I just completed Mass Effect on Saturday and I loved it. Definitely one of the best games I can remember playing in ages. Luckily I'd played a fair bit of the game already, so when I started my own game I made sure that my inventory always had plenty of room. What I don't get is why the hell they couldn't just put like Shield Battery (4), telling you you've got 4 of that item, rather than it taking up four slots. It's also a little weird how the game changes from giving you little scraps of money here and there, until suddenly money is literally pouring into your inventory from everywhere.

I only used Ashley and Garrus through the whole game as a soldier, and made mince meat of almost everything. :D I'm starting a new game as a female Infiltrator, with an added shotgun bonus skill. I'm probably going to use Wrex a lot too, seeing as I never really played around with Biotics the first time round. I would use Liara, but I just can't stand the silly woman. :p
 
I just finished it, loved it the whole way through, really want more of the story.

But now that EA own both BioWare aswell as the Mass Effect IP, I doubt we will be seeing anything great coming out of it.:(
 
I need to get back to playing it. I haven't touched it since I beat the first 'tutorial' like mission. I sort of put it off and it's in the danger zone of me never touching it again.

You should keep playing. Once you get out of the Citadel it becomes so fun.
 
I finished ME just before Xmas. All in all a pretty great game. I'd even go so far as to say it's as good as a game with such serious flaws could possibly be. I absolutely loved the amount of detail they lavished on the game world (alien races, character back-stories, equipment specs, etc.), but like a lot of folks I found the side missions boring and repetetive. In the end, though, I was so bent on scavenging new gear that I did a bunch of pointless side-quests anyway.

Man, I'd really like to play this game on a decent TV, though...
 
Loses points for the slowest elevators in the freaking world. :p

I have to concur - it's amazing, but also seriously flawed.
To be honest, I think most of the awesomeness comes from the brilliant setting which is one of the best sci-fi universes I've come across, the major revelations and plot points.
The actual execution of the game leaves much to be desired - in many ways, it's a step backwards from KoToR. Then again, Jade Empire was several steps back from KoToR so maybe they're just regaining lost ground.

Basically, the "big picture" of the game is beyond amazing, but the core details are pretty hollow. Crap and unengaging side quests, storyline feels rushed, too combat focused, not enough exploration beyond boring uncharted worlds, interface problems...
In most RPGs, you complete smaller quests that lead into creating a bigger picture and typically are based out of several main areas - Mass Effect, on the other hand, is composed of a few main missions that revolve around combat and those planets don't really have any side quests to offer...in this way, it doesn't feel like an RPG. More like an action adventure game.

In The Witcher, everything just ties together so well - even the side quests are generally relevant to the main plot, as the cast of characters remains relatively consistent throughout the game and they often relate to these characters. You can usually learn something interesting and relevant by completing side quests, whereas they're just entirely irrelevant modules in Mass Effect.
Most of the people you meet in Mass Effect are relevant only for a short period of time, and then are never seen again. It's a very disjointed experience.

I love it, I just wish it lived up to its potential. I think it would make a brilliant film.
 
Just finished the game, starting a new game as renegade. To me the whole game felt like it was somewhat rushed. The combat feels like it wasn't really fully made. Then there are these mako driving sequenzes. The planets are basicly the same, they have different textures and the same shaped rooms have objects in different places.

This game has the same thing with the difficuilty as almost every game. Towards the end you become a friggin god. When you get the specter weapons on normal you don't need anything else. I mean even the shotgun is a one shot one kill weapon even if the distance is huge. Hardcore feels pretty same :/

But still after all these problems GOTY for me.
 
Did everyone here see the Zero Punctuation review of the game? I can't help but think that he would've given it a REAL bollocking if he'd actually done the side quests. I mean fighting through the same space bunker dozens of times...bloody hell.

I loved the main missions, though--particularly Feros and the two levels that concluded the game.
 
The side missions really are repetitive, none so far have been really interesting. I'm trying to do a few more before i go to Ilos. Don't want to rush the ending. While playing them i started thinking about Oblivion and how that game had some interesting side-quests(albeit it had its fair share of dungeon crawls).

End of Virmire spoilers btw:
when i got to the end Alenko was with the Salarians at the Comm tower as i sent him with them at the start of the mission(mistakeningly btw as i always take him on my missions, i was just pressing X to skip the chat and accidently hit the option to send him with the Salarians) and Ashley was to guard the nuke.

I made the decision to get Alenko, i really believed i would have time to get both but Ashley said sumit like ''you know you wont have time to get to us both'', despite this i went to get Alenko still thinking i would get back to the nuke :( In the end there was the mini-battle with Saren. I actually felt crap when the Normandy was pulling away and Ashley was wounded beside the nuke :(
 
A couple of questions if you folks don't mind me hijacking this this thread for 2 secs.

