So, who wants to do math? :)

Someone asks a math problem, then the person who answers it asks a new one.
You can keep score if you really care :)

I'll start out with an easy logic problem anyone can figure out

Add, subtract, multiply, and divide the numbers 3,3,5,7 (use each once) in any way to get 24.

You know, I'm really not surprised about a thread like this from you. No good at maths, I am. I'm an english major.

But hey, best of luck.

3+3=26+5 -7

Done
Ill let the next person to post ask teh question

This was on my last Calc 3 exam:

The volume of a cone of radius r and height h is (pi*r^2*h/3). The radius is increasing at a rate of 2 in./s while its height is decreasing at a rate of 3 in./s. At what rate is the volume of the cone changing when r=120 in. and h=140 in. ?

7^2 means seven squared.
Code:
    [U]-x+4[/U]
2x=x^2-4

probably easy for you.

its the british math...it is all screwed up... :E

j/k guys, love you bunchs <3

2,110,080 inches?

7*3=21
21+3=24
24+5*0=24

I don't you're allowed to use the 0, Riom.

No, 0 is adding an extra random number :p

@ Nat: Bastard! I take calc3 next semester. Too many variables :p I'm still trying to figure out a way though ><

::starts trying rio's problem cuz it looks more doable::

Gaa, you smart peoples and your maths... I wish I could get math.

A boat takes 3.00 hours to travel 25.0 km down a river, then 5.50 hours to return. How fast is the river flowing?

@ rio, does that function have any rational values of x?
I tried the rational root theorm thing so i assume they're irrational
in which case x is close to -1.459 or 2.109

::tries nat's::
Can this be done with calc1 or 2?

Yeah, it can be done easily. Doesn't even take calc, just algebra. It's simple physics.

Im only in year 9, havent done that yet :(

An easy one:

What does 2a(squared)b X 5a(squared) b(the power of -5) equal?

Yea i noticed that after i started it :)
I got 2.5 km/h, but i havent checked it yet

3.787878787...km/h?

@Ikerous's, I have no idea what you just said. x has 3 values.

Ikerous said:
Oh, haha, -.649 too
Unless I made a bad mistake making the damn question the answers should be
-2, -0.5 and 2
:S

......-x+4
2x=x^2-4

if x = 2, then 4 = 2 / 0...

And if anyone was curious about the first problem
3*(3*5-7)=24

I think you may have misinterpreted it. It is supposed to mean:
two x is equal to minus x plus 4 all over x squared minus four

And if x is 2, then...
two times two is equal to negative 2 plus 4 all over 2 squared minus four
so 4 = 2 / 0...

Anyone know ∫sqrt(9 - x^2) dx from 0 to 3?

Ooh, or more 24 questions!
make 24 with 1,3,4,6

IDIOT! */me realises mistake*
Should be:
Code:
   [U]-x^2+4[/U]
2x=x^2-4

A boat takes 3.00 hours to travel 25.0 km down a river, then 5.50 hours to return. How fast is the river flowing?
1 and 59 over sixty six?

In that case i get x = -1/2 :p

2 still doesnt work, cuz then 4 = 0/0

OMG!! 3 really doesn't = white shoes :O

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Proof_that_0.999..._equals_1

There is no proof that demonstrates 0.999... = 1 but there is solid proof that demonstrates 0.999... < 1. See the proof by induction if the sysops have not censored it yet. The number 0.999... is not a limit, it is an infinite sum. Even if you were to treat it as a limit, the limit is not equal to the infinite sum. Just try adding the following: 9/10 + 9/100 + 9/1000 + .... add as many terms as you like. You will notice that the terms keep getting closer to zero and the sum keeps getting closer to 1. However, no term ever becomes zero and no sum ever becomes 1.

what is the solution to 2x'' +8x' +80x = sin(t) where x(0) = 0 and x'(0) = 0 and how does it behave as t nears infinity

I'm really not sure, but I've calculated 1.88 Km/h for the river. And 6.42 Km/ for the boat.

Edit : Oh Noes!11 Idiocy!

make 24 with 1,3,4,6:

(6-1)^2 -4 +3=24

Am I allowed to square?

2 still doesnt work, cuz then 4 = 0/0
I just realised that the numbers above and below are equal but opposite, man I suck.

What I did to make sum:
got 2x^3+x^2-8x-4=0 from a book (answers 2, -2, -0.5)
factorised the 2x^3 and the -8x to ger 2x(x^2-4)=-x+4
divided both sides by x^2-4 to get the sum.

What's the answer to /+*+*/+/+**+*/5624756+*/1-*/717179+1707+01+?
