Massive CD-Key confusion, NEED HELP!

Ok, so I went out and bought a regular non collectors edition of halflife 2. it does not come with a manual, instead it comes with 5 installs cd’s and reference guide and ATI promo.

Is the CD key the long number printed on the back of the paper case of the first install disk??? This number does not seem to work for me. Do I simply type it into steam without and dashes? Or do I have to type it the way steam specifies me too “1111-22222-3333-AAAAA-BBBBB-CCCCC-DDDDD-EEEEE” ?

I tried it both ways and its still says that the cd key is not valid WTF?!?!?! I wana play this game so bad right now and this stupid cd key BS is holding me back.

yeah dont type in the last stream of digits... like SXXXXXXX its longer than the previous sets.... dont type in the last string, its just the cd set number

Man I'm retarded, was under the dvd. Haven't been able to install half life yet as I need a dvd rom drive :/ I can use one over my network but I'm buggered because of the damn cd check!

you can preload half life 2 trough steam, then activate it with the serial from your dvd.