Downloadable content, are there any plans for it?

Depending on your ruthlessness or kindness, do you get different endings or do get one ending?

No DLC as of yet.

Overall niceness/ruthlessness during the game has bearing on two possible endings. Although the ending is dialogue sensitive. ;)

The inventory is such a bitch to manage. Most of the weapon addons and ammo upgrades are useless anyway. The only things worth keeping are Shredder and Tungsten rounds, plus new weapons. What really doesn't makes sense is one enemy ends up dropping not just one or two little items, but a whole armory full of crap.

Everything else is medigel'd or equipped with Tali and Wrex. Speaking of, Tali and Wrex MUST be in ME2.

Yeah, Wrex is quality. But his presence in ME2 could be a continuity problem depending on how you played the game. As for Liara, well, I hope she's in the sequel. She's having my baby. Poor Ash is deader than Princess Grace.
 
They could always use a system that reads ME ending saves. And come one, who DIDN'T max out their charm/intimidation to save keep him? Also yus, sexable Tali.

They already have. We know that the decisions you make in this game will affect things in the next. You don't think that side-missions like The Fan are there just as creepy and totally ominous one-offs do you? ;)

But, don't we learn of Conrad's death in a news broadcast? I don't think he'll be coming back.

And a sexable Tali? I don't know... Cute accent, but I'd be a little creeped out if she left her respirator on during a boody call.

Depends on what course you have taken. :E

From a post on the Mass Effect boards:

"If you give Conrad your autograph and then allow him to take a picture with you, you get to have a third exchange with him. In this exchange he asks you to make him a Spectre. You have three options:

1)If you follow the Paragon path, you can tell him that he should go home to his wife and children and that people like Conrad remind Shepard what he is fighting for
2)If you choose the neutral option, you tell Conrad that he isn't ready. Ofcourse being a thickheaded moron, he doesn't listen and storms off attempting to show you he is "Spectre stuff". Later in one of the elevator scenes, the news reports talk about a man who walked into a bar and tried to pick a fight with some Turians and died in the ensuing battle.
3)If you are renegade or just looking for some good fun, you can choose to intimidate Conrad and you get to stick a gun in his face. He then cries and tells you how he wishes he never met you and decides to run back home."

I just can't imagine the devs would go to the trouble of giving the impression that your choices affect the galaxy and then not take advantage of the save data in such a way that demonstrates this fully in the next game(s). Some of the really big decisions will be extremely difficult for them though I imagine, like deaths of squadmates, Racchni Queen, Council living or dying, ambassador choice, etc. Should be extremely interesting to see how they do it.
 
I just finished it, it was great. I have too say, I was worried it would get worse as time goes on, as so many RPG's do. But I was hooked all the way through. And after Vimire (and having too sacrfice on of your guys D: )I was so into it I played it to the end just now. The credits music was great. Looking forward to the sequel (its a planned trilogy). The choices were epic. The whole wrex thing, killing one of your teamates, etc. I did kind of think the last battle was too easy (I had avoided the first thanks to charm).

One thing, if you choose not to save the council, do they die?

Finally forced myself to sit down and understand its combat system and equipment, and now that i understand it i keep thinking 'why didnt i realise that before?'

And now, i cant stop playing it. My eyes hurt. My thumb is swore. But it keeps pulling me forward with its story and control of talking and decision making.

FINALLY rented this game on the weekend and i must say that it's quite alot of fun
ive only really been playing through the primary missions because i hope to complete it before i must return it to the store
but i'm seriously considering buying it

my only complaint is that the combat and cover system could have used a bit more polishing
 
I finished the game about a week ago and I feel let down. I feel like I've only played half the game. After beating Saren I thought right! I'm halfway through the game.....

yeah you can rip through the main story missions rather quickly, after Artemis Tau, Feros and Noveria i did alot more side missions as there was only 3 chapters left of the story. Shame, the side missions were pretty bland.
 
Just beat this tonight...Probably the best game I've played in a while, although I do wish the main mission was a little bit longer.

I played as a Vanguard (and eventually Nemesis) and I liked using biotics so much that I started a new file as a female Adept....Singularity, here I come. :cheese:

I really like how you can continue playing as the character you already beat the game with, as when I finished I was only a Level 39 or something, and I want to get the highest I can get. I did a fair bit of side missions but I plan to do all of them this time around.

What was everyone's favorite main mission? I think mine might have been Virmire....so fun. Noveria was awesome too, except Benezia was a royal pain. IMO she was the hardest boss in the game. Her and those Asari Commandos...
