there has prolly been some post like this before but who uses maya here? 3dsmax is nasty, nasty nasty nasty! (i use maya) and does anyone here do cg animations (i do).

I use Maya for character animation mostly, and some other effects. I prefer to model in XSI or Lightwave and particles in Houdini, with surfacing in Lightwave and setting scenes up in either XSI or Lightwave

I have tried both Maya and 3dsmax and i prefer 3dsmax a lot more. The reason being is that i could never get past the User interface of Maya and it was just so frustrating to do even the simple things for me, 3dsmax i could get straight into with ease.

hehe, yeah people say Max is noob friendly. i wouldnt know compared to other products, but i found Max very easy to get to grips with, if something could make my life easier than it already is, id be relatively interested :p

i tried 3dsmax and maya was easier in my opinion.

Same with me, I made a really kewl alien and animated it...I couldnt in max due to it being really hard ;(

maya is nice, but once u get to grips with max, its way easier to co-ordinated around the viewports and edit an object. maya is a little too fiddly sometimes, depends how long youve been using it though

everything seems so logical in maya, for dynamics and particles at least, i managed to create loads physical crap amazingly quickly and all i have to say is final fantasy the spirits within :) all maya till render stage. (think they used renderman or whatever that pixar tool is called)

True - Gollum looks cool and is some of the best CG out there - but lets not forget that they started work at a time when XSI wasn't around and they had to use Maya. The pipeline is a few years old now.

The interesting thing when comparing packages is who is using what now and what are they producing?

Hence - ILM (V-H), Animal Logic (Happy Feet), Valve (HL2), EA(Fifa +), Pandemic Studios (Full Spectrum Warrior), Capcom (Onimusha 3), Konami (MGS3), The Mill, La Maison, Glassworks, Quiteman ... and many more

(though the same could be said for Maya I'm sure)

The main point I was trying to make - is there is a lot of good CG out there done with a lot of different packages. ( I'll just be more careful with my selection of words  )

simple fact is maya is better for cg than xsi, xsi probaly was around at the time of lord of the rings. the matrix was done in maya even though there arent that many special effects in it, i cant say what the 2nd and 3rd films used as i dont know, i know what you mean though and its all about the user! :)

"the matrix was done in maya even though there arent that many special effects in it" wow thats an understatement! lol

its not really at all, the original matrix used little special effects, those 360 cameras are real camera work buildings were sometimes greenscreened in, the bullets were some of the most advanced bits which can be done fairly easily.

3D Studio Max was the first i got in tutch with but relly never got a grip of it even tough i bought a book for it. Started working with maya instead and could almost instantly make good models. Imo the controlls in maya are way better from the ones in max. I see it more like a taste thing, some like one and some like the other software.

ukfilmer, I use Maya, although i've had it for only 2days and i'm REALLY confused.
:¬ /
How long you been using it?

Neo was filmed with tons of cameras shooting at him really fast, but, the background was done with maya. The scenes were they filmed in 'the real' world was cg with maya. That long jump again was filmed on green screen then replaced with 3d backgrounds in maya. The robotic things were done in maya, should i go on.

i know how it was made dude, it still isnt that amazing. its great yeah but it aint amazing.

Thats because the effects were so overused afterwards. Like lens flares after B5 used them, looked great at first but now everyone and their Uncle does it. So it looks crap.

whats b5? i dont think lens flares are really overused.
b5 - Babylon 5. And Lens Flares are overdone, ask anyone in the business, any use of them now must be limited and very very careful, otherwise it ends up looking lame. B5 used them a lot, and they looked good.. then. But now people stick them on everything just for the fun of it, with no care or thought and well yeah overused. Like Arnold style renders and poser figures. Saturated the market with everyone using them.

bah! babylon 5 is a poor mans star trek :)
call it what you want, if it wasn't for Babylon 5, most people would never have got jobs in the industry. Before Foundation Imaging came along it was a LOT LOT harder to get into the movies. CG effects was in its infancy and produced on SG machines with software costing hundreds of thousands, hardware costing even more. Foundation Imaging, Babylon 5 and Newtek's Video Toaster and Lightwave 3D made it all possible... You'd not be doing any 3D with the pro apps if it wasn't for them changing how CG was looked upon.

Besides, the same guys who did Babylon 5 worked on the more recent episodes and spin-offs of Star Trek using much the same gear so :p

yeah im just saying babylon 5 is crappy, even crappier than star trek :) i appreciate what its done for the industry as i hope to be in this industry one day :D i just dont like sci-fi tv shows

Heh a lot of sci-fi shows are crap, I agree.. and I considered B5 in the same light. But its one of those shows you had to watch in full to really grasp the little nuggets of gold. Then of course the well known problems toward the end, all the iffs and buts and maybe's. Netter Digital making a pigs ear of a lot of effects. All kinds of problems screwed up the show toward the end.

Firefly and Tremors the series. Those were great though and a shame they both got cancelled after the first series :(
