Ah the uninformed innocence of youth. DOOM was released before they even started programming Halflife. Halflife is the rip-off.

Yeah! id. traveled 5 years into the future, then went back and created the original DooM. What a total rip-off! :dozey:

Oh, please. DooM III is simply a re-hash of the original...and even at that, the "Secret Facility And Things Going Completely Wrong," has been done many times before.
HL was the best, but not the first.

If anything, HL is the rip-off.

i played doom1 about 4 times....... "when it came out".
i was 10 years old.

i also played wolfenstein 3d(1992 i think) and quake1(whenever that was, 96 i think) when they came out.

i have no idea what the story was.... i didnt start getting into PC games really heavy untill i was around 15 or 16 .....when i started to play HL/TFC.

i guess i am a kiddie when it comes to the doom generation :p
 
i thought the "story" of d00m was hell invaded the mars space colony... not that it was an experiment gone awry.... lemme check the manual...
 
Heh, isnt is enough with one person bashing the other one off saying that doom is a rip-off? Do we need ... like 5 of them? :D

i was basing that off the trailer though......it just looked to much like HL

.....but as GV said...

here is the entire story from the doom 1 manual... i'm gonna go find my doom 2 manual and type that up... and i know it's long... but please read it... it took me so long to type...

the story from the manual:

The Story So Far...
You are a marine, one of Earth's Toughest, hardened in combat and trained for acrtion. Three years ago you assaulted a superior officer for ordering his soldiers to fire upon civilians, He and his body cast were shipped to Pearl Harbor, while you were transfered to Mars, home of the Union Aerospace Corporation.

The UAC is a Multi-planetary congolmerate with radioactive waste facilities on Mars and it's two moons, Phobos and Deimos. With no action for 50 million miles, your day consisted of suckin; dust and watchin' resticted flicks in the rec room.

For the last four years the military, UAC's biggest supplier, has used remote facilities on Phobos and Deimos to conduct various secret projects, including research om inter-dimensional space travel. So far, they have been able toopen gateways between Phobos and Deimos, throwing a few gadgets into one and watching them come out the other. Recently however, the Gateways have grown dangerously unstable. Military 'volunteers' entering them have either disappeared or have been stricken with a strange form of insanity-babbling vulgarities, bludgeongoing anything that breathes, and finally suffering an untimely death of a full-body explosion. Matching heads with torsos to send home to the folks became a full-time job. Latest military reports state that the research is suffering a small set back, but everything is under control.

A few hours ago, Mars recieved a garbled message from Phobos. 'We require immediate military support. Something fraggin' evil is coming out of the Gateways! Computer systems have gone beserk1' The rest was incoherent. Soon afterwards, Deimos simply vanished from the sky. Since then, attempts to establish contact with either moon have been unsucessful.

You and your buddies, the only combat troop for 50 million miles were sent up to Phobos pronto. You were ordered to secure the perimeter of the base while the rest of the team were inside. For several hours, your radio picked up sounds of combat: guns firing, men yelling orders, screams, bones cracking, then finally, silence. Seems your buddies are dead.

It's Up To You

Things aren't looking to good. You'll never navigate off the planet on your own. Plus, all the heavy weapons have been taken by the assault team leaving you only with a pistol. If only you could get your hands on a plasma rifle, or even a shotgun you could take a few downon your way out. Whatever killed your buddies deserves a couple of pellets in the forehead. Securing your helmet, you exit the landing pod. Hopefully you can find more substantial firepower some where in the station.

As you walk through the main entrance of the base, you hear animal-like growls echoing throughout the distant corridors. They know you are here... There is no turning back.

The Story Continues...

Back at last. After days of hard fighting in space, you've returned home on well-earned leave. You're one of Earth's crack soldiers, hard-bitten, tough, and heavily-armed. When the alien invasion struck Mars, you were the first on the scene. By killing, killing, and killing, you won. You stopped the invasion, saved Mars' base, and became a war hero. What they don't talk so much about is that you were the only survivor.

But that's all behind you now. You've quit the military, and are heading home. Your drop od lands with a crunch. You open 'er up, and look out. Damn! The city ahead is on fire. What the devil is going on? You stagger forward, clutching your sidearm. Packs of refugees are fleeing the flaming metropolis. A band of them shriek in terror. You squint. What's that? Someone is attacking the refugees. You rush up and blast away, killing the troublemaker. It looks like a human, but something is not right. His mouth is filled with half-chewed flesh, and he's all messed up like a zombie from a bad horror mov... Hell, not again!

You can feel it. It's starting all over agian, just like on Mars. First, the people are taken over, turned into cannibal Things. Then the real horror starts, the deformed monstrosities from... "Outside". But now it's on Earth!

It turns out that the invaders are all over. Monsters range from Tokyo to Timbuktu, from Stockhokm to Scranton. Billions are dead. Some people have been transformed into flesh eating mutants, but a few, a very few, are still alive and still fully human. The wise men of humanity have evolved a plan to save what's left to save of the human race. They have built enormous ships to carry the remaing people into space, safely away from the ruined world.

But...

Unfortunately, Earth;s only remaining ground spaceport has just been taken over by the demons. They've instituated a sort of force field - a flame barrier - over the port; no ships can take off or land. You gotta go back in action. The pathetic remnants of Earth's soldiers are making an assaulton the invaders at the spaceport. If you win, you might be able to turn off the barrier, so the ships can leave, and Homo sapiens may not go extinct just yet. If you lose, that's it. Humanity is history.

You and your comrades make their attack. Soon, brave men drop like flies. You lose track of your friends, though sometimes you can hear them scream when they die, and the sounds of combat echo deep within the starbase.

Something hisses with a range from thr steel tunnels ahead. They know you're back. They have no pity, mercy, take no quarter, a crave none. They're the perfect enemy, in a way. No one's left but you. You... and them....

um, if I'm not mistaken, thats the story from the manuals. At last for doom 1, I know I recognize that.

Well the image quality is better, but I still think that I'd prefer to see the work of the licencees of the Doom 3 engine than the licenser. Doom 3 just leaves me cold game wise.

hehe, well you had em going. This is what happens when people skim. I just got confused because people said you should be winning the nobel prize o_O i was like wtf. then you were like lols teh newbs and then I was like wait a second, yuo aer teh fruad! and then you were like oh noes teh found out and then I was like rofl newb and then its now.
