'm not going to spend more money on accessories since I bought two "motion plus" addons for $60 which seemingly do nothing but are required for some games.

Why should the score be reduced because you have a weird playing posture? I'm sure most people play like me: sitting on the sofa, Wiimote pointed at screen, perfectly comfortable. And what do you mean the sensor doesn't work when you're low to the ground? Do you play sitting on the floor?

Just take some distance from your desk(if you have the space) and make sure you put the sensor bar on top of your screen and set it that way in your Wii settings. Also, collecting star bits usually isn't necessary so you don't need to point at the screen all the time.

(assuming you play on a desk, I don't see how one would get trouble when playing on a couch+TV)

That's odd. There's no way you should need to stand up and have your arm stretched out. I play sitting in a bean bag with my wiimote arm resting at the side.

Looking forward to picking this one up....too many games to play through and I can't decide which ones to play!

Bullshit.

The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass got 10/10 for graphics for the DS.

It's relative to the hardware they're on. Activate brain.

I think he was saying that good games on the Wii get such high reviews because there are so many bad games to compare to and, like some people said, the hardware of the Wii, which I sort of agree with. But SMG1 definitely deserved the score it got (haven't played SMG2 yet).

EDIT: Wait a second, they brought back the islanders from Sunshine?! And that planet looks pretty open. This game is quickly climbing up my list of games to get.

That's basically what I'm talking about. Plus the endless amount of shovelware always gets rated 6-9 regardless. That wouldn't fly on any other platform. There are countless examples of this. Those games just don't justify a 7-8 review. I'm sure you've all seen this picture. If you want to go the hardware route, I guess you could say the wii hardware is so terrible these games are good.

Well in that case it's probably rated for the target audience. A 5-star review of high-heel shoes wouldn't mean much to me, but for a woman they may be perfect.

You have to come to terms that the definition of "game" is expanding into territories you have absolutely no interest in.

Oh no, your position is that less powerful hardware means worse games :(

I want to destroy the individual that added a ****ing z to the end, and made it babyz instead of babies.

I rented the 1st game, didn't really like it, but this game sounds like they streamlined everything. still i'll probably rent this

Then IGN shouldn't be reviewing the game, because they are not the target audience. Better to give it to a children's gaming editor- oh wait.

A conspiracy to rate Wii games higher? Sounds like crazy talk to me.

Everyone knows IGN is silly, but that doesn't mean getting a good review from them means the game is bad. Generally, any game that gets a 9 to 10 from IGN (or any game reviewer, really) has atleast some aspect that makes it quite exceptional, even if the game isn't. Generally I just note HL2.net's opinions, my friends' opinions, my experience, and my taste. AND OH GOD, I NEED MORE THROWBACK GALAXY.

I've gotten around 10 stars so far, and just got the first Grand star. Loving it.

I find it funny that you found the linear levels poor in SMG1 when the nonlinear levels were boring and repetitive as crap. But then, you also liked Sunshine, so you're obviously a terrible person.

Lots of things. It didn't feel cohesive. It had tons of great ideas marred by meh execution.

Sunshine didn't feel like a Mario game. You could have swapped Mario for anything else and it would have worked - it probably would have fared better as disgruntled fans and reviewers wouldn't have moaned so much. Let's face it, the jet pack sucked, the new island had none of the abstract attraction and little of the inventiveness that Mario games are famouse for, and the gameplay didn't touch Mario 64 (other than the void levels, which were great and the only true 'Mario' thing in the game). Sunshine wasn't a bad game, just a sub par Mario game. It's the SMB2 of the 3D Marios.
