Max Payne 3

Old and largely irrelevant since noone here seems interested in the multi, but I thought this was kind of neat anyway.

http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/06/13/oho-max-payne-3-cheaters-forced-to-play-against-other/

“Anyone found to have used hacked saves, modded games, or other exploits to gain an unfair advantage in Max Payne 3 Multiplayer, or to circumvent the leaderboards will be quarantined from all other players into a “Cheaters Pool”, where they’ll only be able to compete in multiplayer matches with other confirmed miscreants.”
“In the event we decide to absolve any of these cheaters for their past transgressions they may re-enter play with the general public, however a second offense will result in their indefinite banishment. In either case, we will be removing invalid leaderboard entries to ensure that the players at the top of the charts have earned their spots fairly.”

Edit: Unintentional triple post. What did I ever do to these forums to make them hate me so much.

... Oh yeah.

This actually makes me want to not buy the game.

I don't really get all the butthurt about it "Not being a Max Payne game" or "It isn't Max Payne because it doesn't have these things." Surely its in the best interest for both the developer and the player for a game series to progress - advancing gameplay/mechanics from previous games while working off a new original story which references previous games while not isolating players who haven't player prior games. Seems like a lot of people just wanted Max Payne 3 to be 'going through the Max Payne motions' again.

I finished MP3 the other day and it is a really solid game. 9/10.

Think of it like this: Would you have a problem with the G-Man and Vortigaunts never showing up in Half-Life 3? Max Payne has always been about two things: Awesome gunplay, and semi-psychedelic story of conspiracy. I'm probably still going to get it but I outright expect to be disappointed by the change in narrative.

I've not tried any of MP3, only watched my roommates play it ("Watched" being a ridiculously appropriate word here). The core gunplay still seems fun and true to the first two games, but I do miss the graphic novel-styled cutscenes and exaggerated noir schtick. The guy who voices Max gives his best performance in the series yet, but the dialogue's definitely missing the hyperbolic charm it used to have.

YMMV and all that, just go into it with appropriate expectations. It's not a bad change, but it is different.

I wouldn't have a 'problem' with that, it would seem out of place and weird - but thats because Gman has a reason to stay with the franchise as we don't know who he is, or what his agenda is. In the case of Max Payne 2, it seems right to move away from the whole 'going crazy' nightmare thing since Max has had a pretty long time to 'come back to reality'. As for characters/factions from previous games, it doesn't really matter that they don't make an appearance - since by the end we knew their motivations, desires and ultimate goals. Not to mention how they were almost all dead.

Not really too easy to compare it to Half-Life since the themes you brought up are still on going, shrouded with questions.

If you wouldn't have a problem with it, how could you find it weird and out of place? It's weird and out of place for Max Payne to not involve crazy shit.

Same goes for the Inner Circle.

Seems to me like that's a perfect reason to bring it all back into his life. His "time away" should be backstory. It doesn't really matter that the old characters were explained away by the end, because they shouldn't have been in the first place.

Surely that comes into the part about advancing both the character and the series? And I wouldn't have a problem, because there would obviously be a good reason for it, but it would seem a little out of place. I just wouldn't complain to the level people have been complaining.

Eeeesh, reasonable opinions about Hollywood presentation aside, TB is full of misinfo here. He's not getting 240fps (there are some bugs with MP3 vs benching software), MSAA doesn't work properly yet and the cutscenes have nothing to do with loading times.

Overall really enjoyed it!

That last mission was frigging shit tho, it really killed the ending to be fair. It was building up to something really cool then.. meh

Just finished this last night.

I really enjoyed it, a lot... BUT, throughout the entire game, I couldn't help but get the feeling that I was just playing AAA blockbuster shooter #1,000,002 (IE generic popamole crap).

I mean, don't get me wrong, the story works well enough, the engine feels great, and the shooting is incredibly satisfying, but the whole coverfire mechanic felt overdone here. Maybe that's just cause my first playthrough was on hard mode, but I still feel like there were way too many levels that totally abused coverfire (the scene in the bombed out bus came to mind). Levels like that just made me feel like I was playing a Time Crisis game with stages where you can run around, and it really felt like there were a lot of them too.

I suppose then that my primary complaint is that there way too many coverfire scenes, and not enough run and gun. Like I said though, perhaps playing through on medium or normal will be more enjoyable.

Lost of other things which bugged me too, like the pier level where falling in the water immediately triggers an instadeath custscene. WTF? Rockstar just too lazy to implement swimming? I absolutely couldn't stand the kill-cam effect every time you kill the last enemy in the stage too, although kill-cams in general are something I constantly find myself whining about in new games. Am I the only one who thinks it feels cheap and childish, as opposed to cinematic?

One incredibly minor gripe I have, is with how in the sniping scenes, you actually had to lead your targets, but in every other portion of the game this was totally absent. Would have been cool if bullet travel time was implemented all around, but oh well.

EDIT: Oh and **** any weapon with laser sights.

Lost of fun, but i'm disappointed that I spent 60 bucks on it.

I'm glad I asked for it for a gift. I'm in the favelas level now and I've been enjoying pretty much all of it so far. I had some real problems on the docks level due to weird obstacle hitboxes. Great action and yeah, a little different from the old ones, but overall my senses are still telling me this is a Max Payne game. And a good one.

Oh yeah I forgot I was playing this. Genuinely fun gunplay but man the dialog tries so hard to convince you you're not having a good time that you start to believe it after a while. Just uggghhhh it's so grating, Rockstar don't know how to handle the gritty noir thing with even a modicum of subtlety or irony or wit it's just HELLO I AM REGRETMAN LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT MY REGRETS. Also drinking and chugging pills haha emulate this kiddies.
